Volvo's new ES90 saloon promises 435-mile battery range

Written By Phill Tromans

This is Volvo's new electric saloon, the ES90, which promises a battery range of up to 435 miles.

Fresh from the news that the V60 and V90 estates were going back on sale, Volvo confirmed last year that it was working on the ES90. It's now been revealed, with a massive range courtesy of a 106kWh battery. A smaller 92kWh battery is also available for a range of up to 404 miles.

Volvo says the new car is packed with its latest computer hardware, making the ES90 the most powerful car ever made by the Swedish company in terms of computing capacity. The tech inside can be continuously updated to improve safety, connectivity and even the driving experience, Volvo says.

The Volvo ES90 is a large, luxurious car in the style of the S90, and a rival for cars like the BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz EQE.

New 2025 Volvo ES90: price and release date

Pricing information has yet to be announced, but keeping in mind the competition, a starting figure of around £65,000 to £70,000 seems likely.

The Volvo ES90 will be a large, premium electric car with a saloon-like profile but a hatchback boot.

New 2025 Volvo ES90: exterior and interior

Volvo says the ES90 is designed to blend saloon looks with fastback practicality and the spaciousness of an SUV, thanks to a long 3.1-metre wheelbase. It has a sloping roof that, as well as giving the ES90 a sleek sillhouette, helps produce a drag coefficient of just 0.25, making it the slipperiest saloon that Volvo has ever made. The rear hatch opening should dramatically improve practicality over a standard saloon boot.

Inside, the ES90 is designed to be limousine-like to serve both family and business customers, with lots of legroom in the back, lounge armrests and ventilation on teh rear seats and individiaul reclining capability. An electrochromic panoramic roof should keep the cabin light and airy, but can be darkened at the touch of a button.

Infotainment duties are provided by a 14.5-inch central touchscreen, a 9-inch driver display and a head-up display projecting driving information onto the windscreen. The infotainment system has built-in Google Services, including Google Assistant, Google Maps, Waze and the Google Play Store if you want to download additional apps. Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are standard.

Other features include a 25-speaker, 1610W Bowers & Wilkins sound system with Dolby Atmos and a special Abbey Road Studios mode. The ES90 includes Volvo's Digital Key Plus system, which lets you access the car using an Android phone, an iPhone or an Apple Watch.

Safety features are always a key selling point of Volvos, and the ES90 is crammed with the latest technology, including an array of sensors inside out, from cameras and radar to ultrasonic sesnors and a lidar system to help prevent collisions.

Volvo says the ES90 is made from 29% recycled aluminium and 18% recycled steel in an effort to be as sustainable as possible. The interior features a recycled material called Nordico, and the wood used is certied by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The ES90 is also bulit in what Volvo says is a climate-neutral manufacturing plant that uses 100% renewable energy.

The interior features a large infotainment screen and recycled materials.

New 2025 Volvo ES90: range, motors and batteries

The Volvo ES90 will be available in both single-motor models with rear-wheel drive, as well as more powerful dual-motor versions with all-wheel drive.

The entry-level model has a single electric motor at the back with 333PS and 480Nm of torque, which translates to a 0-62mph acceleration time of 6.9 seconds, with a 404-mile battery range.

The all-wheel-drive (AWD) versions will use a 106kWh battery and 800-volt tech to allow a range of up to 435 miles.

Two AWD models will be sold. The standard AWD car has 449PS and 670Nm of torque for a sprightly 0-62mph time of 5.6 seconds, while the Performance version has a whopping 680PS and 870Nm for a very quick 4.0-second 0-62mph time.

Fast-charging capability of up to 350kW on both batteries will allow customers to add 186 miles of range in 10 minutes on the 106kWh battery, if they can find a suitable charger. On the 92kWh battery, the same charging time will give up to 171 miles. Both take around 20 minutes to charge from 10% to 80% capacity.
