Petrol vans weren’t especially common until the last few years, when cities around Europe began to ban or charge older diesel vans when they drive into the centre. Van makers quickly moved to introduce petrol equivalents for those who didn’t want to deal with potentially stricter diesel van bans coming into force in future. Buying a used petrol van can make a lot of sense, particularly for town dwellers. With approved used, low mileage examples starting from just over £10,000, why not check out heycar's range used petrol vans for sale?
Used petrol vans help both business or private users avoid expensive city charges such as London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone, which penalises many diesel vans. They also benefit the local environment compared to an old diesel van thanks to reduced pollutants such as NOx (nitrous oxide). Many of the latest petrol vans are almost as efficient as their diesel equivalents, while petrol is noticeably cheaper at the pumps than diesel these days. Significantly cheaper than a used hybrid or used electric van, petrol vans offer a smoother and quieter driving experience than diesels, too.
You wouldn’t ordinarily think a van could be fun to drive, but the Ford Transit Courier and Ford Transit Connect small vans are both available with a punchy yet efficient 1.0-litre Ecoboost turbo petrol engine. We also rate the affordable Volkswagen Caddy 1.2 TSI and powerful Volkswagen Transporter 2.0 TSI. Other great choices include the Citroen Berlingo and Peugeot Partner, which are both available with an excellent 1.2-litre turbocharged Puretech petrol engine.
The biggest barrier to buying a used petrol van is simply the lack of petrol vans available for sale. The overwhelming majority of vans were sold with diesel engines when new, so your choice of used petrol vans isn’t extensive. You’ll also need to consider if a petrol van being less efficient than a diesel van makes sense for your business or other use. If you plan on doing very high mileages you may well still find that a diesel van makes more financial sense. Although modern petrol engines are very durable, for intensive use cases a diesel van might better stand up to abuse.
If you feel a petrol van isn't quite right for you, we've also got 1000s of used vans for sale to suit all budgets.
