Used Pickup Trucks For Sale

Pickup trucks for sale with heycar

Pickup trucks have evolved far beyond their workhorse roots. Once reserved for tradespeople and farmers, they’re now popular for both personal and professional purposes, combining rugged capability with the comfort, technology and convenience of a modern SUV. Whether you’re after a dependable work vehicle or a stylish all-rounder with adventurous overtones, today’s pickups can do it all.

There’s a wide variety of pickup trucks for sale in the UK, from smaller models that suit life around town to heavy-duty 4x4s built for towing and off-roading. While most pickups are still diesel-powered, electric pickups are slowly entering the market, offering greener alternatives without sacrificing load-lugging ability. Want to explore your options? Take a look at our guide to the best pickup trucks in the UK.

Why buy a used pickup truck?

People buy pickup trucks for all sorts of reasons. Some love the rugged styling and commanding driving position, while others need the utility for transporting tools, kit, or equipment for work. Many models now have double-cab layouts, plush interiors, and advanced infotainment systens, which means they’re more than capable of serving as a dual-purpose vehicle for workdays and weekends.

The best used pickup trucks offer impressive load capacity, high towing limits, and often come with four-wheel drive, either as standard or as an option. This makes them ideal for rural drivers, those with trailers or caravans, or anyone who needs a capable, go-anywhere vehicle. Many pickups can tackle some pretty serious off-road conditions, with low-range gearboxes, hill descent control, and lockable differentials.

And because they’re classed as light commercial vehicles (LCVs), many pickup trucks qualify for favourable tax treatment, especially if used as a company vehicle. That makes them even more attractive to business users.

What are the best makes and models of pickup truck?

The UK pickup truck market offers something for every need and budget, from back-to-basics workhorses to high-end lifestyle trucks.

If your priotities are practicality and reliability, the Toyota Hilux, the Mitsubishi L200, and the Isuzu D-Max are top choices. All are renowned for durability, with good towing capacity, tough underpinnings, and a variety of trims ranging from utilitarian to well-equipped. The SsangYong/KGM Musso also stands out for its value, with an excellent warranty, impressive towing power, and a comfortable interior at a lower price point than many rivals.

After something more upmarket? You'll get a more car-like cabin in the Volkswagen Amarok and the Mercedes-Benz X-Class, which have high-spec interiors and better driving manners, although they're still more than capable of some heavy lifting. If performance is your thing then the Ford Ranger Raptor is one of the most exciting pickups on the market, with a twin-turbo petrol V6 under the bonnet, upgraded suspension, and rally-inspired styling.

Unlike in the US, the UK electric pickup market is still in its infancy. That said, the Maxus T90EV will give you around 200 miles of range on a full charge and has decent load-lugging ability. Expect more electric truck options in the near future – a battery-powered version of the Isuzu D-Max goes on sale in the second half of 2025, and a plug-in hybrid version of the Ford Ranger is on the way, too.

What should I look for when buying a pickup truck?

Before buying a used pickup truck, it’s important to think about what you’ll use it for day-to-day.

If you need to tow a trailer or caravan, check the maximum towing capacity, and look at whether the truck has trailer sway control or towing-specific safety features. If your priority is carrying gear, think about the payload rating and whether a single-cab or double-cab suits you better. Single cabs offer a larger load bed but seat fewer people; double cabs give you a full rear bench for passengers but reduce bed length.

Four-wheel drive is a must if you plan to drive off-road, work on rough sites, or tow heavy loads. Some models also include low-range gearing and terrain control systems for better grip in challenging conditions. However, if your usage is mostly road-based and light, a rear-wheel-drive model may offer better fuel economy – though they're less common on the used market.

It’s also worth thinking about the trim level. Entry-level pickups usually have durable but basic interiors – perfect for hard work. But if you’re using your pickup as a family or lifestyle vehicle, a higher trim will offer leather seats, sat-nav, climate control, Apple CarPlay, and more.

Finally, check the vehicle’s history carefully. Many pickups have led tough lives on construction sites or farms, so examine the load bay, underbody and suspension components for wear and corrosion. A full service history and low mileage can go a long way in ensuring longevity.
