Diesel vans remain the go-to choice for many buyers, especially when it comes to buying used. While electric vans and plug-in hybrid vans are growing in popularity, diesel still dominates when it comes to pre-owned options. Take the Ford Transit, for example: despite the availability of hybrid and electric versions, around 98% of used Transits for sale on heycar are still diesel-powered.
From small city vans to long-wheelbase panel vans, diesel options are available in all shapes and sizes, with a variety of power outputs and the choice of manual or automatic gearboxes. And while diesel engines have come under scrutiny for their emissions in recent years, the latest models are significantly cleaner and more efficient than older versions.
There are three main reasons why diesel continues to power the majority of vans on the road: fuel economy, reliability and torque (that's pulling power to you and me). For larger businesses and sole traders alike, diesel engines offer excellent long-distance efficience, often using up to 20% less fuel than a petrol equivalent and with lower CO2 emissions.
Long motorway journeys and heavy loads are where diesel vans really shine. A single tank can often deliver more than 500 miles of range, and the strong torque means you won’t struggle when the van is fully loaded or towing. Diesel engines are also well-known for their durability, which is why so many high-mileage vans continue to run reliably year after year.
The aforementioned Ford Transit has become almost synonymous with diesel vans, and it’s easy to see why. It’s been around since 1965, with millions sold worldwide. Today, it’s available in all sorts of body styles, from standard panel vans and chassis cabs to minibuses and campervans, and modern versions are surprisingly refined to drive.
Volkswagen’s diesel van range is also worth a look. The Caddy, the Transporter, and the Crafter are known for their comfort, practicality and solid build quality. Other strong contenders include the Vauxhall Vivaro, which is popular with businesses of all sizes, the premium Mercedes-Benz Vito and Sprinter, and the Citroen Berlingo, which is a great value compact van for urban use.
One of the most important checks when buying a used diesel van is which Euro emissions standard it meets. Many UK cities are introducing clean air zones, and older diesels may face charges or restrictions. Generally, Euro 6-compliant vans (sold from around 2016 onwards) are the safest bet.
You’ll also want to ensure the engine spec matches your workload. Some diesel vans come with lower-powered engines that may struggle with heavy loads or towing. If you regularly carry a full payload or trailer, go for a more powerful version.
Finally, check that the van has a full service history and has been properly maintained. Diesel engines are robust, but regular servicing is key to their longevity, especially on high-mileage vans.
