The Dacia Sandero Stepway is one of the most affordable new cars in Britain, only recently losing the title of cheapest new car to the Kia Picanto, after it ditched a few basic model options. But that makes it a great pick to buy as a super affordable used option too.
This manual or automatic five door car offers a surprisingly large amount of space for a car at this price point, meaning enough room for four adults, thanks to its raised height in that SUV style layout, while still offering plenty of boot space too. You'll see where the savings are made on the basic interior finish but since it's all well built and runs efficiently, it's difficult to fault at this price.
There are three engine choices all coming in a 1.0-litre form with two petrol and the third offering bi-fuel LPG, if that's something you have access to and want to use.
The basic trim comes with fabric finishes, mostly manual adjustments and 16-inch wheels, DAB, Bluetooth and electric front windows. But there are higher trim options if you want extras like an 8-inch infotainment setup and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.
The car handles well around town owing to its small size while the suspension is set up to make light work of bumps and potholes. Just be sure to go for the larger engine size if you want to avoid lots of noise and strain on motorway driving.
Key rivals for the Dacia Sandero Stepway include the also low priced Kia Picanto, the SUV styled Toyota Aygo X and the entry-level Citroen C3.
The Dacia Sandero Stepway is a good city car and offers that higher SUV styling to make it a worthy ride for multiple tall adults. Add in that boot space, at 328 litres, and you have a very functional city car.
There is an option to go for an automatic version, using a CVT gearbox, which can be useful in cities but isn't the quietest setup. Similarly that lower powered 65 BHP version is underpowered and frankly slow, so for motorway driving even on a semi-regular basis it's the larger 90 BHP model you'll need – the only type now produced by the company.
This car offers fantastic visibility making it well suited to city spaces, but also a nice way to take in a country drive – where the SUV styling makes this look quite at home.
This is a very affordable car so don't expect a lot of extras for the price. That said you can upgrade to different trim models which offer more options should you need a smarter setup in your version.
Extras include fitted armrests, rear electric windows, touchscreen infotainment, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus rear parking camera.
There are five trim options to pick from: Essential, Expression, Comfort, Journey and Prestige. This larger number allows you to extend budget as required rather than spending on what you might not use.
The Dacia Sandero Stepway offers impressive safety tech on its higher end models, including blind spot monitoring, but still has little on higher priced competition so don't expect this to offer higher end safety despite that larger sized styling.

The Dacia Sandero Stepway comes with the three engine choices and five trim variants to pick from as well as manual or automatic gearbox.
The entry level Essential comes with 16-inch wheels, electric front windows, Bluetooth and DAB. Step up to the Expression model and you get a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support plus cruise control.
Then there is the Comfort trim which adds electric rear windows and sat nav to that infotainment setup. Go for the Journey and you also get a centre front armrest and blind spot monitoring to add to the safety setup. Or at the top end with Prestige there is all that plus a bigger central touchscreen and a rear parking camera.
