New Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept: prices, specs and release date

Written By Richard Aucock

New Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept

The new Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept has been revealed to confirm the famous GTI hot hatch has a future even as Volkswagen gets ready for an all-electric future.

A sporty version of the well-received 2025 Volkswagen ID.2all concept car, the new Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept is the first electric GTI and arguably the star of the 2023 Munich Motor Show.

An evolution of a famous sporty brand that dates back to 1976, the new Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept will effectively succeed the current Volkswagen Golf GTI and Volkswagen Polo GTI.

It is a future rival for affordable sporty cars such as the MG4 EV and MINI Cooper Electric SE, plus the future Alpine A290. Volkswagen bosses aim for it to be a more affordable model than cars such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and Tesla Model 3. Today’s sporty Cupra Born shows the sort of thinking that will go into the new Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept.

What’s more, bosses have already confirmed the new Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept will become a showroom reality. “Production has already been decided,” guaranteeing we will be able to buy or lease the new Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept in the future. Here’s why that’s such an exciting proposition…

New Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept price and release date

The new Volkswagen ID GTI Concept is the hot version of the 2025 Volkswagen ID.2all. It is expected to be revealed in 2026 with a UK release likely in 2027.

VW bosses are being very bullish on new Volkswagen ID GTI Concept prices. They are indicating it will cost less than £30,000, which will undercut the current petrol-powered Volkswagen Golf GTI. The firm will certainly grab headlines if it's able to achieve this competitive price point.

New Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept: exterior and interior

Rather than being extreme, the new Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept intentionally has production car proportions. It is a five-door hatchback which measures around 4.1 metres long, meaning it sits between the smaller Volkswagen Polo and larger Volkswagen Golf.

GTI styling cues include a red surround for the radiator grille, a bold GTI bumper and beefy side sill extensions. Harking back to the original Volkswagen Golf GTI, the front splitter is finished in matt black. The new Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept also has large 20-inch alloys styled to mimic the original Golf wheels.

At the rear, the new Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept has a large GTI roof spoiler, again finished in black. It has black air guide elements at the side, to reduce drag. There are also GTI tail lamps in dark red, bold GTI lettering and a lower diffuser finished in black that evokes the original Golf GTI’s black bumper.

Inside, the retro GTI touches continue. The new Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept has sports seats with chequer pattern upholstery – called Jack-e in a nod to the original Jacky fabric – plus a three-spoke steering wheel and GTI experience control with a golf ball pattern.

A fully digital GTI cockpit comprises a 10.9-inch driver display which has retro-style graphics similar to the classic Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk1 ‘Pirelli’. There’s a second 12.9-inch centre touchscreen, which has an array of GTI graphics. Pleasingly, there are physical climate control buttons and a physical volume thumbwheel.

The new Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept, like the original Volkswagen Golf GTI, is practical and family-friendly. It is a full five-seater and has a particularly large 490-litre boot with the seats up – far bigger than the 380-litre boot of today’s Volkswagen Golf. Fold the seats and it expands to 1330 litres. There is an additional 50-litre stowage area under the rear seat.

New Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept: range and performance

Technical details for the new Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept have not yet been revealed. However, it is likely to share components with the upcoming new Cupra Raval electric car, which has a front-mounted 226ps electric motor driving the front wheels.

This is likely to serve up 0-62mph performance in 6.9 seconds, matching benchmark figures for previous Volkswagen Golf GTI models. A 56kWh battery will give a range of around 275 miles.

The production version of the new Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept will be front-wheel drive, like all GTI models. A faster dual-motor all-wheel drive version called GTX may follow, as could an ultra-powerful R version.

The new Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept has sporty suspension that’s 20mm lower than the Volkswagen ID. 2all. Large 20-inch wheels with 245/35 performance tyres will give plenty of grip, and sporty tuning will make it more focused and agile than the regular car.

A production version of the new Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept is all but confirmed. “GTI has a future – for our brand and for the fans,” says Volkswagen. “Production has already been decided as part of our electric offensive.”

The original Volkswagen Golf GTI had a golf ball gearknob. The Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept doesn’t have a manual gearbox – so its ‘Experience Control’ toggle has a golf ball design instead.

The new Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept is 4104mm long, 1840mm wide and 1499mm tall. Interestingly, this places it midway between the current Volkswagen Polo GTI and Volkswagen Golf GTI.
