Volkswagen has confirmed that the ID.2all showcar, revealed earllier this year, will become a new electric Polo next year.
Originally planned to be called the ID.2, the now-renamed ID.Polo is set to rival the likes of the Renault 4, MG4 and Peugeot e-208. Volkswagen has previously says its new electric car will have a range of up to 280 miles and a price tag of around £22,000.
Sitting below the existing Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4 in the brand's electric line-up, the new Volkswagen ID.Polo is based on a new entry-level vehicle platform that's designed to boost efficiency and keep costs low. Two battery choices are expected – 38kWh and 56kWh – but no specification or performance figures have yet been revealed.
As well as the "regular" model, VW has also confirmed a performance-focused, 226PS ID.Polo GTI hot hatch, which should provide customers with an alternative to cars like the Abarth 500e and the Cupra Born VZ.
The decision to swing back to VW's traditional names is set to be mirrored across the rest of the brand's electric models. Expect to see the ID.4 become the ID.Tiguan and the ID.7 become the ID.Passat, for example.
New 2026 Volkswagen ID.Polo: price and release date
We'll see the new Volkswagen ID.Polo on sale in 2026, but that's as much detail as VW has revealed so far. No pricing has yet been revealed, but VW has previously said that it hopes to keep entry costs under £22,000, which would mean it undercuts the current crop of affordable EVs, such as MG4 and the BYD Dolphin, while competing with petrol-powered options like the Toyota Yaris.

New 2026 Volkswagen ID.Polo: exterior and interior
Only a disguised version of the new ID.Polo has been revealed so far, and no interior pictures at all. The camouflaged model does give us a decent idea of how the new car will look, and we know the size of it, too – at 4053mm long, 1816mm wide and 1530mm tall, it's marginally bigger than the current Polo.
While no interior pictures have been revealed yet, early sketches from the ID.2all concept showed a 12.9-inch screen and a clean, uncluttered design.
The ID.Polo GTI's looks follows the traditional method of building on the standard car with some stylish alloy wheels and a beefier bodykit, with red elements inside – red being the generally acknowleged sporty colour when it comes to fast VWs.
