MINI's latest Cooper hatchback is now available with a set of rear doors. Deliveries of the Cooper 5 Door will begin in August.
The three-door version of the MINI Cooper has been on sale for a few months, and the more practical version joins it with prices starting at £24,050 on the road.
Power comes from a choice of petrol engines – unlike the three-door model, there's no full-electric option. Two versions are available – the MINI Cooper C and the more powerful MINI Cooper S, which costs £4000 more. Both share the styling of the three-door version almost completely, save for enhanced access to the back seats. Buyers can choose from three trims – Classic, Exclusive and Sport – that change the look of the car, and each trim has various further options to let you customise your car to your particular taste.
The MINI Cooper is a rival for other quirky small hatchbacks, ioncluding the Fiat 500, the Audi A1, the Volkswagen Polo and numerous others, as well as larger but similarly priced cars like the Volkswagen Golf and Seat Leon.
New 2024 MINI Cooper 5 Door: price and release date
The new MINI Cooper 5 Door is available to order now with the first deliveries due in August.
Prices start at £24,050 for the MINI Cooper C and £28,450 for the MINI Cooper S. Those prices are for the Classic style – add on around £2000 for the Exclusive style or around £3500 for the Sport trim.
New 2024 MINI Cooper 5 Door: exterior and interior
Take the three-door MINI Cooper, stretch it a bit (by 160mm, to be exact) and add rear doors – that's the Cooper 5 Door's design summed up. The exterior continues the retro-themed, quirky look that's been a main feature of MINI Coopers for decades, but updated with modern technology like LED lights at the front and back.
The inside is a similar story, with the now-familiar round infotainment screen evolved from earlier models and complemented by a raft of cutting-edge tech. The central 34cm OLED touchscreen can also be operated through voice control, with the top half showing driving information like speed, while the lower half house navigation, meda and climate control details. A head-up display is available as an option, and Exclusive and Sport trims get more supportive sports seats.
Speaking of trims, the Classic comes as standard with a more minimalist exterior look, a silver Mini logo and a choice of five paint finishes, with the option of contrasting roof colours and different alloy wheels. Upgraded to Exclusive and you'll get two more paint colours to choose from, with a blue interior and 17-inch alloy wheels.
Sport gives a more aggressive exterior styling and gloss black elements such as the grille surround and the logo. A rear spoilker is added and 18-inch alloys complete the sporty look.
Practicality being the main focus of the new five-door car over the three-door model, the rear doors give access to three back seats with 38mm more legroom than the Cooper 3 Door. The boot is larger too, with 275 litres of space compared to 210 in the three-door car.
New 2024 MINI Cooper 5 Door: engines and gearbox
The engine choice in the MINI Cooper 5 Door is limited to two petrol units, with no electric model, hybrids or diesels.
The MINI Cooper C uses a 1.5-litre engine with 154PS and 230NM, which translates to a 0-62mph time of 8 seconds. For some extra zing, the MINI Cooper S uses a 2.0-litre engine with 204PS and 300Nm, reducing the acceleration benchmark to 6.8 seconds.
No manual gearbox is available on the new MINI Cooper 5 Door, and a dual-clutch automatic. Sport models have an upgraded Sports Transmission with shift paddles on the steering wheel.
With extra doors and extra length over the three-door MINI Cooper, the 5 Door has more rear legroom and a larger boot at 275 litres, compared to 210 litres.
Unlike the three-door MINI Cooper Electric, there's no fully electric version of the MINI Cooper 5 Door. Just two petrol options are available.
Yes. In adding rear doors to the MINI Cooper, the car has also been lengthened by 160mm, taking the overall length to 4036mm.
