This is the new second-generation MG HS, a value-for-money family SUV that comes with petrol or plug-in hybrid power.
The new car is larger than its predecessor and promises more space inside, and prices start at less than £25,000. The petrol version is more powerful than the car it replaces, and the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model can manage up to 75 miles on a single battery charge, according to official figures. Like all MGs, it comes with a very generous seven-year/80,000 warranty.
The new 2024 MG HS will be a rival for other affordable SUVs like the KGM (formerly SsangYong) Korando and the Dacia Duster, and an alternative to similarly sized but pricier cars like the Kia Sportage, Peugeot 3008 and Nissan Qashqai.
New 2024 MG HS: price and release date
The new 2024 MG HS is on sale now, with the first deliveries of the petrol model expected by the end of July. The PHEV cars will take a little longer but are expected by the end of September.
Prices start at £24,995 for the petrol-powered HS in SE trim, while the PHEV model starts at £31,495. The top-spec Trophy trim is £2500 more on both versions.
New 2024 MG HS: interior and exterior
MG describes the look of the new HS as “more sophisticated” than its predecessor, with larger proportions and a longer wheelbase to give more space inside. The new model is 14mm wider at 1890mm, 45mm longer at 4655mm (4670mm on the PHEV models), but it sits 30mm lower for a sportier look.
The design continues the themes seen on the latest MG3, with slim LED headlights and tail lights. Five paint colours are available – White Pearl, Black Pearl, Sterling Silver Metallic, Hampstead Grey Metallic and Dynamic Red Tri-coat.
Inside there’s more room than before, and more tech, too, with two 12.3-inch screens connected together on the dash – one in the centre on infotainment duty and one behind the steering wheel, replacing traditional dials. The infotainment system, features Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and on Trophy models shows images from the car’s 360-degree camera system. MG says the quality of materials has improved from the old car, too.
The boot is larger than the old MG HS, with a capacity of 507 litres – 44 litres more than before.
New 2024 MG HS: engines, powertrains and batteries
There are two power choices for the new 2024 MG HS, starting with a 1.5-litre petrol engine with 169PS and 275Nm that comes as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, although a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is also available. It’ll reach the benchmark 62mph from standstill in 9.4 seconds.
The PHEV combines a 142PS version of the 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 210PS electric motor, which combined give the new MG HS a 0-62mph time of 6.2 seconds. MG promises an electric-only battery range of up to 75 miles, which quotes to a 5% Benefit-in-Kind tax rate for company car users.
New 2024 MG HS: trim levels
As with the old model, the new 2024 MG HS has two trim levels – SE and Trophy.
All models get an impressive safety system suite including blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and, on automatic models, adaptive cruise control. The SE features LED headlights, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, keyless entry and cruise control.
The Trophy adds 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels and front fog lights, as well as an electric boot lid, an upgraded sound system and wireless smartphone charging.
