Facelifted new 2024 Cupra Formentor revealed

The new Cupra Formentor crossover small SUV and new Cupra Leon hot hatch are facelifted versions of the sporty Spanish firm’s most popular cars.

With stronger design features, premium sound systems and upgraded infotainment, the newly updated Cupra Formentor and Cupra Leon aim to maintain customer interest in the racy sister brand to SEAT. Both refreshed cars are now available to order

A full range of new Cupra Formentor engines are available, including a plug-in hybrid. Meanwhile the new Cupra Leon is available both as a hatchback and an estate.

The revised Cupra Formentor will be a rival to other sporty SUVs, such as the Volkswagen T-Roc R and more expensive options like the BMW X2 and Mercedes-Benz GLA. The new Cupra Leon lines up against cars such as the Volkswagen Golf R, Hyundai i30N, Honda Civic Type R and more.

Facelifted 2024 Cupra Formentor and Leon: prices and release date

Both the 2024 Cupra Formentor and the 2024 Cupra Leon are available to order now.

Prices for the Formentor start at £3,450 for the entry-level V1 trim. That gets you the petrol-powered TSI 150 model – the mild-hybrid eTSI DSG 150 costs £35,475 and the plug-in hybrid (badged e-Hybrid) costs £41,510.

The Formentor V2 trim costs £35,840 for the petrol, £37,750 for the mild-hybrid and £43,785 for the plug-in hybrid. Those same power options are also available in V3 trim for £37,835, £40,040 and £46,075.

The VZ trims, which have different power options, start with the VZ1. That costs £44,845 with a more powerful version of the plug-in hybrid powertrain, or £45,685 for the still-more-powerful TSI petrol engine with four-wheel drive (badged as 4Drive).

The VZ2 trim costs £47.605 for the plug-in hybrid and £48,445 for the petrol, while the VZ3 costs £50,765 or £51,605.

To celebrate the new Formentor's launch, there's a fully-loaded VZ First Edition trim, available only with the e-Hybrid powertrain, costing £51,790.

The trim line-up on the new Leon is identical, again split over V1, V2 and V3 trims with petrol, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid power, and VZ1, VZ2 and VZ3 trims with more powerful plug-in hybrid and petrol power options. Estate VZ models have 4Drive four-wheel drive in the most powerful petrol options.

Prices start at £31,090 for the entry-level Cupra Leon TSI 150, and range to £50,975 for the top-spec Leon Estate VZ3 TSI 4Driver. VZ First Edition models, powered by the plug-in hybrid system, are also available for the Leon hatch and Leon Estate, costing £45,850 and £48,270 respectively.

The new Cupra Formentor is more distinctive from the rear, with a snazzy illuminated logo that forms part of the full-width LED light bar.

What's new with the 2024 Cupra Formentor?

The new Cupra Formentor gets a comprehensive makeover both front and rear to help it compete with a key arch-rival, the new BMW X2, along with cars such as the Audi Q3 Sportback and Alfa Romeo Tonale.

The all-new front end of the new Cupra Formentor sees the previous high-mounted grille replaced by a smoother, sleeker front bumper. The Cupra logo is now mounted higher up, and the wind-cheating new design is complemented by distinctive new triangular-shaped LED running lights. The triangular lighting design is part of the new brand look, says Cupra.

Fresh colours are available on the new Cupra Formentor too, including Century Bronze and Enceladus Grey.

At the rear, the new Cupra Formentor continues the triangular LED lighting theme. There is also a full-width LED light bar, complete with new illuminated Cupra logo in the centre.

Inside the new Cupra Formentor, the key upgrade is an all-new infotainment system, with a touchscreen that now measures 12.9 inches. It runs the latest software and now features an illuminated slider control at the bottom.

The new Cupra Formentor also gets a premium 12-speaker Sennheiser sound system, while other improvements include more upmarket materials and new bucket seats wrapped in 73% recycled microfibre or leather.

Three different engine options are available. The choice comprises TSI petrol, eTSI mild-hybrid petrol, and eHybrid plug-in hybrid.

The new Cupra Formentor eHybrid has been enhanced with an extended pure electric range of more than 50 miles, and the ability to use 50kW DC rapid chargers. It also now has a 204PS power output in V models and 272PS in VZ models.

Meanwhile, a new TSI petrol engine produces up to 333PS, and has clever torque splitter technology along with Akebono brakes.

The Cupra Leon has been updated too, gaining the same distinctive LED running lights and cleaner, meaner appearance.

Both new Cupra models have an upgraded interior with much-improved infotainment systems.

What is new with the 2024 Cupra Leon?

The new Cupra Leon has also been upgraded, and also features the snazzy Cupra logo positioned higher up on the front end. The distinctively sculptural bumper has big air intakes in its lower half, and the new Cupra Leon also uses the triangular LED running light theme of the new Cupra Formentor.

As before, the new Cupra Leon is available with bronze accents for the wheels, and there is a range of ultra-modern colours, both regular metallic and matt finish.

The new Cupra Leon also gets the upgraded infotainment system inside. The new software is much easier to use, and it includes greater use of favourite buttons on the top and bottom of the screen. The icons are more intuitive too.

The new Cupra Leon offer a similar range of engines to the new Cupra Formentor, with the 1.5 TSI and 1.5 eTSI likely to prove popular. Plug-in hybrid versions with either 204PS or 272PS are available too, also with a battery range of more than 70 miles and new DC rapid charging functionality.

The exciting 333PS TSI engine with 4Drive is available only on the new Cupra Leon Estate – the hatch version has "only" 300PS and front-wheel drive.

As with the new Cupra Formentor, the new Cupra Leon also gets an enhanced digital display behind the steering wheel, again making it feel more modern than the outgoing car.

Cupra is a fast-growing brand and sales so far this year are up 21.4% on a year ago. In March 2024, Cupra set a new monthly sales record with 23,800 deliveries.

The newly facelifted Cupra Formentor is a crossover SUV, one with family-friendly space and racy dynamics. It is currently the firm’s most popular new car.

The LED triangles in the front and rear lights of the new Cupra Formentor and Cupra Leon are a new design characteristic that will be coming to all new Cupra models in the future.
