Written By Phill Tromans

2024 Volkswagen Crafter

Volkswagen’s popular Crafter van has been upgraded for 2024 with new features inside. As before, it’s available in a variety of shapes and sizes, with prices starting at £45,660 on the road.

The Volkswagen Crafter has been on sale in its current form since 2017. The facelift brings a new 10.4-inch infotainment system, which has various connected services built in for live traffic updates and other online services. A larger screen is available as an option, but both versions sit on an updated dashboard design, with a digital driver’s display that VW calls a Digital Cockpit.

As before, the Crafter is available in a range of body styles and with various engine and gearbox combinations to suit different requirements and budgets. It’s a rival for vans like the Ford Transit, Renault Master, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and more.

New 2024 Volkswagen Crafter: interior and exterior

The Crafter’s exterior is unchanged in this update, and is still available in various sizes: CR30, with a 3000kg gross vehicle weight; CR35 (3500kg GVW); and CR50 (5000kg GVW).

It’s inside where things are different, thanks to the new infotainment system with a larger screen, and the Digital Cockpit in place of traditional dials. As standard it comes with the Composition Colour system, with a 10.4-inch screen, but customers can option the Discover Media unit in its place, which has a 12.9-inch touchscreen and satnav.

The steering wheel in the revised crafter is also new, and the electric handbrake and gear selector have been relocated for ease of use.

New 2024 Volkswagen Crafter: engines and gearboxes

The 2024 Volkswagen Crafter retains its engine line up, with the CR30 model coming with front-wheel drive and a 140PS, 2.0-litre diesel engine, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Go for the larger GR35 and you’ll have the option of a 177PS version of the TDI engine, with front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, which VW calls 4MOTION.

You can also opt for a 163PS engine with rear-wheel drive in the CR35, and it’s the standard engine in the CR50. Both the CR35 and the CR50 can be ordered with an eight-speed automatic gearbox in place of the manual.

While the first-generation Crafter was in effect a rebadged Mercedes Sprinter, the current second-generation model is entirely built by Volkswagen and no longer has any links to Mercedes.

The actual fuel economy you'll get from a Volkswagen Crafter depends on many things, including the model and engine you go for, how you drive and what you're carrying. However, according to official figures for the CR35, you can expect up to 32.5mpg, which gives you an indication.
