They’re not as stylish as SUVs or even dedicated car-style MPVs, but transportation gets no more practical than van-based MPVs like the Citroen SpaceTourer. Still offered in the brand’s range today, the SpaceTourer was introduced in 2016 and offers seating for up to eight adults, a feat denied to most conventional passenger cars.
It’s comfortable, massively spacious, and is offered with a range of frugal powertrains - even an electric variant since 2022, though we’re concentrating on the diesel models here. It’s well equipped, and has trim levels biased towards either family or business buyers, depending on your needs.
The Peugeot Traveller and Toyota Proace Verso are effectively the same car with different badges, while the Ford Tourneo Custom and Volkswagen Caravelle (later Multivan) are appealing alternatives.
If a regular MPV isn’t quite practical enough then you might want to consider a van-based MPV like the Citroen SpaceTourer. Where most MPVs offer a maximum of seven seats the Spacetourer gives you up to eight, and while the rearmost row in some MPVs is suitable only for kids and leaves you little luggage space, the Spacetourer can house adults in every seat and still leaves room for their kit.
The downside is that you still get a vehicle that looks like a van - though that’s perhaps not as much of a hurdle as it used to be, as modern vans look and feel a lot more sophisticated than they used to. And the Spacetourer isn’t too hard on the eyes anyway, with styling that echoes the brand’s regular family cars.
The cabin’s the most important part though. Different body lengths allow for more or less interior space depending on your needs, and passengers are spoiled by both comfortable seats and a high level of equipment, particularly as you go up the trim levels. Family and business variations help guide you to the most appropriate model for your needs.
It’s not the best-driving van-based MPV, with overly light steering and a manual gearshift that could be better, but just like the cabin, the ride and handling are biased towards comfort, and good forward visibility makes it an easy car to place in tight spaces - and the parking sensors and camera on higher-spec models help even more.
The SpaceTourer shares its body, engines, and many of its features with the Peugeot Traveller and Toyota Proace Verso, but there are other options out there too, including the Ford Tourneo Custom, which is pretty good to drive, and the Volkswagen Caravelle and Multivan, which can be expensive but have a quality feel. Citroen does offer a smaller van-based MPV, the popular Citroen Berlingo, too.

You’ll be able to get an idea of the ideal specification of SpaceTourer for your needs from the engines and trim levels below. If you’re a family buyer then Feel or Flair trim are more likely to meet your needs, feeling slightly more like Citroen’s other passenger cars than a commercial vehicle. Feel should be enough for most buyers, but Flair’s touchscreen, parking sensors and reversing camera will take some of the stress out of daily driving.
All engines are frugal but this again comes down to how you’re likely to use the SpaceTourer. The more powerful variants make lighter work of heavy loads or higher passenger numbers, and they also have higher towing ratings too.
The SpaceTourer range is divided between regular and ‘Business’ variants, the former comprising Feel and Flair trims and aimed more at family buyers, and the latter more at executive transport, taxi services, and other commercial uses. Equipment levels reflect this, though Flair and Business Lounge trims are quite similar, save for the latter’s four individual rear seats facing each other.

You’ll find the Citroen SpaceTourer in one of two VED or ‘road tax’ groups depending on how much it cost when new. Models with a list price over £40,000, which includes some higher-spec cars with the most powerful engines, cost £570 in the second to sixth years of registration, while cars that cost below this threshold are £180 a year.
Citroen SpaceTourer insurance groups vary between 11-27 depending on both the engine and trim level. Early, lower-powered diesels started in group 11 in Feel trim, while some of the Business Lounge variants topped group 27.
