Used Citroen C4 SpaceTourer for sale: everything you need to know

If you’re thinking that the Citroen C4 SpaceTourer looks familiar, then you’d be correct - it’s essentially a new name for the Citroen C4 Picasso and Grand Picasso that launched in 2013. The SpaceTourer name appeared in 2018 but otherwise very little changed between the two models.

Still, as Shakespeare’s Juliet asked, what’s in a name? Whatever you call this compact MPV, it’s a good example of its type, being practical, riding and handling well, and even looking a little more stylish than most people-movers. It may not be as fashionable as a crossover, but for moving people and stuff around, there’s little better.

With so many MPVs replaced by crossovers in the last few years it’s getting trickier to find real alternatives, but one comes from Citroen itself in the shape of the van-based Picasso. Other options include the Volkswagen Touran, Ford C-Max, and Vauxhall Zafira.

Should you buy a Citroen C4 SpaceTourer?

When Citroen rebranded the C4 Picasso to the C4 SpaceTourer it described it as “new name, same excellence”. And marketing speak aside it’s not too far from the mark - if you want a used MPV from the last five or ten years you could certainly do a lot worse.

Since this is an MPV, we’ll start with the interior. There are regular and Grand versions of the C4 SpaceTourer, the former getting five individual seats, the latter with seven. The rear rows fold flat, and doing so opens up a van-like space, but both models are spacious, with the caveat the rearmost row in the Grand model is meant for kids more than adults.

The C4 SpaceTourer has an interesting dashboard design too, with a wide, horizontal layout that enhances the feeling of space. Some higher-spec cars have a wide TFT display further up the dash which is also where you’ll find your instrument cluster - it’s stylish but the offset layout may not work for everyone. Quality is good though; French cars are much better than they used to be.

On the road it feels fairly light on its feet for a people-mover. Less agile than a Ford C-Max perhaps, but it’s biased towards comfort and ease of use. Great visibility helps here, the thin split windscreen pillars making a real difference. Citroen simplified the engine lineup when it changed the name too, but both petrol and diesel units, and the manual and proper automatic gearboxes do the job just fine.

The Ford C-Max, Volkswagen Touran, and Vauxhall Zafira were the C4 SpaceTourer’s main rivals when it was new, and they still make good used purchases today, so all are worth considering if the Citroen is on your list. For ultimate practicality meanwhile you can’t beat a van-based MPV like the Citroen Berlingo.

What’s the best used Citroen C4 SpaceTourer model to buy?

As the SpaceTourer only lasted for a few years before being replaced by SUVs like the C5 Aircross, we’d suggest expanding your search to the previous C4 Picasso too, and bear in mind that each variant has a ‘Grand’ version with seven seats to give you further options. We’d look for a Feel or Flair to benefit from extra equipment over the entry-level Touch, and these may well be easier to find used anyway as most customers had the same idea when buying new.

In terms of engines, it’s the usual story here. Both the petrol and diesel powerplants are pleasant enough and do the job, but if you tend to do mostly shorter trips then we’d go petrol, and if you’ll be covering plenty of miles, then the diesel may end up saving you some money, and will be able to stretch its legs more than it could on local journeys.

Used Citroen C4 SpaceTourer fuel economy and performance

  • Citroen C4 SpaceTourer Puretech 130: With a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine the C4 SpaceTourer develops 130PS, for a 9.6-second 0-62mph time with a six-speed manual gearbox - an eight-speed auto was also available. Quoted economy was up to 45.3mpg.
  • Citroen C4 SpaceTourer BlueHDi 130: The 1.5-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder had the same peak power output as the Puretech at 130PS, with a 10.4-second 0-62mph for the manual and a 9.8 second run for the automatic. Citroen claimed up to 58.1mpg combined.

What used Citroen C4 SpaceTourer trim levels are available?

The C4 SpaceTourer kept Citroen’s familiar Touch, Feel and Flair trim line options, with each version progressively adding more kit. Even the Touch is fairly well-equipped though with basics like alloy wheels, air conditioning and rear parking sensors, but when you’re buying a used model you may find there’s not much of a jump in price to get a much better equipped model.

  • The Citroen C4 SpaceTourer Touch kicked off the range with 16-inch alloy wheels, electric door mirrors, air conditioning, cruise control, rear parking sensors, a 7-inch touchscreen, fabric trim, and a height-adjustable driver’s seat.
  • The Citroen C4 SpaceTourer Feel upgraded to 17-inch alloy wheels, aluminium exterior window trim detailing, a cornering function for the front fog lights, electrically heated and folding door mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, built-in navigation, a 12-inch panoramic central display, and height adjustment for the passenger seat.
  • The Citroen C4 SpaceTourer Flair went up another inch on the alloys to 18 inches, had a panoramic sunroof, a reversing camera, park assist, keyless entry and start, fold-away tray tables for the rear seat passengers, half leather seats, blind spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and speed limit sign recognition.

Used Citroen C4 SpaceTourer dimensions and boot size

  • Length: 4438mm
  • Width: 1826mm (without mirrors), 2117mm (with mirrors)
  • Height: 1625mm (with roof bars)

The Citroen C4 SpaceTourer’s boot size is:

  • 537 litres
  • 1851 litres with the rear seats folded (to roof)

How much is it to insure a Citroen C4 SpaceTourer?

A C4 SpaceTourer with the 1.2 Puretech engine will be cheapest to insure, with a starting group rating of 20 (out of 50). Upgrading to the 1.5 BlueHDi means a group 22 rating, and while the groups don’t increase through Touch, Feel and Flair trim for the petrol, you’ll find the diesel Flair is one group higher at group 23.
