Used Citroen C4 for sale: everything you need to know

The Citroen C4 will be perfect if you’re looking for a high-riding hatchback that’s a little bit different to more predictable options, like the Volkswagen Golf or Ford Focus.

As you’d expect from a Citroen, not only is the design a little more unorthodox but this is a saloon that offers affordability, space and lots of comfort too. The other great thing about it is the way the Citroen C4 doesn’t fall into one distinct category because it’s got a hatchback, but the high-up ride offers an alternative to the likes of the Nissan Qashqai and Skoda Karoq too.

There are good options on the powertrain front, with both diesel and petrol-powered models on the used car market. Latterly, there’s also an electric model too, badged as the Citroen e-C4. All cars offer an easy to drive experience, with lots of visibility and a commanding view of the road coming from the raised driving stance.

If you’ve got family members who like their comfort, both front and rear, the Citroen C4 makes a solid choice, with wonderful seats and a ride quality that’s more than able to deal with the pothole-strewn roads of the UK. Add to that some decent trim levels, complete with all the expected infotainment options and you’ve got a car that comes keenly priced and offers great value. It’s quirky too.

Alternatives to the Citroen C4 include everything from the likes of the aforementioned Nissan Qashqai and Skoda Karoq through to the Mazda CX-30, Renault Arkana and Toyota C-HR.

If you’re looking to buy a used Citroen C4 there’s a huge amount of choice. Take a look at a Citroen C4 for sale on heycar to discover just what’s on offer.

Should you buy a Citroen C4?

The Citroen C4 is undeniably quirky, with styling that proves more than a little divisive but that’s often a draw for folks who don’t want just another Golf or Astra. If you’re happy with the looks then the Citroen C4 makes a great choice, and used examples come in various trim levels to suit every pocket.

One of the biggest plus points of the Citroen C4 is the comfort offered by its interior, most notably the seats. Add in the riding-on-air-like feel of the suspension and you’ve got a hatchback that makes light work of long journeys. It’s well appoint and trim levels cover most bases too.

Don’t expect scintillating levels of performance, but the Citroen C4 is practical and economical, making it a wise choice for families who like to stand out from the crowd.

The Citroen C4 also has competition, especially from the likes of the Ford Focus, Skoda Octavia, Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf. It’s quite lofty status also attracts the curious away from the Renault Arkana, Toyota C-HR, Mazda CX-30 and Kia XCeed too, however.

Elsewhere, it’s worth investigating the Skoda Karoq, Peugeot 3008 and Vauxhall Mokka, or if budget isn’t much of an issue you could head towards the BMW X4 or Mercedes GLC Coupe.

A Citroen C4 not for you? We've got 1000s of used cars for sale to suit all budgets and needs.

What’s the best used Citroen C4 model to buy?

Go for one of the petrol motors, unless you cover mega miles. The mid-range PureTech 130 offers a decent combination of performance and low running costs, while deciding between a manual or automatic gearbox will come down to budget and personal preference. We think the auto suits the car, though.

Used Citroen C4 fuel economy and performance

The Citroen C4 comes in a choice of powertrain options, with either petrol or diesel being the obvious ones to go for. However, more recently Citroen has added an all-electric model to the range, which might be worth considering if you’re keen to switch to an EV.

  • Citroen C4 1.2L petrol: If you like a petrol-powered car, the 1.2-litre PureTech engine is a good bet. It’s only a three-cylinder offering but power comes in either 100PS, 130PS or 155PS variants so you can head for the larger lump if more power is required. Six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic gearboxes are decent too. You’ll get from 0-60mph in 11.3, 8.9 or 8.5 seconds respectively with up to 47mpg.
  • Citroen C4 1.5-litre BlueHDi: If economy and long motorway miles beckon on a regular basis then this engine is a solid alternative. There’s a 110PS edition with a manual gearbox, but if you fancy an easy life head for the 130PS variant, which features an automatic box. You should get up to 63mpg from the diesel unit, with 0-60mph arriving in 10.5 seconds for the 110PS and up to 8.9 seconds for the 130PS edition.

What used Citroen C4 trim levels are available?

The Citroen C4 is available in four different trim levels, staring with Sense and moving up through Sense Plus, Shine to Shine Plus.

  • Citroen C4 Sense: Entry-level Sense models come with a reasonable specification with the LED headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels as standard. The interior’s not bad either with a 10-inch touchscreen display that features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with DAB radio. There’s also the lure of Citroen’s Standard Safety Pack featuring a video-assisted Active Safety Brake, Speed Limit Information, Lane Keeping Assist and Driver Attention Alert and Forward Collision Warning. On top fo that, you get an electric parking brake, rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control plus Citroen’s Connect Box Emergency and Assistance System. Sense models also come with Citroen’s Progressive Hydraulic Cushions suspension system along with Advanced Comfort seats.
  • Citroen C4 Sense Plus: It’s worth searching out a used example of the Sense Plus as it’s got the benefit of a head-up display, TomTom live navigation plus the quirk of a tablet computer holder for front-seat passengers. LED interior lighting, auto-dimming rear-view mirror and two USB sockets also feature. For parking, Sense Plus models have a rear parking camera. Electric folding door mirrors and an alarm (missing on the base spec) top it off.
  • Citroen C4 Shine: The Shine edition adds extra value, with tinted rear windows, keyless entry/start and a beefier Safety Pack Plus (including Active Safety Brake with video and radar technology), Speed Limit Information and Extended Traffic Sign Recognition, Adaptive Cruise Control and Active Blind Spot Detection.
  • Citroen C4 Shine Plus: If you’re really keen on the C4 then the Shine Plus is the best of the bunch in terms of features and functions. There’s black leather and textile upholstery, electric driver’s seat adjustment and heated front seats. A wireless phone charger, four USB sockets and Highway Driver Assist, which uses cameras to adjust the speed and direction of the car within its lane, rounds it all out nicely.

Used Citroen C4 dimensions and boot size

The Citroen C4’s dimensions are:

  • Length: 4360mm
  • Width: 1800mm
  • Height: 1525mm
  • Ground clearance: 150mm

The Citroen C4’s boot size is:

  • 380-litres

Used Citroen C4 road tax

The Citroen C4 attracts a £175 first-year VED (which is invariably factored into the on-the-road price). The figure is based on CO2 emissions and, as certain engines (namely the PureTech 130 auto and PureTech 155) emit more, they’ll cost £215 for the first year.

Once that is out of the way, buyers of used examples of all petrol and diesel C4 models will have to pay £150 a year to tax them. This is a flat rate with the exception of hybrids, which enjoy a £10 discount.

How much is it to insure a Citroen C4?

Insurance groups for the Citroen C4 depend largely on the model type, with cars starting at group 13 and rising to group 19, depending on the trim level.
