Used Citroen C4 X for sale: everything you need to know

Sibling brands Citroen, DS Automobiles, and Peugeot have all begun offering an unusual class of vehicle in the last few years - a kind of elongated, raised family car, that blurs the lines between a conventional hatch or saloon and a crossover. The C4 X is Citroen’s version, and it comes with both combustion and all-electric powertrains.

Unusually, Citroen has gone with a saloon body style for the C4 X, which means it doesn’t quite have the utility of a hatchback - though it does have a spacious interior and a decent boot. It’s interesting to look at and comfortable to drive, and if nothing else, fills a niche in the market we didn’t know we needed.

The DS 4 and the Peugeot 408 are the other French brands’ takes on the not-quite-an-SUV family car, while rival Renault has gone the other way with the Arkana, a coupe-style SUV which gets hybrid power, but no full EV option. The Cupra Formentor is another model that blurs the lines between hatch and SUV, and it gets petrol and plug-in hybrid options.

Should you buy a Citroen C4 X?

The Citroen C4 X is something of an acquired taste, thanks to its unusual styling and the use of a saloon-style boot rather than a hatchback. But if you’re reading this, you may already have decided you like the way this lifted saloon looks - so does it make a good used buy?

Broadly speaking, it does - as in most ways it’s very similar to the regular Citroen C4, which itself is a boldly-styled, comfortable, and capable car, also available with petrol, diesel and electric power. The pair basically give you a choice of whether you’d prefer a larger boot but worse access, or better access to the smaller space of the C4.

Like the C4, the C4 X’s driving experience prioritises comfort, whether you go combustion or electric - giving it a unique selling point in a class that tends to err on the side of sporty handling and often quite a firm ride. There are quicker cars too, but again the C4 X probably has more than enough performance for most families.

As the C4 X is a relatively long car for this class, legroom certainly isn’t a problem whether you’re sitting in the front or back, though the very tallest rear-seat passengers might find the roof a little close. The interior is nicely styled and well built though, and while the touchscreen isn’t the best you’ll find, Citroen has given you physical controls for the air conditioning, and audio volume.

Aside from the slightly smaller C4 and e-C4, the DS 4 and Peugeot 408 are both potential C4 X alternatives, with a more luxurious and a sportier feel respectively. Outside of this sibling rivalry, coupe-style SUVs may be an option, including the Renault Arkana and Cupra Formentor, while for the e-C4 X, conventional electric crossovers like the Kia Niro EV should be on your shopping list.

A Citroen C4 X not for you? We've got 1000s of used cars for sale to suit all budgets and needs.

What’s the best used Citroen C4 X model to buy?

The main choice with the C4 X is whether to go for the petrol or diesel options, or the electric e-C4 X. You’ll probably already know whether electric power works for you, and if it does, it’s probably the best way of experiencing the C4 X’s comfort-orientated driving experience, thanks to the EV’s silent running.

The petrol and diesel options are frugal though and actually not a lot slower than the EVs, though the normal purchase cost benefit of combustion models isn’t as much of a factor when you’re buying used, given electric cars are currently depreciating a little quicker. In terms of spec, even the entry-level You! is generous with its equipment, but the reversing camera and head-up display of Plus models make it work seeking out.

Used Citroen C4 X fuel economy, range and performance

  • Citroen C4 X PureTech 100: The entry level C4 X engine is a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol making 99PS, with a standard six-speed manual gearbox. 0-62mph is done in 11.6 seconds and combined economy is up to 54.6mpg.
  • Citroen C4 X PureTech 130: The 129PS variant of the same engine is eight-speed automatic only, and arrives at 62mph after 10.3 seconds. Economy is only a little behind the PureTech 100, at 50.7mpg.
  • Citroen C4 X BlueHDi 130: With a 1.5-litre turbodiesel making 129PS, and a standard eight-speed auto, the BlueHDi 130 gets from 0-62mph in 10.8 seconds. Economy is best of the combustion models at up to 60.4mpg.
  • Citroen e-C4 X 100kW: The first of two electric models has a 136PS motor powering the front wheels, for 0-62mph in 10 seconds. A 50kWh battery provides up to 222 miles of range, while a 20-80% fast charge at 100kW takes half an hour.
  • Citroen e-C4 X 115kW: Next up is a 156PS variant of the EV, dropping the 0-62mph time down to 9.3 seconds, while a larger 54kWh battery pack extends range to 260 miles. Charging speed is similar to the 100kW model.

What used Citroen C4 X trim levels are available?

Petrol and diesel versions of the C4 X get three trim levels and the electric e-C4 is available with four, including a range-topping e-Series model. Like the regular C4 the C4 X is well-equipped across the board - all models get 18-inch alloy wheels (though you do get different designs depending on trim level, and whether the car is the EV version), and all have the same 10-inch touchscreen, with extra features unlocked on higher-spec cars.

  • The Citroen C4 X You! gets 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, rear parking sensors, dual-zone air conditioning, electric and heated door mirrors, auto lights and wipers, keyless entry and start, cruise control with a speed limiter, grey fabric interior trim, and a 10-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
  • The Citroen C4 X Plus adds a reversing camera, more features for the touchscreen including built-in navigation, extra USB power sockets, and a head-up display.
  • The Citroen C4 X Max has chrome exterior trim elements, additional electronic safety features over the two models below it, front, rear and side parking sensors, auto high beams, adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, an upgraded audio system, even more USB sockets, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel (except e-C4) and Alcantara trim.
  • The Citroen e-C4 X e-Series is only available on the e-C4, and adds Highway Driver Assist, a black painted roof, a heated steering wheel, and wireless smartphone charging.

Used Citroen C4 X dimensions and boot size

The Citroen C4 X’s dimensions are:

  • Length: 4600mm
  • Width: 1834mm (without mirrors)
  • Height: 1525mm

The Citroen C4 X’s boot size is:

  • 510 litres
  • 1360 litres with the rear seats folded (to roof)

Used Citroen C4 X road tax

As a fully electric vehicle the e-C4 X won’t cost a penny in road tax for the time being, but the combustion models will set you back the usual flat rate of £180.

How much is it to insure a Citroen C4 X?

The petrol and diesel C4 X range spans insurance groups 15 to 22, with a 1.2-litre PureTech You! at the lower end of this range and a 1.5 BlueHDi in Max trim at the top. Surprisingly, and unlike many electric cars, the e-C4 X shouldn’t be much more expensive to insure than the upper end of the combustion models, sitting in insurance groups 21-22 depending on specification.
