New 2024 Volkswagen ID.3 GTX: exterior and interior

The new Volkswagen ID.3 GTX is VW’s first-ever electric hot hatch. It invented the category with the original Volkswagen Golf GTI and now wants to continue the evolution into the electric era.

The new Volkswagen ID.3 GTX gets a bespoke front bumper with a diamond-style black air intake. It also has triangle-shaped LED daytime running lights on either side, while the LED headlights are connected by an LED light bar.

Further back, the new Volkswagen ID.3 GTX has high-gloss black door mirrors and side sill extensions, which blend into a big rear diffuser. 20-inch Skagen alloy wheels are standard.

The new Volkswagen ID.3 GTX will be available in five colours, including Kings red metallic, Moonstone grey, Grenadilla black metallic, Glacier white metallic and Scale silver metallic.

Inside, the new Volkswagen ID.3 GTX has premium sports seats in fabric and leatherette. They feature red stitching and perforated GTX lettering in the front backrests.

The new Volkswagen ID.3 GTX steering wheel also has red stitching and a GTX logo, while other GTX-specific red elements add to the sportiness.

Notably, the new Volkswagen ID.3 GTX comes with an all-new infotainment system. The touchscreen is a larger 12.9-inches and has an new, more intuitive menu structure. It also has a voice assistant called IDA which answers specific questions by accessing Wikipedia and ChatGPT.

To make space for the larger display, the driving mode selector has been moved to a column stalk, similar to that in the new Volkswagen ID.7.

The new Volkswagen ID.3 GTX has a four-seat interior layout.

The new Volkswagen ID.3 GTX is available with two power outputs, with the Performance model offering 326PS for 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds.

New 2024 Volkswagen ID.3 GTX: range and performance

The new Volkswagen ID.3 GTX uses a brand-new drive motor called Volkswagen APP550. This is available with two power outputs, either 286PS or, in GTX Performance guise, 326PS. It drives the rear wheels.

Official performance figures for the new Volkswagen ID.3 GTX are still to be confirmed. Engineers predict the standard 286PS version will accelerate from 0-62mph in 6.0 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 111mph.

The new Volkswagen ID.3 GTX performance is predicted to accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds. It will have an electronically limited top speed of 124mph.

Both new Volkswagen ID.3 GTX will use a 79kWh battery. They are forecast to have a range of over 370 miles.

The new Volkswagen ID.3 GTX has specific suspension tuning with a firmer setup for less body roll and more precision.

The range-topping new Volkswagen ID.3 GTX Performance has standard DCC adaptive chassis control, overseen by a clever Vehicle Dynamics Manager. This increases the spread between maximum comfort and ultimate sportiness. Drivers can choose Eco, Comfort, Sport or Individual drive modes.

Volkswagen Golf GTI (2014-2019) Review Front Side View

Want a fast Volkswagen hatchback with a petrol engine?

If you want a fast car that can fit your life like a glove, the Volkswagen Golf GTI is one of your best bets. It's grown-up looking and practical, but also fun on the right road.

Around £15,000 is all you need to get your hands on a 2015 model with high-ish miles. Rather have the current model? Well, around £32,000 gets you behind the wheel of a 2020 car with less than 15,000 miles on the clock.

There isn't presently a four-wheel-drive version of the Volkswagen ID.3 but that is set to change with the launch of the hot GTX model.

The Volkswagen ID.3 is one of our favourite new electric cars. It has a roomy interior for its size and its instant punch makes it ideal for nipping in and out of gaps in town.

The Volkswagen Golf is slightly longer than the Volkswagen ID.3 – 4284mm versus 4261mm –  however, the ID.3 counters by being both wider and taller.
