New 2026 Renault Twingo small electric car

The new Renault Twingo marks the reinvention of the firm’s iconic 1990s city car as a pure electric four-seater that’s due to go on sale in 2026.

Excitingly, the new Renault Twingo promises to be a highly affordable electric car which, like the original, will help bring modern car motoring to the masses.

The new Renault Twingo will also appeal because of its modern retro styling – it is a fresh reinterpretation of the much-loved original. Company boss Luca de Meo describes it as a “fit-for-purpose urban vehicle with no compromise”.

The new Renault Twingo will sit below the upcoming new Renault 5 small car and new Renault 4 small SUV in a three-car EV range. It will go head-to-head with the upcoming new Citroen e-C3, another affordable new electric car, along with the new Dacia Spring that’s due to arrive in the UK in 2024.

New 2026 Renault Twingo: price and release date

The new Renault Twingo promises to be one of the most accessible new electric cars on sale. The company is anticipating a price of below £17,000, with monthly finance payments from around £85 a month.

The new Renault Twingo will go on sale in 2026, with pre-ordering opening ahead of its UK release date for those eager to be first behind the wheel of the new Renault Twingo EV.

New 2026 Renault Twingo: exterior and interior

The new Renault Twingo is the latest classic Renault to be given a modern makeover. As with the new Renault 5 and new Renault 4, the exterior design brings back the spirit of the pretty 1990s model.

The new Renault Twingo continues with the ‘monospace’ profile of the first Renault Twingo. This miniature MPV design is extremely space-efficient, and also gives the new Renault Twingo a distinct appearance alongside more traditional small EVs.

Classic details have been reinvented on the new Renault Twingo, from the cute ‘frog’s eye’ headlights that now comprise bright LED roundels, to the exaggerated round circles for the doorhandles.

The new Renault Twingo has a distinctive look at the rear as well, with a contrast black tailgate surround and more cute round LED lights. It also has large wheels, flared wheelarches and neat integrated bumper overriders that will help protect it from parking prangs.

We don’t know what the new Renault Twingo’s interior will look like. However, the firm has confirmed it will use a Google Android-based software setup, with a similarly feature-packed infotainment touchscreen to latest models such as the Renault Austral. Expect video streaming, plenty of apps, comprehensive connectivity and much more besides.

The new Renault Twingo will be roomy inside, helped by its dedicated space-efficient electric car underpinnings. Expect roomy seats for four and, like the original, flexible rear chairs that may slide and fold. The boot may not be huge, but should be big enough for city centre life.

New 2026 Renault Twingo: electric motor and battery

The new Renault Twingo will boast best-in-class efficiency, promises the firm. The engineers say its lifecycle CO2 emissions will be a huge 75% less than an average petrol-engined car in Europe – its eco credentials will go beyond simply having zero tailpipe emissions.

It’s too soon to say what size battery the new Renault Twingo will have. Given its city car credentials, it may be around 40kWh, which should give a range of around 150-200 miles on the WLTP cycle. For those who restrict it to city use, the range will be greater still, minimising how often it will need to be charged.

The new Renault Twingo will probably have a front-wheel drive platform, in the interests of both space efficiency and stable handling. Expect zippy performance up to the legal speed limit, and levels of electric car refinement the original Renault Twingo could only dream of.

The new Renault Twingo is a car for the future, but if you can’t wait until 2026 yet still want an affordable EV, it’s time to consider a Renault Zoe. The latest-generation car has a range of around 240 miles and combines a stylish exterior with a well-equipped interior. You can buy a two-year-old model with less than 10,000 miles on the clock from around £13,000, which strikes us as great value for money.

The new Renault Twingo is an affordable city-sized car. It will be smaller than the new Renault 5 and new Renault 4, but still offer four-door practicality.

The new Renault Twingo will be based on the Renault AmpR Small electric car architecture – it was formerly known as CMF-B-EV.
