Used Hyundai iX35 for sale: everything you need to know

The Hyundai iX35 is a family SUV that offers very generous passenger space, a huge boot and lots of standard features for an affordable price. If that sounds like the kind of used car that suits you, keep reading to find out everything you need to know.

Here, you’ll discover what living with the iX35 is like, which engines and trim levels are available, and how they all relate to each other. There are plenty of them out there – while you’re here, why not check out the iX35 models in stock at heycar?

Should you buy a Hyundai iX35?

Behind the iX35’s distinctive styling there is a very spacious interior. Four tall adults can fit with room to spare and it has a vast 591-litre boot capacity. Most families are unlikely to need more space than that. Yet the iX35 isn’t a particularly big car on the outside. It’s only a couple of inches longer than a Ford Focus, and much shorter than other similarly spacious SUVs. That’s a big help when you need to park it.

The iX35’s interior marked a big leap forward in design for Hyundai. Even today, it’s still a pleasant place to spend time. It’s obvious what all the various buttons and knobs do - they’re easy to use and feel robust. It’s comfortable to travel in as well. The ride is on the firm side, but you don’t get jiggled around and the seats are quite supportive. Not much external noise gets transmitted to the cabin, either.

From behind the wheel, the iX35 feels better than you might expect. It’s light and agile, you have a great view out, and bumps and holes in the road don’t knock it off course. The engines provide perfectly adequate performance for most people’s needs, accelerating quickly enough and cruising along the motorway happily.

A broad spread of trim levels was available, ranging from value-focused to rather lavish. There was one petrol engine and two diesels. Most models have a manual gearbox and front-wheel drive, but you can get an automatic and four-wheel drive if you prefer. The latter is particularly useful if you need to tow anything. The 4WD iX35 can haul up to 2000kg.

If you’re looking for a used family car of any sort, it’s worth considering the Hyundai iX35. It gives you a lot of space and standard features, plus a pleasant driving experience, for not very much money.

The iX35 had a relatively low price tag when it was new and that remains the case as a used car. In percentage terms, though, retained values are comparable with other mid-size SUVs. Hyundai has a long-held reputation for building extremely reliable cars that are quite satisfying to own, and that’s certainly the case here.

What's the best used Hyundai iX35 model to buy?

Most used buyers will be best served by the Hyundai iX35 fitted with the 1.7 litre turbodiesel engine with manual gearbox. It's smooth, quiet and easy on fuel. If you need to tow a caravan, the 2.0 litre diesel will be better allied to four-wheel drive, but it will have an impact on economy. The 1.6 petrol is decent, if a little uninspiring to drive.

With the iX35 firmly into used territory, we'd look for the top spec Premium model as it comes with all of the kit you could want. This puts the Hyundai on a par with many more modern rivals when it comes to luxury and safety equipment.

Used Hyundai iX35 fuel economy and performance

You can choose between one petrol engine and two diesels in the iX35. They’re all relatively smooth and quiet, and they accelerate quickly enough. The diesels were more popular than the petrol engine, and they offer better fuel economy.

  • Hyundai iX35 1.6 GDi petrol – This is a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder engine that produces 136PS – quite a lot of power for an engine this size without a turbocharger. A 0-62mph run takes 10.7 seconds and it emits 158g/km of CO2. It comes with a six-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive.
  • Hyundai iX35 1.6 GDi Blue Drive petrol – This is exactly the same engine as the one above, but it’s fitted with a stop-start system that turns the engine off when the car comes to a stop, then restarts it before setting off again. Performance is unchanged, but CO2 emissions are reduced to 149g/km.
  • Hyundai iX35 1.7 CRDi diesel – This was the most popular engine in the iX35. It’s a 1.7-litre four-cylinder turbocharged unit that produces 115PS. It’s fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive. Zero to 62mph takes 12 seconds and CO2 emissions are 139g/km.
  • Hyundai iX35 2.0 CRDi diesel – The more powerful of the two diesels is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine with 136PS. Four-wheel drive is fitted as standard and you can choose between manual or automatic gearboxes, both of which have six speeds. The manual takes 10.9 seconds to accelerate from 0-62mph and emits 145g/km of CO2. The corresponding figures for the automatic version are 11.7 seconds and 179g/km.

What used Hyundai iX35 trim levels are available?

The Hyundai iX35 trim levels start with ‘S’ grade, which is pretty well-equipped for an entry-level model from the 2010s. Top-of-the-range versions of the Hyundai are pretty lavishly equipped.

  • Hyundai iX35 S – The entry-point iX35 comes with all the basics that you need for life on the road. These include air conditioning, a radio/CD player, a trip computer and front and rear electric windows.
  • Hyundai iX35 Style – This was the earlier version of the SE trim and comes with the same level of kit, such as cruise control, dual-zone climate control air-con, Bluetooth, heated front seats and rear parking sensors.
  • Hyundai iX35 SE – Go for an SE and you get lots of extra features, including cruise control, dual-zone climate control air-con, Bluetooth, heated front seats and rear parking sensors.
  • Hyundai iX35 SE Nav – As the name suggests, this trim level has all the same standard features as the SE, plus satellite navigation. You also get a reversing camera.
  • Hyundai iX35 Premium – The main additions to the Premium trim level’s standard features over and above the SE Nav are leather seat upholstery, heated rear seats and bi-xenon headlights.
  • Hyundai iX35 Premium Panorama – On top of everything you get with the Premium trim level, the Panorama adds a full-length glass sunroof with a tilt/slide opening section above the front seats.

Used Hyundai iX35 dimensions and boot size

The Hyundai iX35’s exterior dimensions are:

  • Length: 4410mm
  • Width: 1820mm
  • Height: 1665mm

The Hyundai iX35’s boot capacity is:

  • Rear seats up: 591 litres
  • Rear seats folded down: 1436 litres

Used Hyundai iX35 road tax

The 1.7 litre turbodiesel engine is the most commonly found in the Hyundai iX35 and it attracts an annual road tax cost of £180. For the 2.0 litre diesel, you'll be looking at road tax costs of between £200 and £320 per year. The 1.6 petrol comes in at £200 or £240 depending on whether you choose the Stop/Start version or not.

How much is it to insure a Hyundai iX35?

The iX35 is rated in the lower half of the insurance group scale, slotting into groups 14 to 22 (out of 50), depending on exactly which model you choose. Annual premiums should be affordable as a result.
