The Hyundai i20N is the performance version of the popular Hyundai i20 hatchback. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for a small hot hatch, with the comfort, equipment and practicality of the standard i20, plus enhanced driving fun.
First sold in 2021, the i20N is relatively unusual as a small performance hatchback amid a sea of competitors more focused on comfort and fuel economy. While there are great hatchback options, like the Skoda Fabia, Toyota Yaris and Nissan Micra, few offer high-performance variants. That said, the i20N does have some worthy rivals in the shape of the Ford Fiesta ST, the Volkswagen Polo GTI and the Mini Cooper S.
The key appeal to the i20N is its fun factor, coupled with good value for money. Not many cars of this size have the potential to be this much fun, and it comes well-equipped as standard.
Looking for a car that’s exhilarating yet practical and stylish at the same time? Then the Hyundai i20N could be for you. It’s not perfect – it’s quite firm during normal driving, and it’s not quite as rounded as the Ford Fiesta ST – but when you find an open road and open the engine up, it’s an absolute blast. A one-trick pony? Perhaps, but it’s a great trick.
A limited-slip differential enhances front-wheel grip during cornering, and the i20N has various driving modes that can adjust the diff, steering, accelerator and exhaust to suit different conditions. It also flaunts its motorsport inspiration with a satnav that has race tracks programmed in, and it’ll display them on the screen when you drive on them.
Practicality levels are largely identical to the standard i20 – it’s a small car but spacious for its size, with enough room in the back for a couple of adults and a reasonable boot space that’s comparable to its rivals at 352 litres. There’s a movable boot floor that lets you level off the load lip or maximise storage space, the rear seats fold down in a 60/40 split.
You will have to compromise in the name of fun, but if you take the i20N out to find the right road, you’ll have a whale of a time.

Because the i20N is a variant of the wider Hyundai i20 range, there’s not much to choose from if you want to buy – there’s one trim and one engine, with a manual gearbox and no auto option. You get plenty of kit with it, though – all the essentials are standard, along with lots of extras. About the only optional extra is an upgraded Bose sound system.

The Hyundai i20N comes in under the £40,000 price threshold for luxury car tax in the UK, which means you’ll pay just the flat rate of Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax). At the time of writing, that’s £190 per year.
As the most powerful, sporty option in the Hyundai i20 range, the i20N has a higher insurance group than other models. But with an insurance group of 27 (of 50), it’s still pretty reasonable for the fun you’ll get. It’s around the same as the Ford Fiesta ST and Mini Cooper S.
