The Citroen C3 Aircross is a small SUV meaning you get that safe feeling from the ride height but without the larger overall car, making this easier to handle in cities and on smaller roads.

There are two petrol models and one diesel variant to pick from. In all variants you won't get masses of power but with the softer suspension this favours it does offer a comfy ride.

Key rivals for the Citroen C3 Aircross include the Volkswagen T-Cross and the Skoda Kamiq, although neither has quite the same personality as the C3 Aircross.

Should you buy a used Citroen C3 Aircross?

The Citroen C3 Aircross is a good option if you want the styling of an SUV that gets you that ride height and boot space, but without the need for four wheel drive. 

If you want a car that stands out from the others, so you can spot it easily in the car park, this certainly delivers with plenty of French design quirk. And the minimal engine options gives you more space to think about the funky variations on internal and external design that you want to go for.

While this is a viable city option, smaller than most SUVs, it can still make short work of motorway driving with comfort and quiet. And when you look at a combined 48 MPG on average you won't need to worry too much about fuel costs either.

There are some great basic features like those 16-inch alloys, LED headlights and rear parking sensors. But you can also get the higher spec versions for features like larger 9-inch infotainment setup with built-in navigation.

There are four trim options to pick from: C-Series Edition, Shine, Shine Plus and the Rip Curl.

The Citroen C3 Aircross offers an impressive boot at 380 litres in the bottom two trims but bumps that up to 410 litres with the rear bench set up, or slide it all the way forwards to get a massive 520 litres of boot space, albeit without rear passenger seats.

This car comes with a five star Euro NCAP from 2017 thanks to active features like lane departure warning, cruise control with limiter and speed and traffic sign detection.

What’s the best used Citroen C3 Aircross model to buy?

The Citroen C3 Aircross comes with those four trim variations but which is ideal for you not only depends on what you want to spend but on what extras you need. As mentioned, if it's all about boot space then you'll want to go for the Shine Plus to get that ability to open it right up without those rear passenger seats. 

If you want to go for a more funky finish then the Rip Curl is ideal. This offers premium features like auto headlights, tinted rear windows, leather steering wheel, aluminium-effect rear bumper protector and more.

For a premium finish aimed at sportier fans the Shine features a leather steering wheel and gear lever as well as rev counter – making it more of a driver's car. This also comes with electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors.

For alloy wheels, the largest you get is on the Shine Plus model which offers larger 17-inch wheels. This the most premium model as it also offers keyless entry, cornering illumination, privacy glass and that pull-out boot floor.

• Citroen C3 Aircross 1.2-litre petrol: The first engine choice is one that offers 110 BHP for a 0-60 MPH time of 10.1 seconds and about 48 MPG with 134 g/km CO2.
• Citroen C3 Aircross 1.2-litre petrol: The next level up is the same size but tuned to offer 130 BHP which means a 0-60 MPH time of 9.2 seconds and a 40 MPG average and 140 g/km CO2.
• Citroen C3 Aircross 1.5-litre diesel: This diesel model also offers the higher end 130 BHP which should get you a 50 MPG return and 0-60 MPH in 10.2 seconds and 125 g/km CO2.
