Audi SQ2 for sale: everything you need to know

The Audi SQ2 is the high-performance version of Audi’s Q2, a premium small SUV. The SQ2 mixes the luxurious look and feel of the Q2 with sporty styling and a powerful engine, and is aimed at drivers looking for a small SUV that’s both stylish and fun to drive.

The SQ2 has been on sale since 2019 and was given a refresh in 2021. It’s a rival for other similarly sized performance SUVs such as the BMW X2 M35i and the Mercedes-AMG GLA 35. You may also be considering it alongside more traditional hot hatches like the Volkswagen Golf R and the Mini John Cooper Works.

Should you buy an Audi SQ2?

If you like the look of the standard Audi Q2, but wish it was quicker and more fun behind the wheel, then the SQ2 could be just what you need. It does just about everything that the regular Q2 can do in terms of quality and comfort, but adds a layer of performance and subtle, sporty styling to increase its appeal.

It sits 20mm lower than the standard car, giving it more of a hot hatch look, and the sports suspension is also stiffer for enhanced cornering, although that comes at the expense of a small amount of ride comfort over the Q2. The payoff is great body control for a car of this type, and a greater feeling of precision in the steering.

Power comes from a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that makes 300PS, with lots of low-down torque that, combined with the standard quattro all-wheel-drive system, makes for rapid acceleration – 0-62mph takes less than five seconds.

Inside, you’ll find a very well made and very comfortable interior that oozes premium quality, although the level of tech feels slightly dated compared to some other Audi models. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though, because the infotainment system is very easy to use through a rotary dial between the front seats, and is considerably more accessible on the move than more modern touchscreen-only systems.

The specification levels are high, reflecting its status as the most expensive Audi Q2 model. As standard, you’ll get LED headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels (with 19-inch numbers available as an option), with leather or Alcantara upholstery inside. Post-facelift models get an upgraded infotainment screen with an 8.3-inch screen as well as a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, rather than traditional analogue dials. Several trim levels are available that add a few choice extras.

The space for this type of car isn’t exactly vast. Larger adults will feel cramped in the back, and with a narrow middle seat it’s really only a four-seater. The front is much better however, with ample space and lots of storage spaces. The boot is smaller than the regular Q2 because of the four-wheel-drive components, and at 355 litres it’s on the tight side compared to rivals.

An Audi SQ2 not for you? We've got 1000s of used cars for sale to suit all budgets and needs.

What’s the best used Audi SQ2 model to buy?

As far as power goes there’s only one choice – a 300PS 2.0-litre petrol engine mated to a seven-speed S tronic automatic gearbox. So your decisions will need to be in trim level, and it basically comes down to how many luxuries you want. The standard SQ2 comes pretty well equipped, although pre-facelift models were specced by the original owner by adding option packs. Look out for models with the Technology Pack and the Comfort and Sound Pack, which added features like the Virtual Cockpit digital driver’s display and a Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Later models introduced specific trims, including the standard model, the Black Edition and the Vorsprung. We think the standard car has everything you’ll need, but the Black Edition adds a stealthier look and the Vorsprung comes fully loaded with features like matrix LED headlights, exclusive alloy wheels and Nappa leather seats.

Used Audi SQ2 fuel economy and performance

  • Audi SQ2 2.0 TFSI 300 petrol: The sole engine in the SQ2 range is a 2.0-litre petrol engine with 300PS and 400Nm, mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox. Powering all four wheels, it’ll hit 62mph from standstill in 4.9 seconds, with an official fuel economy of up to 34mpg.

What used Audi SQ2 trim levels are available?

Early SQ2 models were only available in standard form, but the 2021 facelift added a couple of extra trims:

  • Audi SQ2: The standard car came with 18-inch alloy wheels over black brake callipers, dual-zone climate control and leather upholstery. Post-facelift, it included a powered boot lid, LED headlights and leather and Alcantara upholstery, with the Virtual Cockpit driver display and an 8.3-inch infotainment screen.
  • Audi SQ2 Black Edition: The Black Edition model boasts 19-inch grey wheels with black detailing on the exterior.
  • Audi SQ2 Vorsprung: The top-spec SQ2 has Nappa leather upholstery, rear dynamic indicators and matrix LED headlights, as well as a panoramic sunroof and a Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Used Audi SQ2 dimensions and boot size

The Audi SQ2’s exterior dimensions are:

  • Length: 4216mm
  • Width: 1802mm
  • Height: 1524mm

The Audi SQ2’s boot size is:

  • 355 litres
  • 1000 litres with rear seats folded

Used Audi SQ2 road tax

The cost for Vehicle Excise Duty (car tax) on an Audi SQ2 will depend on its price when it was new. Most models, but not all, cost more than £40,000 (including options) when new, which means they attract a luxury car surcharge on the annual tax figure. If you’re lucky enough to have one that cost less than that, it’ll cost you £190 a year, but the rest will cost £600 until six years after first registration. After that they’ll revert to the regular £190 flat rate.

How much is it to insure an Audi SQ2?

As a performance car, and a premium car, insurance for the Audi SQ2 won’t be particularly cheap, but it’s not hugely expensive either. It sits between insurance groups 33 and 39 (of 50), which is lower than some rivals.
