Used Audi TT Roadster for sale: everything you need to know

The Audi TT Roadster is a top-down version of Audi’s very popular sports car, mixing sharp styling with agility and a premium interior, plus the added bonus of the wind in your hair when the weather allows.

On sale between 2015 and 2023, with a revamp in 2018, the TT Roadster can be a great everyday car or a dedicated weekend fun-mobile. It’s a car that deserves to be seriously considered alongside rivals like the Porsche 718 Boxster, the BMW Z4 and the Mercedes-Benz SLC. Having been on sale for such a long time, there are lots of used examples to choose from at various different budgets.

Should you buy an Audi TT Roadster?

The Audi TT Roadster’s appeal lies in its overall packaging. As we describe it in our review, it’s the go-to performance car for people that don’t really like sports cars, with smart looks and nimble handling but with reasonable running cost and a great quality interior.

Unlike the excellent Porsche 718 Boxster or the BMW Z4, you can get a TT Roadster with a diesel engine for long-distance driving, although a range of petrol engines is more common. These range from the brisk and relatively efficient to the very powerful. You can also choose between front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive and manual or automatic gearboxes.

As the convertible version of the TT Coupe, the TT Roadster has the extra allure of a foldable canvas roof, which stows away at the touch of a button in around 10 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph. It’s triple-layered construction gives you good insulation from road and wind noise when the roof is in place. When stowed away, it adds open-air exhilaration to the driving experience, and in the more powerful TTS and TT RS versions lets you hear the sonorous tones of the TT Roadster’s sports exhaust system.

If you’re after the sharpest handling sports car then the TT Roadster might not be for you. Porsche’s 718 Boxster is more nimble and fun on a twisting road, while the TT feels a bit more sensible. For many, though, that’s part of its appeal.

While practicality levels are good for this type of car, with a 280-litre boot, it’s not quite as roomy for carrying things as a BMW Z4. As far as the interior goes, however, there’s not much to beat the TT Roadster – it’s made with top-quality materials and loaded with technology.

An Audi TT Roadster not for you? We've got 1000s of used cars for sale to suit all budgets and needs.

What’s the best used Audi TT Roadster model to buy?

What Audi TT Roadster is best for you depends on your priorities and how you’ll drive it. For pure fun, it’s hard to overlook the powerful TTS and TT RS models, which have rapid acceleration and sound particularly great with the roof down. If you want a stylish convertible and do lots of longer distances, then a diesel-powered 2.0 TDI model might suit you better.

The most common TT Roadsters on the used market use the 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engine, which is available with a variety of power outputs. However, even the least powerful model still has nippy acceleration. The Sport trim has everything you’ll need, too, meaning that this TT Roadster is both affordable and comfortable. You can pay extra for the snazzy looks of the S line model if style is particularly important to you.

Used Audi TT Roadster fuel economy and performance

  • Audi TT Roadster 1.8 TFSI petrol: The entry-level TT Roadster has 180PS and 250Nm, giving it a 0-62mph time of around seven seconds. It promised a fuel economy of up to 47.1mpg according to official figures.
  • Audi TT Roadster 2.0 TFSI petrol: The most common engine used in the Audi TT Roadster comes in various power outputs and with various badges over the car’s life. You’ll find the 197PS and 230PS versions are plentiful, badged on later models as the TFSI 40 and the TFSI 45. The TFSI 40 does 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds while the TFSI 45 manages 5.9 seconds. The higher-powered model later had 245PS, dropping the acceleration time to 5.5 seconds. Fuel economy is up to 40.4 mpg for the TFSI 40 and up to 42.2mpg for the TFSI 45.
  • Audi TTS Roadster 2.0 TFSI petrol: The mid-point between sensible and harcore, the TTS Roadster upped power from the 2.0-litre engine to 310PS (later rising to 320PS). It will reach 62mph in 4.8 seconds and promises up to 33.2mpg.
  • Audi TT Roadster 2.0 TDI diesel: The diesel-powered TT Roadster developed  a not-too-shabby 184PS and 380Nm, meaning a 0-62mph time of 7.0 seconds and an MPG of 58.9mpg.
  • Audi TT RS Roadster 2.5 TFSI petrol: The TT Roadster’s most potent engine is used in TT RS Roadster. It develops 400PS and 480Nm which equals a 3.9-second sprint to 62mph.

What used Audi TT Roadster trim levels are available?

  • Audi TT Roadster Sport: The entry-level Audi TT Roadster actually has a very decent equipment list. This varied over the decade that the car was on sale, but broadly speaking you can expect 18-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, air conditioning and Alcantara upholstery. Audi’s MMI infotainment system is included, featuring satnav and the Virtual Cockpit, which is a digital driver display in place of analogue dials.
  • Audi TT Roadster S line: The second-tier trim level builds on the Sport model with 19-inch wheels and more sporty bodystyling, as well as the option of 10mm lowered sports suspension. This was a no-cost option, so check to see which setup is fitted to the car you’re looking at. Many other options were available, including a B&O sound system, so it’s rare to find a TT Roadster exactly the same as another.
  • Audi TT Roadster Black Edition: As the name suggests, the Black Edition adds black styling details – the front grille, the mirror and the wheels are all painted a dark hue.
  • Audi TT Roadster Vorsprung: The fully loaded standard TT Roadster is handsomely kitted out with electrically adjustable seats, reversing camera and matrix LED headlights, as well as extra safety systems.
  • Audi TT Roadster 20 Years: A limited edition model from 2018, the 20 Years model includes grey exterior paint, brown nappa leather interior and TT 20 Years badges inside,
  • Audi TT Roadster Final Edition: Introduced in 2023 to mark 25 years and the end of the Audi TT, the Final Edition mixes the black styling details of the Black Edition with 20-inch wheels and red brake callipers, as well as a red-stitched Alcantara steering wheel and a choice of three metallic paint colours.
  • Audi TTS Roadster: The sportier version of the TT Roadster comes with adaptive dampers, which let you stiffen or soften the ride to match the conditions, as well as just about all the above comfort and entertainment features.
  • Audi TT RS Roadster: The top-spec performance TT Roadster rides on 19 in wheels as standard, finished in silver, matt titanium or black. Upgraded brakes and more extreme body styling set it apart, and inside there’s a dedicated RS steering wheel.

Used Audi TT Roadster dimensions and boot size

The Audi TT Roadster’s exterior dimensions are:

  • Length: 4191mm
  • Width: 1832mm
  • Height: 1355mm

The Audi TT Roadster’s boot size is:

  • 280 litres

Used Audi TT Roadster road tax

The Audi TT Roadster’s production spanned the change in Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax) rules in April 2017, which means how much you’ll have to pay each year depends on when your car was first registered. It’ll also depend on the model. After April 2017, the cost will also depend on how much the car cost when new, including options, as cars that cost more than £40,000 attract a surcharge for five years after the second year of registration.

Cars registered after April 2017 attract the flat rate of tax which at the time of writing is £190 a year. Those costing more than £40k will cost £600 until they’re six years old. Older models will vary depending on their CO2 emissions, but will generally cost you between £160 and £385 a year.

How much is it to insure an Audi TT Roadster?

Insurance for the Audi TT Roadster sits between insurance groups 35 and 43 of 50, which is on the pricey side. This reflects its premium and performance nature.
