Subaru reveals new 2026 Trailseeker and Solterra EVs

Subaru has pulled back the covers on two new electric cars – the all-new Trailseeker and a facelifted version of the Solterra.

The new Subaru Trailseeker is, essentially, a spiritual successor to the Outback estate (the latest Outback now being an SUV). Though technically also an SUV, the Trailseeker has a squared-off estate-like shape with rugged design elements and permanent all-wheel drive.

With a 74.6kWh battery, the Trailseeker promises a range of more than 260 miles, and it's powerful, with its dual motors making a combined 375PS. It'll tow up to 1600kg and has a 21cm ground clearance for challenging terrain.

The name Trailseeker is being used in the US, but may change when it comes to the UK.

The facelifted Solterra, meanwhile, gets a big overhaul with radical new looks, more efficiency and more performance thanks to a new powertrain and the same battery as the Trailseeker (both cars share a common platform underneath). The new Solterra promises up to 289 miles on a single charge and puts out 343PS.

No UK prices or specs have been announced for either car as yet, but we do know that the Solterra will likely arrive here in early 2026, with the Trailseeker following later that year.

The Trailseeker is Subaru's second electric SUV after the Solterra, and it comes with a boxier shape and a new-look front end. It's some 16cm longer than the Solterra and sports a set of (non-functional) skid plates sit fore and aft, with roof rails and lots of black plastic cladding to give it a rugged look. It'll ride on alloy wheels between 18 inches and 20 inches in size, depending on the spec.

The Solterra shares the new front-end look with the Trailseeker, which means redesigned headlights, a new front bumper and new wheels – again, 18 or 20 inches in size depending on spec.

Inside, the headline feature in both cars is a 14-inch touchscreen, which is the largest found in any Subaru to date and icnludes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Standard features include wireless 15W phone chargers for both driver and passenger, and high-powered USB-C charge points to keep other devices topped up.

Both cars get Subaru's EyeSight suite of safety systems, which includes automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control.

The Trailseeker's infotainment screen is the largest ever seen in a Subaru.

The new Trailseeker and revised Solterra share a new 77kWh battery pack, which gives a range of more than 260 miles in the Trailseeker and up to 289 miles in the Solterra. Both cars have dual motors driving all four wheels, with a total of 375PS in the Trailseeker and 343PS in the Solterra. That should ensure both cars have very brisk acceleration.
