Volvo's new electric EX30 Cross Country starts at £47,060

Volvo's new EX30 Cross Country, a more rugged, off-road focused version of its small electric SUV, is now on sale.

The £47,060 EX30 Cross Country is the first electric car to wear Volvo's long-established Cross Country badge. It's based on the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version of the standard EX30, but has a higher ground clearance, larger wheels and the option of an all-terrain tyre setup. That should make it fairly capable in the rough stuff, while keeping all the regular premium-car attractions of the EX30.

You can order a Volvo EX30 Cross Country now, with prices startiong at £47,060. That represents a small premium over the standard high-spec, dual-motor EX30, which costs just under £45,000.

Take a standard EX30 and off-roadify it. That's apparently been the brief for the Volvo engineers, who's taken the standard car, raised the ride height up by 19mm and added skidplates to the front and back, as well as matt-black wheel-arch extensions over the 19-inch wheels, for a more rugged look. On the front of the car is a piece of artwork showing the topography of the Kebnekaise mountain range in Sweden, which Volvo says inspired its designers.

Inside, the EX30 Cross Country has much of the original equipment from the standard car, but with some tweaks. The speakers have been removed from the doors (replaced by a soundbar on the dash) to make way for large storage compartments. In fact, there's lots of storage – a tunnel between the driver and passenger that can be slid out as a cupholder, and another compartment on the floor. In the back, there's a removable, washable storage box that slides out from beneath the central tunnel.

Infotainment-wise, the touchscreen system has various Google functionalities built-in, and as with every Volvo there are myriad safety systems.

The new Volvo EX30 Cross Country uses a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup with more than 400PS and a very fast 3.7-second sprint from standstill to 62mph. A range of up to 265 miles is possible on a single battery charge. Volvo says the 69kWh battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in 26 minutes, using a suitable fast charger.
