Toyota has pulled back the covers on its new Urban Cruiser, a small electric SUV that will arrive in the UK in the second half of 2025.
A rival for cars like the Kia EV3, Hyundai Kona Electric, Volvo EX30 and many more small electric SUVs, the Toyota Urban Cruiser has two battery options. Exact range details have yet to be announced, but as the Urban Cruiser shares its mechanical bits with the Suzuki e Vitara, we'd expect a similar range of up to 248 miles on a full charge.
It's slightly larger than a Toyota Yaris Cross, which should give the Urban Cruiser reasonable interior space for this size of car. Toyota will give the car its first airing at the Brussels Motor Show in January.
New 2025 Toyota Urban Cruiser: price and release date
The new Toyota Urban Cruiser is due to arrive in the UK in the third quarter of 2025. No pricing information has yet been revealed, but we'd expect it to be competitive against its rivals, so a starting price in the region of £32,000 seems likely.
New 2025 Toyota Urban Cruiser: exterior and interior
The Toyota Urban Cruiser has a 2700mm wheelbase, which is 140mm longer than the Yaris Cross and should give decent room inside for passengers and luggage. A bold front-end look (which Toyota calls the "hammerhead", and a lightbar across the rear of the car are the eyecatching features, and it rides on 18-inch or 19-inch wheels depending on the spec chosen.
The car measures 4285mm in length, is 1800mm with and 1640mm high. Toyta promises a range of exterior colours, including bi-tone options with a contrasting black roof.
Inside, space and versatility are promised, with a sliding rear seat system and the ability to fold in a 40:20:40 split to prioritise passengers or luggage. A high driving position and a low instrument panel should give lots of visibility. A 10.25-inch digital driver display is merged with a 10.1-inch infotainment screen, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included.
Safety systems will include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert and lane-keep assist systems, as well as a 360-degree camera system for manoeuvring.
New 2025 Toyota Urban Cruiser: motors and batteries
Three configurations of the Toyota Urban Cruiser will be available, in a combination of battery sizes, power outputs, and front-wheel-drive (FWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) models.
Two batteries will be available: a 49kWh unit available with a 144PS electric motor and FWD, and a 61kW battery that comes with a 174PS motor with FWD, or a dual-motor 184PS AWD option with a 65PS motor on the rear axle. Torque on the FWD models is 189Nm, but that's boosted to 300Nm on the AWD model.
All models get a heat pump as standard. Official battery ranges have yet to be announced.
