2025 MG IM5 and IM6

MG has drawn back the covers on two new electric executive cars that could prove value-for-money Tesla rivals.

The MG IM5 saoon and the MG IM6 SUV have up to 751PS of power and ranges of up to 441 miles from a fast-charging 100kWh battery. That means sub-four-second 0-62mph times.

The IM5 is also available with a 75kWh battery and a 295PS drivetrain.  Both models start at less than £50,000.

When they arrive later this year, the pair of MGs could be compelling rivals to the likes of the Tesla Model 3 and the Model Y.

There are three models of each car to choose from, and they're due to go on sale later this month, with the first deliveries due around September.

The MG IM5 starts at £39,450 for the 75kWh Standard Range model, while the Long Range model with the 100kWh battery costs from £44,995. The Performance model starts at £48,495.

If you prefer the SUV, then the MG IM6 is only available with the 100kWh battery. The entry-level model is called the Long Range and starts at £47,995, while the Performance model is £50,995. There's also the Launch Edition, with an advanced air suspenision system, for £52,995.

New 2025 MG IM5 & IM6: exterior and interior

Both the MG IM5 and MG IM6 share a design language, with the bodystyles as the main differentiator. The IM5 is a sleek executive saloon while the IM6 has a larger SUV body. Both feature frameless doors with a power release function, and flush door hands to improve aerodynamics. They both also feature a panoramic glass roof with double-glazed, thermal-insulating glass. LED lights are standard front and back, as are alloy wheels up to 21 inches in size, and an active front grille that again improves aero performance.

Inside, both cars are almost identical in design and features. MG promises a premium interior with a minimalist, high-tech layout. The seats use synthetic leather and the double-layer window glass is laminted for noise reduction. There's a 256-colour ambient lighting system to set your preferred mood.

The driver's seat adjusts electrically in 12 ways and gets a massage function, while the front passenger's moves in six different ways. Both front seats are heated and ventilated, and the rear seats are heated too.

The infotainment system is something of a screen-fest, with a 26.3-inch infotainment and driver's display stetching across half of the car, and a 10.5-inch central touchscreen, too. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard and navigation is included. A 20-speaker sound system is standard, including ceiling mounted speakers. Two-zone automatic control is standard, as is a hands-free powered boot lid and keyless entry.

The IM5 has a 457-litre boot that expands to 1290 litres when the rear seatbacks, which are split 60:40, are folded down. The IM6's boot measures 665 litres seats up and 1640 litres seats down., and there's a 32-litre "frunk" under the bonnet, too (the IM5's frunk measures 18 litres).

New 2025 MG IM5 & IM6: motors and batteries

The MG IM5 has two battery choices, while the IM6b makes do with one. Both come with a choice of electric motors at different power outputs and prices.

Starting with the IM5, the entry-levelm rear-wheel-drive (RWD) Standard Range model has a 75kWh battery and a 295PS electric motor with 450Nm of torque. This gives it a 0-62mph time of 6.8 seconds and a range of around 304 miles on a full battery.

Upgrade to the Long Range model and you'll get the 100kWh battery with a more powerful 408PS/500Nm single motor, bringing the acceleration time down to 4.6 seconds and the range up to 407 miles.

The dual-motor Performance model drives all four wheels with a combined 751PS and 802Nm, for a 0-62mph time of 3.2 seconds and a range of up to 357 miles.

The IM6 range starts with the single-motor, RWD model with 408PS, and reaches 62mph in 5.4 seconds with a range of 345 miles. The Performance model (and the near-identical Launch Edition) use the 751PS dual-motor AWD setup for a 3.5-second sprint to 62mph and a range of up to 345 miles.

New 2025 MG IM5 & IM6: trim levels

The IM5 comes in three flavours – Standard Range, Long Range and Performance – but the equipment levels are almost identical. There is no difference at all between the Standard Range and Long Range, with both riding on 19-inch wheels. The Performance model gets a snow driving mode to take advantage of its all-wheel drive, and rides on 20-inch wheels.

It's a similar story in the IM6, where the Standard Range car has 20-inch wheels, the Performance model has 21-inch wheels and the Launch Edition gets air suspension. Otherwise, all models get the features mentioned above.
