Audi has added a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option to the Q5 and Q5 Sportback ranges.

The new Audi Q5 E-hybrid Quattro, as it'll be badged, is powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor that's mounted to the gearbox. Combined, that delivers 299PS to all four wheels and promises a range of up to 62 miles on battery power alone, thanks to its 25.9kWh (20.7kWh net) battery.

The PHEV system is the same as that found in the latest Audi A5 and Audi A6 ranges, and will be available in both the regular Q5 SUV and the more rakish Q5 Sportback models. Both versions will be built at Audi's facility in San Jose Chiapa in Mexico.

The new model comes as standard with S sports suspension and 19-inch alloy wheels. The introduction of the battery does affect boot space compared to the standard Q5 – it drops from 520 litres to 438 in the Q5 SUV, and from 515 litres to 433 in the Q5 Sportback.

The new Audi Q5 E-hybrid comes only in Quattro all-wheel-drive form, with a 299PS PHEV system (comprising a 2.0-litre petrol engine and a 25.9kWh battery) and a claimed electric-only range of up to 62 miles. The 0-62mph sprint takes 6.2 seconds.

The system features an 11kW on-board charger, which means you can fill the battery from empty in 2.5 hours at a suitable charging station. The PHEV system will allow you to drive in EV mode or in Hybrid mode, the latter of which lets you set a desired battery charge level to save for later if required.
