New 2024 MINI Cooper Electric: Price, specs and release date

Written By Richard Aucock

New 2024 MINI Cooper Electric

An all-new MINI Cooper Electric will arrive in 2024, heralding a complete overhaul for the famous British small car.

Controversially, the new 2024 MINI Cooper Electric, to be sold purely in 3-door guise, will not be built in Britain, but in China – with parent company BMW promising it will be the most high-tech and able MINI ever sold.

The new MINI range is now focused around Cooper variants, with the old MINI One being phased out. This means the new model is officially called MINI Cooper Electric.

The new 2024 MINI Cooper Electric will be complemented by a range of petrol-powered and all-new MINI 3-door, MINI 5-door and MINI Convertible models. These will still be made at the firm’s famous Oxford factory in the UK. They will share a modern new look, set to be previewed by the 2024 MINI Cooper Electric.

An all-new MINI Countryman family SUV is also part of the plan – along with a more compact electric SUV inspired by the MINI Aceman concept car.

The new 2024 MINI Cooper Electric has been fully revealed at the Munich Motor Show. Customer deliveries are set to begin in spring 2024. Those looking to buy or lease the new MINI Cooper Electric are being invited to register on the firm's website ahead of ordering opening in October 2023.

The current MINI Electric costs from £29,000 – and new MINI Cooper Electric prices impressively start from £30,000, for the MINI Cooper Electric E. There will be a choice of three trim levels, either Classic, Exclusive or Sport.

There is also a new MINI Cooper Electric SE, with more power and a larger battery, which costs from £34,500. This will also offer the same choice of three trim levels.

New 2024 MINI Cooper Electric: exterior and interior

The new MINI Cooper Electric has a modern, purist design that blends the classic MINI DNA with cleaner, simpler design cues. Bosses call it the ‘Charismatic Simplicity’ approach.

Classic features on the new MINI Cooper Electric include the long wheelbase, short overhangs and short bonnet. The new model has larger wheels, and all the exterior chrome elements and the wheelarch extensions have been removed, for a fresher appearance. There are also flush-fit doorhandles.

Large round headlights are a distinctive feature on the new MINI Cooper Electric. They offer three unique LED light signatures for the first time. All light modes have a special welcome and goodbye orchestrated animation.

At the rear, the new MINI Cooper Electric has new-look triangular-style rear lamps. The flush-fit LED units can be switched to different modes. The rear shoulder section on the new MINI Cooper Electric has been emphasised, and a bold black bootlid handle carries ‘Cooper’ lettering as well as the MINI logo.

New MINI Cooper Electric Classic trim has a reductive exterior look with key elements finished in Vibrant Silver. It’s available in four paint colours including new Sunny Side Yellow, one contrasting roof colour and two wheel options.

New MINI Cooper Electric Exclusive trim adds a multitone roof with a combination of three different colours. The front grille is finished in Vibrant Silver.

New MINI Cooper Electric Sport has a high-gloss black front grille and logos, with contrast Chili Red roof and red and black bonnet stripes available.

Inside, the new MINI Cooper Electric has a much more minimalist look, designed around an all-new round instrument cluster and lower toggle bar. The dashboard itself has been paired back and, for the first time, has a textile surface.

The new MINI Cooper Electric has the world’s first OLED display. The ground screen has a 240mm diameter and runs the latest MINI Operating System 9. The stunningly crisp and vivid display features vehicle-related information in the upper half, and navigation, media, phone and climate in the lower half. It has full touch and swipe functionality, and a ‘Hey MINI’ voice assistant.

The toggle bar houses the gear selector, parking brake, start/stop key, ‘experience mode’ toggle and volume control. The new MINI Cooper Electric also has an optional head-up display.

Each model has a different appearance. The new MINI Cooper Electric Classic has 2D knitted textile trim, and black sports seats in synthetic leather.

The new MINI Cooper Electric Exclusive has a two-tone houndstooth pattern for the knitted textile dashboard, available in two colours. It has perforated Vescin sports seats and the option of a new Spray-Tech roof.

The new MINI Cooper Electric Sport combines multi-colour knitted textile and black synthetic leather with red stitching. A panoramic glass roof is also available.

The new MINI Cooper Electric seats four people, with a 60:40 split rear seat. This grows the boot from 200 litres to 800 litres, both figures that are up on today’s model. There is also an additional underfloor storage area in the boot.

New 2024 MINI Cooper Electric: engines and gearboxes

The new MINI Cooper Electric has an all-new, all-electric powertrain. There are two variants, called E and SE, both driving the front wheels, with a battery mounted beneath the floor for best space efficiency.

The new MINI Cooper Electric E has a 184ps electric motor, which gives 0-62mph performance in 7.3 seconds. It has a top speed of 99mph. A 40.7kWh battery gives an electric range of 190 miles. It offers DC rapid charging at speeds of up to 75kW.

The new MINI Cooper Electric SE has a 218ps electric motor, for 0-62mph performance in 6.7 seconds. It has a higher top speed of 106mph. A larger 54.2kWh battery gives an electric range of 250 miles. It has 95kW DC rapid charging.

Both are significant improvements over the current MINI Electric, which has a range of just 145 miles.

The new MINI Cooper Electric will offer fun handling that’s improved by wider tracks and a longer wheelbase, giving a more planted stance on the road. The suspension has been improved, as have the brakes, and a low centre of gravity makes it precise and agile in corners.

There are several MINI Experience drive modes, including a novel Go-Kart Mode. These help owners configure the steering response, traction control and other elements. Meanwhile, a Green Mode optimises the electric efficiency and energy recouperation for maximum range.

Find a used MINI Electric for sale

The current MINI Electric was launched in 2020. It is a desirable and fun-to-drive car, which is helping keep used car prices strong. You’ll need to budget around £26,000 for a 2020 MINI Electric Cooper S Level 1, although that should guarantee a model with very low miles. You rarely see these cars with more than 10,000 miles on the clock.

Another retro recreation is due to go electric in the next couple of years; here at heycar, we recently revealed everything you need to know about the new 2025 Renault 4. We’ve also covered the new electric Volvo EX90 luxury SUV – and for those not ready to go electric, we’ve revealed all the fast facts about the new BMW M2 coupe.

MINI says there are six new models in development: the MINI Cooper Electric 3-door, new versions of the petrol-powered MINI Cooper 3-door, Mini Cooper 5-door and MINI Convertible, plus a larger MINI Countryman SUV and a smaller electric crossover. The latter will be based on the MINI Aceman concept car.

It might be electric, but MINI insists the go-kart feeling will remain, for ‘a maximum of emotions combined with a minimal footprint’.

The new MINI Cooper Electric 3-door will be the first of the all-new MINI family to go on sale, the company has said. It arrives on UK roads in spring 2024.
