The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe is an elegant, two-door variant of the Mercedes E-Class saloon, designed for drivers looking for an extra touch of style and sportiness in their luxury car.
The latest version of the E-Class Coupe is based on the previous-generation of E-Class and was sold new from 2017 to 2023, with a refresh in 2020 that updated the style, engines and tech. It’s a rival for the smaller Audi A5 Coupe and the BMW 6 Series, as well as the similarly sized four-door Audi A7.
The Mercedes E-Class saloon is a fine car, but some customers are looking for something a little more stylish and with a sportier driving experience. That’s where the E-Class Coupe comes in. It gets rid of the rear side doors for a sleeker look and the engineers have added some extra engagement to the driving experience. However, they’ve maintained the comfort and luxury of the saloon, as well as the cutting edge technology. And because of the size of the E-Class, there’s a fair amount of practicality retained, too.
If your focus is on outright driving engagement, the E-Class Coupe won’t feel quite so agile and fun as the BMW 6 Series, but it’s nimbler than an Audi A7 and strikes a great balance between comfort and performance – in our review, we called it “the Goldilocks model”. It’s a car best suited to cruising, but it can thread along a country road at pace very nicely. Lower-spec cars feature traditional sprung suspension, while higher-end models get air suspension for a more cushioned ride. Rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models are available.
Inside, you get a really sumptuous cabin with electric adjustment of just about everything on all models. The infotainment system is slick and easy to use, and the levels of space are impressive for a car of this type. Four adults should be very comfortable even on long journeys, and the boot is a good size, too. As you go up the trim levels and options, a wealth of luxurious extras are available, but even the base model car is well equipped.
The engine line-up consists of a range of diesel and petrol engines, from the relatively efficient to the seriously powerful. All are attached to a nine-speed automatic gearbox.

What Mercedes E-Class Coupe engine will best suit you depends on what you want from it. The entry-level diesel – the E220d – is a very popular choice because it offers enough power for everyday use with very good fuel economy, especially for those doing lots of long journeys. More powerful diesels are available and the petrol engines also have plenty of power, but the fuel economy will be less impressive. For driver engagement, the petrol engines have more character, especially the AMG performance model, the E 53. Cars from 2020 were fitted with mild-hybrid systems for improved fuel efficiency.
Trim-wise, the choice is fairly simple. All models are based on the AMG Line trim, which is well equipped as standard, and add extra features as you climb the trim ladder. We reckon the standard AMG Line will suit most people, but if you want extra toys then look out for AMG Line Premium (which was the base model from 2020), AMG Premium Plus or the AMG Line Night edition.

The cost for Vehicle Excise Duty (car tax) on a Mercedes E-Class Coupe will depend on when it was first registered, as the tax rules changed in April 2017. All models registered from then cost more than £40,000 (including options) when new, which means they attract a luxury car surcharge on the annual tax figure. The means a total annual cost of £600 until six years after first registration. After that they’ll revert to the regular £190 flat rate.
Models registered before 1 April, 2017 (and there aren’t many of them) are subject to different VED rules, and the annual tax you’ll pay will depend on CO2 emissions. For a select few E220d models, this could be as low as £35. Others will be as much as £385.
As a premium and relatively sporty car, insurance for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe won’t be particularly cheap. The most affordable models start at insurance group 35 of 50, but the more powerful models will be higher. The top-spec E53 AMG models sit in groups 44 and 45.
