The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, also called the G-Wagon, is a design and wealth statement that still turns heads no matter the age or style of this unique SUV. The current generation model runs from 2018 to now but the level before, from 2010 to 2018, is also capable and still well sought after in the used car market. Of course you can go all the way back to its first model launch in 1979, if you want a really classic example.
This guide aims to focus on the more modern examples of the last two generations. Since this is one of the longest produced vehicles in Daimler's history, focusing on every single one would get too complicated and end up reading more like a history lesson.
Originally launched as a military vehicle, and still being made for that purpose too, this SUV holds the strong and aggressive looks that make it stand out as a utility vehicle. Yet that is combined with the refined design and luxury that Mercedes can offer.
There are several engine options including a 3.0-litre diesel and a supercharged 5.4-litre petrol in the AMG format. While trim levels aren't really a thing, there are lots of optional extras so expect a wide variety of types to be found in the used market.
Don't expect this to handle tarmac roads brilliantly, as it's built with agricultural land passage in mind, so if you want an off-roader that can do roads too, this could be ideal. Key rivals for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class include the legendary Land Rover Discovery, a sportier Porsche Cayenne, and the more humble Toyota Land Cruiser.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a strong and capable off-road vehicle which has become fashionable and can be seen as much in cities as out in the countryside.
This is surprisingly luxurious inside. Not because it's Mercedes, you'd expect luxury from the manufacturer, but more because this is a rough-and-tough vehicle – yet still offers refinements and comforts inside.
This is noisy and brash but it can manage to get through 600mm of standing water, offer steep approach angles, has three differential locks for superb traction no matter the terrain, plus there's a low range transfer case for the seven-speed gearbox – all making it one of the best off-road vehicles you can buy.
Get onto the road and the steering wheel requires plenty of turning work, the engine is loud and the cornering is wobbly. But then this isn't built to win any tarmac based races. Although that height and upright driving position make for comfort and a feeling of safety on most roads.
Expect lots of quality leather for the interior with a large tablet style infotainment system in models after 2012. Options like privacy glass, a Harman & Kardon audio system and heated front seats are all part of what help to make this feel luxury.
There are several engine options including the AMG G63 twin-turbo V8 that offers a powerful 577 BHP, or go for a more economical pick with the G350d that uses a 3.0-litre diesel for 282 BHP.
There are no traditional trim options to pick from, just varying engine types and then all the extras that may or may not have been added.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a super safe feeling vehicle not only because of that ride height but the reassurance that this is a military grade vehicle which certainly can set your mind at ease should you be worried about a crash. Plus you have plenty of power should you want to pull a trailer – even off-road.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class comes in several engine types with lots of extras available but generally the luxury level is high, as standard. Technically there are trim variations across three names, but they have all the same kit just different engines.
As standard, in newer models, you can expect to have a four-year or 50,000 mile warranty, blind spot monitoring, surround view camera, adaptive cruise, remote engine start, parking sensors, multi-zone climate controls and premium audio.
In older versions you still get lots of leather, large alloys, LED headlights, ambient lighting, heated front seats in some cases, multi-zone climate controls and electric sunroof options. Plus there's adaptive suspension to make the ride comfortable no matter the road, or lack of.
The current Mercedes-Benz G-Class has no trim levels but offers most luxuries as standard with options to add more as required.
