Used Mercedes-Benz B-Class for sale: everything you need to know

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is a compact SUV that is really spacious and practical. There’s much to like about people carriers – and the B-Class is a great option. If you are considering a used new one, you will find everything you need to know here, including a full account of the current model line-up.

There are also plenty of used Mercedes-Benz B-Class models available to buy. While you’re here, why not check out the selection of cars we have in stock?

Should you buy a Mercedes B-Class?

MPVs are all about space and practicality, and the B-Class scores very well on those fronts. It’s quite a tall car, so even people well over six feet should be able to get comfortable in the front and back. Children are unlikely to have any complaints about space in the back either; two rear-facing child seats are easily installed on the Isofix mounts. Big windows let in plenty of light and give a good view out, so it’s a nice car to travel in.

There are other MPVs this size that offer a bigger boot, but you still get considerably more load capacity than in most medium-sized hatchbacks – you won’t have to worry about packing light for a family holiday. The back seats fold down if you need even more space.

The B-Class’s compact size means it’s easy to drive around town and is also a fine long-distance cruiser, especially as an automatic gearbox is fitted as standard. It comes with some impressive technology, too. There are four trim levels, plus two petrol and two diesel engines to choose from. Any of the combinations will get you a well-equipped, fuel-efficient car.

Running costs are low, especially if you go for the diesel engine, which can manage well over 50mpg. Mercedes-Benz cars are usually very reliable and solidly put together, so the B-Class should be largely trouble-free to own.

The B-Class’s main rivals are the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and Volkswagen Touran. They all have similar passenger and boot space, so the choice may come down to which one you prefer the look and feel of. If you like the B-Class most, you’re unlikely to be disappointed.

A Mercedes-Benz B-Class not for you? We've got 1000s of used cars for sale to suit all budgets and needs.

What's the best used Mercedes-Benz B-Class to buy?

Mercedes-Benz model badges make no mention of engine size any more. The B180 isn’t a 1.8-litre motor: it’s actually a 1.3-litre turbo. The B200 is a higher-powered 1.3-litre, while the B180d is a 1.5-litre diesel. The B250, B200d and B220d are 2.0-litre engines.

Don’t worry. The turbocharged motors have surprising power, and the B180 offers perfectly reasonably pace. We’d happily drive one, and even find the regular Sport trim more than acceptable. AMG Line spec looks sportier, but that’s arguably irrelevant for an MPV. Meanwhile, if you want more kit you can get the Executive upgrade pack on Sport, and Executive, Premium or Premium Plus packs on AMG Line (it’s less confusing than it sounds).

As of 2022, the B-Class engine range was slimmed down - this is increasingly becoming the case due to ongoing supply issues and brands 'rightsizing' ranges. Only the B200 and B200d engines were now available - thankfully they're probably the best all-rounders anyway.

Used Mercedes B-Class fuel economy and performance

The range of engines available in the B-Class was reduced in 2022, down to one petrol and one diesel. In both cases, Mercedes chose to continue with the more powerful options, which sold in greater numbers anyway. Both engines offer similar performance and produce similar CO2 emissions, but the diesel posts higher fuel economy figures. It could be the better option if you cover a lot of miles.

  • Mercedes B180 petrol – This started as the door to the B-Class engine line-up. It has 136PS and drives through a seven-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox. Fuel economy was officially quoted at 52.2mpg and Co2 emission comes in between 124- and 128g/km.
  • Mercedes B200 petrol – This model has a 1.3-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 163PS. A seven-speed dual-clutch DCT automatic gearbox is fitted as standard. Zero to 62mph takes 8.2 seconds and CO2 emissions are as low as 139g/km.
  • Mercedes B250 petrol – A slow seller when new, so a rare sight on the used market, the B250 has a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine creating 224PS. This gives 0-62mph in a swift 6.4 seconds. However, fuel economy of 39.8mpg and 162g/km Co2 emissions will rein in many buyers' enthusiasm.
  • Mercedes B200d diesel – The diesel engines have an eight-speed automatic gearbox rather than the seven-speeder of the petrols. With this lower power 150PS 1.5 litre engine, it means emissions as low as 112g/km and up to 67.1mpg.
  • Mercedes B220d diesel – The diesel is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 150PS. It comes with an eight-speed dual-clutch DCT auto gearbox. The dash to 62mph takes 8.3 seconds and CO2 emissions can be as low as 133g/km, depending on which model you go for.
  • Mercedes B250e PHEV hybrid – The B250e comes with a 1.3-litre petrol engine and electric motor assistance. Together, this provides 218PS to deliver 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds along with 25g/km and up to 42 miles on EV power, It also has a claimed combined economy 235.4mpg.

What used Mercedes B-Class trim levels are available?

The B-Class is available with a number of trim levels that act as a starting point. Different packages of extra features could be added when the car was bought new. The Sport and AMG Line trims come very well equipped anyway, but the extra features you get with the packages could be genuinely useful to you. The current B-Class has been on sale since 2019.

  • Mercedes B-Class Sport – The entry step on the B-Class model ladder, this model has heated front seats, LED headlamps, dual-zone climate control and keyless starting.
  • Mercedes B-Class Sport Executive – Mercedes now includes the previously optional Executive package with the Sport trim level as standard. Highlights among the features include a 10.25-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, sat-nav, leather upholstery, heated front seats and two-zone climate control.
  • Mercedes B-Class AMG Line Executive – Like the Sport, Mercedes throws in the Executive package with this AMG Line trim level. You can easily tell it apart from the Sport by its AMG wheels, sporty-looking bodykit and sports seats upholstered in Artico leather and Dinamica microfibre cloth.
  • Mercedes B-Class AMG Line Premium – On top of the features you get with the AMG Line Executive, the Premium package adds keyless entry and, somewhat curiously, pre-installation for a towbar.
  • Mercedes B-Class AMG Line Premium Plus Night Edition – The top-of-the-range B-Class gets all the features previously mentioned, plus Multibeam LED headlights, an opening panoramic glass sunroof and a package of gloss black styling details.

Used Mercedes-Benz B-Class dimensions and boot size

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class’s exterior dimensions are:

  • Length: 4417mm
  • Width: 1796mm
  • Height: 1562mm

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class’s boot capacity is:

  • Rear seats up: 455 litres (B200); 445 litres (B220d)
  • Rear seats folded down: 1540 litres (B200); 1530 litres (B220d)

Used Mercedes-Benz B-Class road tax

As an alternative fuel vehicle, the Mercedes B250e plug-in hybrid qualifies for a discount on its road tax, so it pays £170 per year for 12 months of duty. All the others in the B-Class range will cost you the standard, at the time of writing, £180 per year.

How much is it to insure a Mercedes-Benz B-Class?

The B-Class is rated in insurance groups 22 to 26, roughly in the middle of the 1-50 scale. It might cost more to insure than some other mid-size MPVs, but not by a huge amount.
