Used BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo for sale: everything you need to know

Sold in the UK from 2017 until 2020, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is a true niche vehicle, treading on the toes of the BMW 5 Series, 7 Series, X6 SUV, and even the 6 Series Gran Coupe, but doing things a little differently from all of them.

It’s essentially a luxury car for those who want the utility of a hatchback, and a BMW for those who want something that prioritises comfort over agility. Unsurprisingly, it’s not a common sight on the used market, but if you’re reading this page, it might well be the car for you.

Other cars to consider include the Audi A7 Sportback, Mercedes-Benz CLS, and Jaguar XJ, while the 6 Series Gran Coupe is a sleeker take on the formula if you don’t need the Gran Turismo’s space, and the Tesla Model S plays a similar role but is exclusively electric.

Should you buy a BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo?

The 6 Series Gran Turismo certainly isn’t for everyone. Its taller stature and domed roofline aren’t as sporty or elegant as the other 6 Series models, and aren’t as traditional as the similar 5 Series or 7 Series. It’s also not as agile as several of the aforementioned BMWs, nor its rivals, which is unusual for a BMW.

But for a small percentage of you out there, it could be just about perfect - that unusual shape means it’s very spacious inside and has an enormous boot, the hatchback making it much more practical than any saloon or coupe. If the greatest luxury is space, then the 6 Series Gran Turismo really is luxurious.

That’s backed up by an excellent driving position and plenty of toys too, with an infotainment system that still works well even compared to those in newer cars. Refinement is another plus point - all the engines are hushed and there’s not much in the way of wind, suspension, or road noise either.

A choice of petrol and diesel engines and two trim levels (one more luxurious, the other with a sporty side) give used buyers plenty of options, and depreciation has taken the sting out of what was once quite a hefty price tag. Pay attention to service history though, as reliability can be mixed.

The Audi A7 Sportback is the closest 6 Series Gran Turismo rival in spirit, as another large five-door fastback, and you might consider the Tesla Model S too, if electric power isn’t an issue. The Mercedes-Benz CLS and Jaguar XJ use a traditional saloon boot but both have sleek profiles and luxurious cabins.

A BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo not for you? We've got 1000s of used cars for sale to suit all budgets and needs.

What’s the best used BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo model to buy?

We reckon SE specification might be the pick of the range. Given you’re more likely to shop for a regular 6 Series coupe or Gran Coupe if you’re of the sporting persuasion, opting for the less sporty, more comfortable trim makes sense on the larger, more spacious Gran Turismo. For this reason we’d also go for the 630d over the petrol versions - it’s not as musical as the 640i inline six, but its strong performance and decent economy both suit the nature of the car.

Used BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo fuel economy and performance

  • BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo 630i: The 2-litre turbocharged inline four in the 630i produced 258PS, getting from 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds. Combined economy was up to 34.9mpg in SE trim.
  • BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo 640i xDrive: 640i models got a turbocharged 3-litre inline six, and came with all-wheel drive as standard. 0-62mph took 5.2 seconds, and returned 31.4mpg combined economy.
  • BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo 620d: With a 2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel, the 620d returned up to 46.3mpg combined, with a 7.9-second 0-62mph time.
  • BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo 620d xDrive: xDrive variants got the same 2-litre turbodiesel, with the 0-62mph time one tenth slower than the rear-drive version and economy dropping slightly to 44.8mpg.
  • BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo 630d: The 3-litre inline six diesel developed 265PS, with a 0-62mph time of 6.1 seconds and combined consumption of 43.5mpg.
  • BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo 630d xDrive: Also offered with all-wheel drive, the 630d was slightly quicker with extra traction, with a 6-second 0-62mph time. Economy was up to 40.9mpg.

What used BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo trim levels are available?

There were just two trim levels available on the 6 Series Gran Turismo, reflecting the choice most buyers were likely to take: either a more comfortable and luxurious SE model, or a more dynamic M Sport specification. There’s plenty of equipment in both, with the M Sport largely differentiated by its sporty visual addenda and upgraded brakes and suspension.

  • The BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo SE came with 18-inch alloy wheels, two-zone air conditioning, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, adaptive LED headlights, cruise control with a braking function, twin exhaust tailpipes, chrome exterior trim, aluminium interior trim elements, front and rear parking sensors, auto lights and wipers, a reversing camera, heated front seats, and a power tailgate.
  • The BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo M Sport stepped up to 19-inch alloys, M exterior styling, dark gloss exterior trim, a Sensatec artificial leather dashboard covering, M pedals and steering wheel, M Sport suspension and brakes, sports seats, and a panoramic glass roof.

Used BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo dimensions and boot size

The BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo’s dimensions are:

  • Length: 5091mm
  • Width: 1902mm (without mirrors)
  • Height: 1538mm

The BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo’s boot size is:

  • 610 litres
  • 1800 litres with the rear seats folded (to roof)

Used BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo road tax

Relatively high prices mean the 6 Series Gran Turismo attracts a VED surcharge in its second to sixth years of registration. This currently means tax of £570 a year, though due to the car’s age, some earlier variants will already be dropping to a lower £180 annual rate.

How much is it to insure a BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo?

For a luxury car, expect luxury insurance premiums. 620d models in SE trim begin in group 40, which rises to group 41 for the 630i petrol versions. Six-cylinder diesels can be found in groups 43 and 44, while the 640i in both SE and M Sport trim sits in the maximum group 50. This is par for the class though - a Mercedes CLS goes from group 47 to 50.
