The third-generation new Volkswagen Tiguan is a new version of VW’s best-selling car, and aims to blend updated styling with an all-new interior that’s packed with the latest touchscreen tech.
The new Volkswagen Tiguan is more advanced beneath the surface too, with updated petrol and diesel engines offered alongside a plug-in hybrid with a pure electric range of around 62 miles – and the ability to use public DC rapid chargers.
The new Volkswagen Tiguan will take on a broad range of rivals including the Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Ford Kuga, Nissan Qashqai, Peugeot 3008, SEAT Ateca and Skoda Karoq. New car buyers in this sector can also choose from the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and Renault Austral.
Here’s what you need to know about 2024’s new Volkswagen Tiguan.
The new Volkswagen Tiguan is now open for ordering. Its UK launch is scheduled for spring 2024.
New Volkswagen Tiguan prices start from £34,060. This is for the base model Tiguan 1.5 TSI 130 which, like all new Volkswagen Tiguan, comes with a DSG automatic gearbox as standard.
Other new Volkswagen Tiguan variants mirror other new VWs, with Life, Elegance and R-Line trims available. Prices for the new Volkswagen Tiguan 1.5 TSI 130 Life start from £35,905. The diesel-powered new Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TSI 150 costs from £37,905.
Prices for new Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid will follow in the spring, while powerful 2.0 TSI 204 and 2.0 TSI 265 models will arrive towards the end of 2024.
The new Volkswagen Tiguan has evolutionary styling that aims to offer a smoother, more modern appearance than the sharp lines of today’s car. It has a distinctive front end, with high-mounted headlines and a bold bumper – this has a contrast gloss black inset section on R-Line models.
The new Volkswagen Tiguan’s flat LED headlights are joined by a glass-covered horizontal strip, with the radiator grille openings now located at the outer sides of the bumper. HD headlights, called IQ. Light HD, are available for the first time. They feature 19,2000 multipixel LEDs per headlight.
The new Volkswagen Tiguan has a sleeker side profile, with more athletic rear shoulders that wrap around wheels up to 20-inches in diameter. The smoother appearance is backed up by a better drag coefficient, which drops from 0.33 to 0.28. There’s a horizonal LED light strip at the rear as well.
The big changes for the new Volkswagen Tiguan come inside. The dash design is all-new, and based around a Digital Cockpit setup. There’s a digital driver’s display and additional freestanding central touchscreen that measures up to 15.0 inches – and it uses an entirely new menu structure with clearer, more straightforward graphics. An optional head-up display is also available.
A novel feature in the new Volkswagen Tiguan is a central multifunction driving experience switch with integrated OLED display. This can be used to control the radio volume, driving profile and even the background ambient lighting colours. An IDA voice assistant offers natural language voice control.
The new Volkswagen Tiguan has more stowage space inside, aided by the relocation of the gear lever to the steering column. Turning it forward selects ‘D’, backwards engages ‘R’ and pressing the side selects ‘P’ (and automatically engages the parking brake. All new Volkswagen Tiguan have steering wheel gearshift paddles too.
In the front, the new Volkswagen Tiguan is available with comfortable ergoActive seats. These have a pneumatic 10-chamber pressure massage function. They can be programmed so the seat heating or seat ventilation is automatically activated at certain outside temperatures. They are standard on Elegance and R-Line trims.
The new Volkswagen Tiguan is around 30mm longer, which will boost rear-seat space. The boot is larger too, growing 37 litres to a very generous 652 litres. Overall height, width and wheelbase are the same as today’s car.
For those who find the new Volkswagen Tiguan a little too large to park, a clever Park Assist Pro with remote parking capability helps ease the strain. It allows automatic driving into and out of parking spaces controlled by the driver outside the vehicle, using a smartphone app.
The new Volkswagen Tiguan has a broad range of engines including TDI turbodiesel, TSI turbo petrol, eTSI mild hybrid petrol and eHybrid plug-in hybrid. All new Volkswagen Tiguan have a standard DSG automatic gearbox.
The entry-level new Volkswagen Tiguan has a 1.5-litre TSI engine with 150ps. It’s also available in eTSI guise, with a 48-volt mild hybrid system that acts as an electric booster and also allows the engine to be completely switched off for low-speed coasting. It silently restarts when the accelerator pedal is pressed.
The new Volkswagen Tiguan also offers a sporty 2.0-litre TSI petrol with 204ps in front-wheel drive guise, or 265ps in 4Motion all-wheel drive guise. Meanwhile, a 2.0-litre TDI turbodiesel has 150ps in front-wheel drive and 193ps in 4Motion all-wheel drive guise.
The flagship new Volkswagen Tiguan is the eHybrid plug-in hybrid. With a high-capacity 19.7kWh battery, it has a range of up to 62 miles. It’s also able to use 50kW rapid chargers for the first time, topping it up from 10% to 80% in just 25 minutes.
The new Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid is combined with the 1.5-litre TSI engine and a choice of two electric motors, for system power of either 204ps or 272ps.
The new Volkswagen Tiguan uses the VW MQB evo architecture. It’s available with adjustable DCC Pro adaptive dampers, and all models have a Vehicle Dynamics Manager to centralise its dynamic control functionality – the same system is also used on the sporty Volkswagen Golf GTI.
A comprehensive array of high-tech safety assist features in the new Volkswagen Tiguan include a driver alert system, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, a rear-view camera system and a clever feature that automatically brakes the car if it detects an oncoming vehicle when turning.
