The all-electric MG4 has taken the top prize in the 2023 UK Car of the Year Awards.

The MG4 took the overall title as well as the Best Family Car award, with judges praising its cost-conscious approach to EV motoring.

Second place was awarded to another budget offering in the shape of the seven-seat Dacia Jogger, while the Toyota GR86 took third overall as well as the award for Best Coupe.

“The MG4 proves that electric cars can be affordable, practical and appeal to all areas of the automotive market,” said John Challen, director of the UK Car of the Year Awards. “Fully charged, it offers more than enough miles for most journeys, while the design and driving dynamics tick two other important boxes for consumers. A deserved winner for the electric future.”

Chris Evans, head of sales at heycar UK – sponsor of the UK Car of the Year Awards, said: “Congratulations to MG for its very deserved win with the fantastic MG4. With an impressive range of up to 281 miles, coupled with striking styling and design, MG has struck an excellent balance of desirability, practicality and performance. With consumers facing economic pressures more than ever before, it also proves that EV ownership doesn’t have to be prohibitive. The MG4 represents fantastic value for money.”

The 27-strong panel of judges, made up of expert automotive journalists from across the media, praised the MG4 for its affordability, practicality, overall range and the quality of the driving experience and beat its closest rivals by a considerable margin.

Top Gear’s Tom Ford commented: “In a world where practical electric cars are all SUVs and priced to the sky, the MG4 offers genuine value-for-money. It brings EV ownership closer to reality for more people.”

Alisdair Suttie, also a UK Car of the Year Awards director, continued: “MG has come up with the perfect car for our times. With plenty of range and quick charging, it takes the chore out of EV ownership and makes it a desirable way to travel. It’s simply a fantastic all-round family car.”

Toyota’s Aygo X took the award in the Best City category alongside the Best Coupe award for its GR86 sibling, while the second-overall Dacia Jogger claimed the Best Family prize. Kia’s Niro was awarded Best Crossover, with the new Range Rover taking the gong for Best Large Crossover. The Lotus Emira received the coveted award for Best Performance.
