Volvo was one of the first brands to clad its estate cars in plastic and raise them on sturdier, off-road-biased suspension, and the V60 Cross Country offered from 2019 is the latest in that line.
Already one of the most handsome estates on the market, the Cross Country gives the V60 extra attitude and extra ability, without compromising its practicality or classy cabin. It doesn’t quite have the engine choice of some rivals and finding the right used model means hunting out options packs, but it’s a great all-rounder.
Other lifted estate cars to consider include the Audi A4 Allroad (and larger A6 Allroad, depending on your budget), Subaru Outback, Volkswagen Passat Alltrack, and Skoda Octavia Scout. Volvo of course offers several SUV models that cross paths with the Cross Country too, such as the XC60.
The Volvo V60 is already a solid estate car buy, but what if you want something capable of handling the occasional unmade road (such as the average British high street, in a few years), or simply something that stands out more than the regular low-key V60 look? That’s where the V60 Cross Country comes in.
With 60mm higher ride height than other V60s, the Cross Country effectively gives you the all-round ability of an SUV without the tall stature and bluff styling. It’s a look that has worked well on numerous Volvos over the years, and also serves as a high trim level in the V60 range, meaning plenty of standard equipment and the usual high levels of active and passive safety.
The driving experience isn’t actually that different to other V60s, for both good and bad. The ride quality isn’t as cushy as you might expect but the extra suspension travel does make lighter work of speed bumps, potholes, and gives you peace of mind if you do venture onto rougher roads, while the handling is similar to the regular V60, with only a little more body lean in corners. Engines have enough power, but all are four-cylinder, so not quite as smooth as the V6s in some alternatives.
The V60 errs more towards the stylish end of the estate market than the wardrobe-carrying one, so the 529-litre boot is spacious but not class-leading, but space in the front and back seats is more than up to the job, and the cabin oozes class - though it’s a shame Apple CarPlay and Android Auto weren’t standard in that portrait touchscreen, so not all used models will have them.
In terms of badge appeal, the V60 Cross Country’s main rival is the Audi A4 Allroad, which is just as desirable as the Volvo. They’re far from the only jacked-up estates around though - others to consider, depending on your badge preference, include the Subaru Outback, Volkswagen Passat Alltrack, and Skoda Octavia Scout. You can also get all-wheel drive versions of the BMW 3 Series Touring and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate, albeit not with raised suspension.

As the V60 Cross Country is itself a trim level, your choices here are between a couple of different engines, and then finding cars that have some of Volvo’s well-specified options packs loaded in. Of the engines, we’d opt for the diesel, which keeps running costs down and suits the character of the car. When it comes to option packs, the Driver Assist Pack might be welcome for those who cover a lot of motorway miles, since its functions are geared towards semi-autonomous driving.
Volvo has juggled a few different trim lines with the Cross Country, though broadly speaking the Cross Country is itself a variant of the V60 and comes with equipment to differentiate it from other models in the range. Most will come with the kit mentioned below, while when the car was new, Volvo offered a few option packs such as a Climate Pack with a heated windscreen, or a Tech Pack with an upgraded Bowers & Wilkins audio system, so look out for these and others on used models.

Depending on the year and specification, some V60 Cross Country models will cost £180 per year to tax at current rates. Models with a list price of more than £40,000 though attract a surcharge, which bumps the annual bill up to £570.
The V60 Cross Country comes in at insurance group 35, which splits the difference between the more affordable group 26 of the Audi A4 Allroad with a 2-litre diesel engine (group 26), and the Allroad fitted with the 3-litre V6 diesel, which is group 39.
