Used Volkswagen T-Cross for sale: everything you need to know

The Volkswagen T-Cross is an affordable smaller SUV that makes a good option if you’re looking for a practical and good to look at car, which is pretty economical to run.

In terms of range, the T-Cross sits just below the Volkswagen Taigo and T-Roc models, and in that respect it’s cheaper to run too. Granted, it faces stiff competition from the Ford Puma, the Skoda Kamiq and the Nissan Juke to name but three, but it’s got plenty going for it.

You can think of Volkswagen T-Cross as a small crossover variant of the Volkswagen Polo, which therefore makes it pretty economica to run. In fact, pick a used model and you’ll get to have fun from the 1-litre TSI engine, which cames in two variants, both of which are impressive. There’s a 1.6-diesel if optimal fuel economy is preferred.

Twin that with lots of practicality and an interior that is largely comfortable and comes with all of the everyday features you’ll want and the Volkswagen T-Cross makes a lot of sense.

If you’re looking for an affordable used buy, there’s a huge amount of choice. Take a look at a Volkswagen T-Cross for sale on heycar to discover just what’s on offer.

Should you buy a Volkswagen T-Cross?

Anyone who likes the idea of an SUV but doesn’t want the bulk of some of those heftier examples out there would do well to consider the Volkswagen T-Cross.

It’s a great example of the smaller SUV crossover style, which is ideally suited to families or those who like to load up and go, without having to fret about space too much. In fact, considering this is a smaller SUV, the levels of space and comfort on the inside are very impressive, making it a standout choice when put against the likes of the Nissan Juke or Vauxhall Crossland.

Considering its small size, the 1-litre petrol engine model is a great choice too, with more than enough power on offer to suit most needs. A diesel variant is also an option, but considering the T-Cross has less bulk even the petrol edition will be frugal in the same way as the Volkswagen Polo is.

Adding to the appeal is the way the Volkswagen T-Cross is a bundle of fun to drive, with decent ride and handling characteristics. Combined with the decent levels of interior trim, this makes the crossover a great and very affordable used buy, with reasonable plentiful supplies available on the secondhand market.

What’s the best used Volkswagen T-Cross model to buy?

Without hesitation, we’d recommend the 1.0 TSI turbo petrol engine in the Volkswagen T-Cross. It comes in 95 and 115PS versions and both are smooth, refined and deliver decent performance. If you need a bit of extra power for carrying more people on a regular basis or spend a lot of time on the motorway, the more powerful 115PS motor makes better sense. For town-bound drivers, the 95PS will be more than up to the job.

These engines can be had with manual or DSG dual-clutch automatic gearboxes. Unless you really need the auto, we’d stick to the manual. The five-speeder in the 95PS version has the slicker shift, while the six-speeder with the 115PS model gives a little more flexibility.

As for trim, we’d look to the Volkswagen T-Cross SE that builds on the generous spec of the S with 17-inch alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, app connectivity for the infotainment, and a variable height boot floor.

Used Volkswagen T-Cross fuel economy and performance

  • Volkswagen T-Cross 1.0L 95 PS TSI petrol: This might be a small engine but it’s peppy enough and mated to a five-speed manual gearbox returns up to 47.9mpg. Your 0-60 mph time is a reasonably sedate 11.5 seconds.
  • Volkswagen T-Cross 1.0L 115PS petrol: There’s more power on tap from this larger variant, but it’s still pretty good on petrol with up to 47.1mpg being achievable. It’s sprightlier too with a 10.6 0-60mph time at best.
  • Volkswagen T-Cross 1.6L turbo diesel: The engine to choose if you’re looking for best economy with up to 54.3mpg possible from the manual with slightly less coming from the seven-speed automatic model. It might be more economical but performance is leisurely, with a 11.9 seconds 0-60mph time.

What used Volkswagen T-Cross trim levels are available?

The Volkswagen T-Cross has been available in four different trim levels, starting with S and moving up through SE, SEL and topping out with the R-Line models. S cars are fairly basic, with a prevalence of plastics being a common criticism. If you’re looking at something a bit more substantial then the SE and SEL models are a sensible choice, while the R-Line gets all of the trimmings.

  • The Volkswagen T-Cross S is the entry-level trim option, which gets you 16-inch alloys, electrically adjusted and heated door mirrors, LED rear lights and automatic headlights. Inside, there’s a sliding rear bench seat, air conditioning, electric windows and a 8-inch Composition Media infotainment touchscreen with Bluetooth and DAB radio.
  • The Volkswagen T-Cross SE boasts 17-inch alloys, black-painted roof rails, and front foglights with cornering function. For the interior, there’s a leather-bound steering wheel featuring remote controls for the stereo and infotainment plus adaptive cruise control, a driver fatigue warning and Car-Net App-Connect.
  • The Volkswagen T-Cross SEL takes things up a notch thanks rear privacy glass, snazzy silver roof rails as well as front and rear parking sensors. LED front lights top off the exterior. Inside, you get front sports seats, climate control and Discover Navigation.
  • The Volkswagen T-Cross R-Line is the best of the bunch if it’s goodies you’re after with 18-inch alloy wheels, a body styling pack plus R-Line badges. Interior tweaks include black headlining and aluminium foot pedals with special Carbon Flag seat cloth topped off with a 10.25-inch Active Info screen.

Used Volkswagen T-Cross dimensions and boot size

The Volkswagen T-Cross’s dimensions are:

  • Length: 4127mm
  • Width: 1760mm
  • Height: 1573mm
  • Ground clearance: 185mm

The Volkswagen T-Cross’s boot size is:

  • 385-litres
  • 1281 litres with rear seats folded down

Used Volkswagen T-Cross road tax

All used Volkswagen T-Cross models are currently required to pay £150 for road tax.

How much is it to insure a Volkswagen T-Cross?

If you’re looking at keeping things affordable then head for the base model S, which means the Volkswagen T-Cross will be in group 8. Similalrly, the SE model with a 95PS 1-litre TSI engine falls into the same band, which means you can get a slightly better spec for the same sort of money. Diesel fans will be able to enjoy the same benefit for the SE variant too.

The more powerful 115PS 1.0 TSI in SE trim is in group 10, while unsurprisingly the SEL version sits two bands higher. Head up to the R-Line trim and they all sit one insurance band higher than the SEL models.
