Used Renault Captur for sale: everything you need to know

The Renault Captur is among the best-selling small SUVs in the UK. Its plentiful style and space have found it a lot of fans, so there’s a good chance you are thinking about buying a used one. In that case, you’re certainly in the right place. Here, we’ll run through what the Renault Captur is like and which features you get with each trim level in the latest model range. We’ll also look at how the engine options stack up.

Rivals for the Renault Captur include the brilliant Ford Puma, the affordable Hyundai Kona, the popular Vauxhall Mokka and Citroen C3 Aircross, to name but four of more than 20 cars in this sector. Nonetheless, the Renault Captur offers a combination of style, space and efficiency that’s very appealing.

Having been so popular for several years now, there is a large selection of Renault Capturs available to buy used. While you’re here, why not take a look at a Renault Captur for sale on heycar to discover just what’s on offer?

Should you buy a Renault Captur?

The Renault Captur is stylish in an understated kind of way – we think it’s one the best looking small SUVs around. It’s a similar story inside, especially in high-spec models that have an impressive 9.0-inch portrait display screen on the dashboard.

There are plenty of standard features and enough space for four adults to travel comfortably. The rear seats slide backwards and forwards so you can prioritise passenger or boot space respectively. The Renault Captur’s boot is quite large anyway, but it can be made huge if you slide the seats all the way forwards.

The Renault Captur feels really smooth and comfortable to drive. You could do many hundreds of miles in a day in it without stress or discomfort. Unusually for this type of car, the Renault Captur is available with hybrid and plug-in hybrid power, as well as petrol engines. There’s a good spread of trim levels too, so you’ll find a model to suit most needs.

With or without hybrid power, the Renault Captur is really efficient, so running costs should be low. It’s proving to be well made and reliable, too. This is a popular car and demand for used examples is strong, so retained values are good.

A Renault Captur not for you? We've got 1000s of used cars for sale to suit all budgets and needs.

What's the best used Renault Captur to buy?

Most buyers will find the TCe 130 is the best engine choice in the Renault Captur. The 1.3-litre petrol is punchy enough around town yet civilised on the open road. It's well worth the extra cash over the TCe 100. One of the diesels will appeal if you cover a lot of motorway miles, while business drivers will find the tax advantages of the plug-in hybrid E-Tech appealing.

The mid-range Renault Captur Iconic is more desirable than the Play model and won't cost a great deal more on the used market. If you're after a bit of luxury, look for a Captur S Edition.

Used Renault Captur fuel economy and performance

  • Renault Captur TCe 90 petrol – This turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine produces 90PS, which is fine for driving around town. Zero to 62mph takes 14 seconds and it produces CO2 emissions of up to 135g/km. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard.
  • Renault Captur TCe 100 petrol - A little more power makes this a better choice than the 90PS unit. Fuel economy of 47.1mpg makes it a good bet fo city dwellers, and it emits 141g/km. Available with manual and automatic transmissions.
  • Renault Captur TCe 130 petrol - Perhaps the best all-round engine option in the Captur, the TCe 130 offers 0-62mph in 10.6 seconds with the manual gearbox or a swifter 9.6 seconds with the auto transmission. Combined economy registers at a claimed 44.8mpg for the auto, with CO2 emissions of 142g/km.
  • Renault Captur TCe 140 petrol – The more powerful conventional engine is a turbocharged 1.3-litre four-cylinder unit that produces 140PS. That’s enough to get from 0-62mph in 10.3 seconds, with CO2 emissions of up to 133g/km. A six-speed manual gearbox is fitted as standard.
  • Renault Captur TCe 155 petrol - With this 1.3-litre engine, the Captur became something of a warm hatch thanks to 0-62mph in 8.6 seconds. There was no pay-off with fuel economy, which matched the TCe 1.30's 44.8mpg and emissions of 142g/km.
  • Renault Captur 1.5 dCi 95 diesel - The entry-level diesel engine offers 95PS, which was only good enough for 0-62mph in 14.4 seconds. Fuel economy of 58.9mpg was better, while emissions come in at 124g/km.
  • Renault Captur 1.5 dCi 115 diesel - The more powerful diesel engine is the one to have thanks to its greater urge, demonstrated by its 0-62mph dash in a brisker 11.9 seconds. It returns the same fuel economy as the 95PS motor, with CO2 emissions only marginally higher at 130g/km.
  • Renault Captur E-Tech Hybrid 145 petrol – This has a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder engine combined with a small battery and electric motor, producing a total of 145PS. It can be driven on battery power alone for a couple of miles – enough to deal with stop-start town centre traffic. The dash to 62mph takes 10.6 seconds and CO2 emissions are 114g/km. It comes with a six-speed automatic gearbox.
  • Renault Captur E-Tech Plug-in Hybrid 160 petrol – Using the same 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine as the regular hybrid, but with a bigger battery and more powerful electric motor, this produces 160PS in total. The battery holds enough charge for a range of 30 miles driving on electric power. A six-speed automatic gearbox is fitted as standard. Zero to 62mph takes 10.1 seconds and CO2 emissions are just 36g/km.

What used Renault Captur trim levels are available?

The Renault Captur is available in a variety of trims that are all very well-equipped with standard sat-nav and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity across the board.

This latest version of the Renault Captur went on sale in 2019 (Play, Iconic & S Edition), and Renault changed the trim levels in 2022 (Evolution, Techno, R.S. Line and E-Tech Engineered).

  • Renault Captur Play - The Play comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, keyless entry, automatic wipers, cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. It also has climate control, electric windows all-round, 4.2-inch driver information display, and a 7.0-inch infotainment screen with Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
  • Renault Captur Iconic - Choose the Iconic trim over the Play and you gain different alloy wheels, two-tone paint, roof bars, rear privacy glass, and parking sensors at the rear.
  • Renault Captur S Edition - The top spec S Edition model has a larger 9.3-inch infotainment screen and a 7-inch driver display cluster. It also comes with Multi-Sense driving modes, automatic headlights, front parking sensors, a reversing camera, and synthetic leather upholstery.

  • Renault Captur Evolution – It may be the entry-level model, but the Evolution is very generously equipped. Standard features include sat-nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, air conditioning, cruise control and rear parking sensors. The only engine you can’t have with it is the plug-in hybrid.
  • Renault Captur Techno – The Techno adds bigger alloys and more upmarket styling details, plus extra features such as a digital instrument cluster and reversing camera. Choose from all four engines available in the Captur.
  • Renault Captur R.S. Line – This is the sporty-looking, petrol-powered model. It has largely the same standard features as the Techno, but adds a larger 9.3-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen for the media system.
  • Renault Captur E-Tech Engineered – This has similar sporty styling and standard features to the R.S. Line, but has hybrid power, rather than a regular petrol engine. Leather seats and gold trim details give it a more luxurious feel.

Used Renault Captur dimensions and boot size

The Renault Captur’s exterior dimensions are:

  • Length: 4227mm
  • Width: 1797mm
  • Height: 1576mm

The petrol Renault Captur’s boot space is:

  • 422 litres with rear seats pushed back (536 litres with rear seats forwards)
  • 1275 litres with rear seats folded

The hybrid Renault Captur’s boot space is:

  • 326 litres with rear seats pushed back (440 litres with rear seats forwards)
  • 1149 litres with rear seats folded

The plug-in hybrid Renault Captur’s boot space is:

  • 265 litres with rear seats pushed back (379 litres with rear seats forwards)
  • 1118 litres with rear seats folded

Used Renault Captur road tax

Whichever Renault Captur of this second generation line-up you pick, road tax will cost you £180 at the time of writing.

How much is it to insure a Renault Captur?

The Renault Captur range covers insurance groups 8 to 20 (out of 50 in total). The hybrid models are towards the top of that range because their batteries and electric motors can be expensive to repair or replace if they get damaged. The mid-range Techno model slots in at the bottom, as it has more safety and security features than the entry-level Evolution.
