Should you buy a Peugeot Boxer?

The Peugeot Boxer is a classic utility vehicle, which probably explains why it remains little changed today compared to earlier editions. However, in recent years the durable panel van has been given a once over or two, so later editions in the Professional trim are quite appealing.

There’s no doubt the carrying capabilities of the van, and it can also be had in different variants, so if you have specific needs then pick through the used examples to see the breadth of the van styles you can buy.

You’ve got plenty of alternatives however, like the Fiat Ducato and the Citroen Relay, which are both close relatives. There’s also the similarly hardy Ford Transit or the Nissan NV400, while the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Volkswagen Crafter offer a rather more upmarket variation on the theme.

But, if you’re just after a useful workhorse and don’t feel the need to impress then the Peugeot Boxer is as good now as it’s ever been.

What’s the best used Peugeot Boxer model to buy?

Many will buy the Boxer with functionality the first priority so will just look to keep costs as cheap as possible, but the difference in cost between the basic S trim and the mid-range Professional is small enough that it is worth making the step.

The extra kit includes air conditioning, cruise control, lumbar support on the driver’s seat and satellite navigation for a relatively low financial upgrade.

If you don’t need the bigger models then the 120PS engine is still capable of carrying a large payload. If you want anything other than the shortest and lowest model you have no choice but to upgrade to the more powerful engine, which brings a notable upgrade in price.

The electric Peugeot e-Boxer is substantially more expensive than the equivalent diesel Boxer. While you'll slowly make that money back in reduced fuel costs, it's definitely worth doing the sums to make sure it's a financially sound investment.

• Peugeot Boxer 2.0L diesel: Expect a return in the high 40’s if you’re looking for decent miles per gallon from this version.
• Peugeot Boxer 2.2L diesel: Either the 120PS or 140PS variant works well enough and you should get similar economy from either lump, with around 35mpg being achievable.
• Peugeot e-Boxer: This was added in 2022 and is a standard van, which is then converted by a third-party company. There’s a 37kWh short range version or a 70kWh long-range model. Both come in three panel van sizes, as well as a window van or a chassis cab. 

What used Peugeot Boxer trim levels are available?

The Peugeot Boxer has been around for a good few years and feels a little dated alongside some of the more up to date rivals. Therefore, if you can stretch to it the Professional Premium + model is the one to look out for.

• The Peugeot Boxer Basic is a no-frills version of the van, which provides just enough to get by, but invariably steers you towards the more impressive Professional editions. However, all versions get the same dark grey cloth upholstery and you can upgrade to alloy wheels with either 15- or 16-inch rims on offer.
• The Peugeot Boxer Professional is the one to go for with solid levels of specification. You get the likes of air conditioning, rear parking sensors, front electric window, cruise control, adjustable driver’s seat, armrest, passenger benchseat. Tech is better too with a 7-inch capacitive colour touchscreen with DAB radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, integrated satellite navigation, Bluetooth handsfree, USB and steering wheel mounted controls.
