Despite using a naming convention that will be familiar to MG enthusiasts, the MG ZS is a compact crossover aimed at families who want affordable motoring. It started out as a petrol-engined offering back in 2017 but has since been revised and now comes as an EV too. This has turned it into a popular option for those dipping their toes into the all-electric world for the first time.
The MG ZS has been revised over the years, receiving a facelift in 2020, which saw the car get a much better appearance on the outside as well as receiving some tweaks to the interior, including the addition of a new touchscreen infotainment system. For anyone wanting a used and spacious petrol-powered crossover, the 1.0-litre or 1.5-litre petrol cars are worth investigating. However, the main appeal for many is the entry-level EV benefits of this model, with a decent specification on tap for the money.
There are plenty of alternatives to the MG ZS however, with petrol options including the Dacia Duster for like-minded money, but closely followed by the Nissan Juke or Renault Captur if you're prepared to spend more. For variations on the EV theme, look no further than the Hyundai Kona Electric or Kia e-Niro as two prime examples, though both will cost you more to buy. Based on that alone, the MG ZS is still a solid value budget purchase.
Search for a used MG ZS and you'll find plenty out there, thanks mainly to the overall popularity of this affordable family-focused crossover. Prices are generally lower than many rivals, which is perhaps the biggest draw, especially when it comes to the all-electric model variants.
Aside from low prices, you'll get the benefit of MG's long warranty while the car itself offers a decent amount of space and all of the amenities, even if they're quite basic. Comfort levels are acceptable enough for a budget-focused car and the infotainment gets the job done, even though this is a frequent source of moans for some owners.
If you can live with its shortcomings, and less than brilliant fuel economy if you plump for a petrol model, the MG ZS is a decent thing to look at and performs as expected. It's not the most exciting car in the world to drive, but if you're just after practicality without breaking the bank, it's a decent bet.

We reckon the 1.5 MG ZS Excite is the one to look out for. Excite is the mid-level model and comes with air con and parking sensors that the basic version lacks. It’s the most popular model on the used market. The EVs are solid too.
The MG ZS was originally available as a petrol-engined model, with a choice of 1.5-litre or 1.0-litre petrol to choose. The former delivers 105bhp and boasts 141Nm of torque, taking it from 0-60mph in 10.2 seconds. Meanwhile, the 109bhp and 160Nm of torque 1.0-litre engine makes a good alternative option, with a 10.3-second 0-60mph time but a zestier performance feel thanks to a turbocharger. MG reckons you'll get around 40mpg, but real world situations tend to deliver less impressive results.
There are four electric variants of the MG ZS. The ZS EV SE and MG ZS EV Trophy feature a 51.1kWh battery while both the MG ZS EV SE Long Range and MG ZS EV Trophy Long Range feature a 72.6kWh battery. All used MG ZS's come with a standardised top speed of 108mph and 0-60mph is achievable in 8 seconds and 8.2 respectively. Maximum range varies between 198/273 (combined) and 266/370 (city).
The MG ZS is available used in several different model variants, including Explore, Excite, Exclusive and Limited Edition. Currently though you can only buy the MG ZS in Excite and Exclusive trim levels.
The entry-level MG ZS SE is pretty sparsely equipped with automatic air conditioning, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Auto Android, as well as fabric upholstery.
The MG ZS Exclusive comes with a digital driver information display, bi-function LED headlights, 360-degree parking camera, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry, push-button start and heated front seats.

The original incarnation of the MG ZS The MG ZS was launched in 2017 so falls under the latest VED system introduced in April of that year. This means you’ll pay £150 a year for your VED regardless of what petrol model you choose. Electric versions of the MG ZS are zero emissions and that means you will not currently pay any road tax.
Petrol versions of the MG ZS are cheap to insure with the 1.0-litre models falling into group 10 and the 1.5-litre versions in group 11, which means low premiums, especially if you have maximum no claims bonus and are keeping it on a driveway.
