The Kia Stonic is a high-riding saloon that sits in the same sort of area as the Nissan Juke and Renault Captur, so if you’re in the market for a small SUV it’s well worth considering.

The Kia Stonic isn’t one of the most scintillating cars you’ll ever drive, but it is undeniably practical, which makes it ideally suited to budget-conscious families after value.

Even the most basic Kia Stonic models come fairly well appointed, with smart 17-inch alloy wheels and a decent level of specification inside. This includes the likes of DAB digital radio, Apple CarPlay, air-conditioning, rear parking sensors and cruise control too.

Look for the higher trim spec models and you’ll be rewarded with even more features, while the top-of-the-range edition packs in a lather steering wheel, satellite navigation and leather upholstery too. Premium editions also benefit from five-star Euro NCAP status as opposed to lowlier models that have just three stars.

Nevertheless, the Kia Stonic is a sensible proposition whatever level you’re considering with both petrol and diesel engines to tempt you further. It might not be especially exciting to drive but the Kia Stonic can be frugal to own and run, with up to 57mpg achievable from the diesel and 47mpg from the petrol variant also possible.

What’s the best used Kia Stonic model to buy?

Choosing the best engine is easy, because not only is the 1.0-litre T-GDI unit most in-tune with the characteristics of the Stonic, it also makes the most sense. The turbocharged three-cylinder engine delivers 120PS, which is enough to propel the Stonic to 62mph in 9.9 seconds.

It also offers up to 47.1mpg on a combined cycle. This might be around 10mpg less than you’ll see in a Stonic with the 1.6-litre CRDi diesel, but the latter only makes sense if you spend most of your time on the motorway.

As for the trim level, even the basic Stonic 2 offers a generous level of equipment. The spec list includes 17-inch alloy wheels, a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, air conditioning, rear parking sensors and cruise control. However, we’d upgrade to the Stonic 3, if only for the additional safety equipment.

Kia Stonic 1.0L T-GDi petrol: The zesty little turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine produces 120PS, which is enough to propel the Stonic to 62mph in a dependable 9.9 seconds and there’s a top speed of 114mph. You should also get up to 47.1mpg on a combined cycle, though this drops if you plump for the seven-speed automatic transmission.
Kia Stonic 1.4L MPI: A four-cylinder petrol engine that does the job, albeit in slightly lacklustre fashion. Perhaps the least appealing proposition here.
Kia Stonic 1.6L CRDi diesel: The diesel option makes a lot more sense, especially if you’re going to be clocking up motorway miles although it’s a little lacking in puff. The 1.6 will get to 62mph in 10.5 seconds and the top speed is 112mph. Most appealing is the way it offers 56.5mpg in official tests.

The Kia Stonic 2 is the base level model, but it packs a decent specification that includes 17-inch alloy wheels, a seven-inch touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, air-conditioning, all-round electric windows, roof rails, rear parking sensors and cruise control.
The Kia Stonic Maxx is the more desirable mid-spec model with extra equipment and style. Available with the 100PS and mild-hybrid 125PS versions of the Ecoboost turbo petrol engine, it can also be had with a seven-speed Powershift automatic gearbox.
The Kia Stonic 3 ups the ante somewhat and gets the benefit of a Euro NCAP five-star rating plus sat-nav, a reversing camera, LED rear lights, rain-sensing wipers, cloth/faux leather upholstery, forward collision avoidance as well as lane keeping.
The Kia Stonic 4 also gets the Euro NCAP five-star rating along with all of the driver safety benefits.
