New Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer on the road front

Vauxhall has unveiled the new Astra Sports Tourer. The Volkswagen Golf Estate rival is available to buy now with prices starting at £25,005.

The new Astra Sports Tourer follows hot on the heels of the new Astra hatchback, with a fresh new look and an efficient range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Will the new Astra Sports Tourer be good enough to rival 2022's best estate cars?

Prices for the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer estate start at £25,005 for the entry-level 110PS 1.2-litre petrol, while the 130PS 1.5-litre diesel is available from £26,605. The 180PS 1.6 Plug-In Hybrid-e is priced from £33,400 and will provide up to 42 miles of electric range.

The new Astra Sports Tourer is more expensive than the car it replaces but you do get more value for your money with 16-inch alloy wheels, parking sensors, 10-inch touchscreen navigation and LED headlights included as standard, along with a comprehensive package of autonomous driving aids that will provide lane guidance, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and driver drowsiness alerts.

The new Astra Sports Tourer is available with a 1.2 petrol, 1.5 diesel or plug-in hybrid power. Vauxhall could launch an all-electric Astra Sports Tourer in 2023.

The turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol engine is shared with the Peugeot 2008 and is available with 110PS or 130PS in the Astra. The three-cylinder engine drives the front-wheel via a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox if you choose the 130PS version.

The 1.5-litre diesel develops 130PS and is offered with the same manual or automatic transmission line-up. As things stand, there are no plans for a four-wheel drive model.

The Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid-e combines a 1.6 petrol engine with a plug-in battery pack to produce 180PS. A full charge will take around two hours and offer up to 42 miles of electric range.

Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer interior design and practicality

Unlike its rivals, which tend to get bigger with each new model, the 2022 Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer is 60mm shorter than the old Astra estate. This is due to its shorter front overhang that should also make the new model easier to park.

The boot of the petrol and diesel models is 608 litres with the rear seats in place, extending to 1,634 litres when you lower the second row. Boot space drops to 548 litres and 1,574 litres, respectively, for the plug-in hybrid due to the location of the battery pack under the car floor.

You get the choice of two trim levels, Design and GS Line. The entry-level Design model is generously equipped with touchscreen navigation, climate control and parking sensors fitted as standard. The driver also gets a 10-inch digital instrument display, which can be customised with maps and a range of in-car data points.

The GS Line model adds sports body styling, black 17-inch alloy wheels and a black roof. You also get a leather flat bottomed steering wheel and a pair of heated sports seats in the front that are fully approved by the Campaign for Healthier Backs.

Other highlights of the GS Line include a 360-degree parking camera, adaptive cruise control and keyless entry and start.
