Used Suzuki Ignis for sale: everything you need to know

The Suzuki Ignis is an alternative to the traditional city car contenders, matching an interesting crossover SUV design with plenty of practicality. It makes for an intriguing car to buy or lease.

Being a unique design means the Suzuki Ignis has few obvious rivals. The Fiat Panda comes closest in size and spirit and can be had with all-wheel-drive like the Suzuki Ignis. The new Toyota Aygo X also delivers a small-scale crossover style, while more conventional city car options include the Volkswagen Up.

If you are considering a Suzuki Ignis, keep reading for all the important information you need to know. Take a look at a Suzuki Ignis for sale on heycar to discover just what’s on offer.

Should you buy a Suzuki Ignis?

Looking for something a little different to the usual city car contenders? The Suzuki Ignis could be a good choice to make. It’s more distinctive than most of its competitors, and offers a strong helping of practicality. Overall, there are plenty of good qualities to recommend it.

Central to the appeal of the Suzuki Ignis is its practical five-door crossover SUV design. Raising the ride height not only produces a higher driving position, but also adds to the feeling of space inside the Suzuki Ignis.

Adults will feel perfectly at home in the front, while rear-seat space is dependent on the model chosen. Cramming three adults onto the bench of the entry-level SZ3 version is unlikely, but the moveable seat of the SZ-T and SZ5 make more sense. Being able to slide the seats backwards and forwards allows for legroom or the already-generous boot space to be increased, too.

When it comes to the interior quality, the Suzuki Ignis does not deliver a particularly premium vibe. However, you’ll find plenty of solid plastics and trim, which reinforces the impression of a dependable car that is built to last.

On the road, the Suzuki Ignis plays up to its SUV styling, with a comfortable ride that can absorb most bumps in the road. Although it has plenty of grip, the Suzuki Ignis is not an overly sporty model, and makes most sense when driven more sedately.

The Suzuki Ignis is an unusual take on the city car, offering a high-riding miniature SUV design. For drivers who want something a little different, or simply prefer a raised seating position, it makes for an intriguing option.

Factor in the no-nonsense robust cabin, low running costs and simple model range, and the Suzuki Ignis is an appealing choice.

A Suzuki Ignis not for you? We've got 1000s of used cars for sale to suit all budgets and needs.

What's the best used Suzuki Ignis model to buy?

Such is the strong engine range and good specification offered on the Ignis, you can’t really make any bad decisions here. The entry-level SZ3 Ignis comes with a lot of the key equipment that you might want, including ESC traction control, air con, LED daytime running lights, and a DAB audio system with USB input.

However, we’d suggest going for the mid-range SZ-T, which adds alloy wheels and a touchscreen system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also switches the fixed rear bench (with three seat belts) for a two-seat arrangement with sliding rear seats, so you can adjust the space for passengers and increase the luggage area easily. The top-spec SZ5 takes this a step further with climate control, cruise control and a reversing camera, but there is little here that you’ll miss if you go for the SZ-T instead.

As for the engine options, even though the hybrid is a little quicker and more fuel efficient, it's a little more expensive. The All-Grip four-wheel-drive option might also be useful if you regularly cover difficult terrain or live further into the countryside.

Used Suzuki Ignis fuel economy and performance

The Suzuki Ignis uses just one petrol engine, but with hybrid assistance, and a choice of front or all-wheel drive. Depending on the model picked, buyers can choose between a five-speed manual gearbox or a CVT automatic.

  • Suzuki Ignis 1.2 Dualjet: The 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine fitted to the Suzuki Ignis produces 83hp. Although this doesn’t sound much, the Ignis counters with a relatively low kerb weight. Accelerating from 0-62mph takes a leisurely 12.0 seconds, but average fuel economy can reach 58mpg, aided by mild-hybrid technology.
  • Suzuki Ignis 1.2 Dualjet AllGrip: For those who might need to venture off the beaten track, the Suzuki Ignis can be specified with AllGrip all-wheel drive. This uses the same 1.2-litre petrol engine, with no extra power. The 0-62mph time slows to just under 13 seconds, with average fuel economy of 52.4mpg.

What used Suzuki Ignis trim levels are available?

The Suzuki Ignis comes with a choice of three different trim levels, allowing used buyers to tailor their choice to what they need most.

  • Suzuki Ignis SZ3: The entry-level Suzuki Ignis model feels a little basic compared to most other city cars you might consider. There are steel wheels instead of alloys, and the interior lacks a multimedia touchscreen. Air conditioning, LED headlights and a DAB radio are all included, however.
  • Suzuki Ignis SZ-T: The SZ-T has proven to be popular. It brings niceties such as alloy wheels and a touchscreen to the party, with the latter including Apple CarPlay phone connectivity. It also sees the standard three-seat rear bench ditched for a pair of moveable seats, leaving the Suzuki Ignis as a four-seater.
  • Suzuki Ignis SZ5: Buyers who want maximum technology should opt for the range-topping SZ5. Climate control air-con, satellite navigation, cruise control and a leather-wrapped steering wheel are all included.
  • Suzuki Ignis Adventure: Added to the Ignis range in early 2018, the Adventure comes with rear view camera, 16-inch alloy wheels, roof rails and individually sliding rear seats. It also has a rear spoiler, side mouldings, front and rear skid plates, coloured front grille centre bar, side decal set and colour keyed front fog lamp bezels.

Used Suzuki Ignis dimensions and boot size

The Suzuki Ignis’s exterior dimensions are:

  • Length: 3700mm
  • Width: 1690mm
  • Height: 1605mm
  • Ground clearance: 180mm

The Suzuki Ignis’s boot space is:

  • 260 litres
  • 514 litres with rear seats folded

Used Suzuki Ignis road tax

The Suzuki Ignis qualifies as an alternative fuel vehicle thanks to its mild hybrid assistance for the petrol engine. This means road tax is charged at £170 per year, which is a saving of £10 on the standard rate. A small win, but a victory nonetheless.

How much is it to insure a Suzuki Ignis?

The Suzuki Ignis may be small, but it’s placed in a higher insurance group than the norm for diminutive city cars. Both the SZ3 and SZ-T models are rated in group 17 (out of 50). Moving to the top-spec SZ5 with AllGrip all-wheel drive increases insurance to group 18. For comparison, the rival Volkswagen Up starts from the very lowest insurance group one.
