Used Porsche Macan for sale: everything you need to know

The Porsche Macan is a performance SUV from the German brand. Created to sit below the luxurious Porsche Cayenne, it was launched in 2014 and has been revised several times since then. It uses the same base as the Audi Q5. Don’t let this put you off, because the Macan is a true Porsche thanks to exhaustive developments.

Rivals to the Porsche Macan include the desirable Range Rover Velar, the popular Mercedes-Benz GLC and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

This means it’s still a great used car to consider. Porsche is the master of customisation as well, allowing new owners to create a really distinct Porsche Macan just for them. This means used buyers now have a wide spread of options when picking the car to suit them. Take a look at a Porsche Macan for sale on heycar to discover just what’s on offer.

Should you buy a Porsche Macan?

The Porsche Macan has a familiar profile, but age hasn’t withered it. To drive, it remains an absolutely top-notch contender, with an exceptionally agile and engaging driving experience. It’s a class act even by regular car standards. When you consider it’s a high-riding SUV with standard all-wheel drive and a modicum of off-road ability, Porsche’s achievement becomes all the more remarkable.

Choose from a range of petrol engines, all of which have a seven-speed DCT automatic gearbox for ultimate ease of use. By modern standards, they’re not the most fuel-efficient, but even the entry version will do 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds, so at least you’re getting sporty performance for your sub-30mpg. Porsche also offered a 3.0 V6 turbodiesel with 262PS that was no slouch while making a nod to fuel economy.

It’s a surprisingly practical machine – not something you’d say about every Porsche sports car – with a spacious five-seat interior and ample 488-litre boot. Fold the rear seats (they’re split 60:40 as standard) and it expands to over 1,500 litres, which is on a par with some estate cars.

All cars come with Porsche’s latest-generation infotainment, called Porsche Communication Management. It’s a superb system, and fully connected for live updates; you can even communicate with your Porsche Macan via your smartphone. Just note that lots of the centre console buttons were replaced with touch-sensitive controls in later cars, which take some getting used to.

The Porsche Macan not for you? We've got 1000s of used cars for sale to suit all budgets and needs.

What's the best used Porsche Macan model to buy?

That much depends what you’re after, and what your budget is. If you want your Porsche Macan to go for as far as possible between fill-ups, and you’re happy to settle for an older car, then you’ll want the diesel. It’s more than fast enough to let you enjoy the Macan’s sublime driving manners, and it’s reasonably refined, too.

However, the diesel was discontinued in 2018, so if you’re after a newer example, it’ll have to be a petrol. The entry-level 2.0-litre is fine, but in the scheme of things, it hardly costs anything to upgrade to the S, which is faster and sounds much better. The GTS and Turbo are better still on those fronts, but there is quite a price premium for those models in the used market. For that reason, the S gets the nod from us.

Used Porsche Macan fuel economy and performance

The Porsche Macan range moved to an all-petrol line-up in 2018 as the 3.0 V6 turbodiesel was dropped at this point. All Porsche Macans come with four-wheel drive and a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission.

  • Porsche Macan 2.0-litre petrol: The standard Porsche Macan uses a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder engine that produces 265PS. This delivers 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds, along with average fuel economy of 28.0mpg. CO2 emissions start from 228g/km. Choose it in Porsche Macan T grade and Porsche includes the Sport Chrono pack, with standard launch control to cut the 0-62mph time to 6.2 seconds.
  • Porsche Macan S 2.9-litre V6 petrol: The more potent Porsche Macan S has a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 engine producing 380PS. This gives 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds, or 4.6 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono pack. It averages up to 25.4mpg and emits 251g/km CO2.
  • Porsche Macan GTS 2.9-litre V6 petrol: The GTS’s V6 is boosted to 440PS, which cuts 0-62mph acceleration to 4.5 seconds, or 4.3 seconds with the Sport Chrono pack’s launch control. It averages 25.0mpg and emits 255g/km of CO2.
  • Porsche Macan S 3.0 V6 diesel: This Audi-sourced 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel offered 262PS. Driving through the same automatic gearbox as the others in the range, it could see off 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds. Driven more conservatively, the diesel offered 46.3mpg combined economy and 161g/km carbon dioxide emissions.

What used Porsche Macan trim levels are available?

The Porsche Macan is offered in four well-defined model grades. The most recent addition was the Porsche Macan T, for those who wanted sportier styling in combination with the relatively fuel-efficient 265PS 2.0-litre turbo engine.

  • The Porsche Macan is the entry-level model, but most owners don’t simply buy one straight out of the box. Instead, they hit the configurator to create a custom model, and Porsche offers as much personalisation with this version as any other.
  • The Porsche Macan T is a racier-looking model with lowered suspension, larger wheels, plentiful Agate grey detailing and a snazzier interior. It comes with the Sport Chrono package, which means standard launch control.
  • The Porsche Macan S is the most affordable V6-engined Porsche Macan, with a big lift in performance. The basic model spec is broadly similar to the standard Porsche Macan in terms of spec, though, meaning the price jump is surprisingly manageable.
  • The Porsche Macan GTS is the sportiest Porsche Macan, using the GTS theme also seen in models such as the Porsche 911. It has the most power, the most focused suspension and sportiest interior.

Used Porsche Macan dimensions and boot size

The Porsche Macan’s exterior dimensions are:

  • Length: 4,726mm
  • Width: 1,922mm (with door mirrors folded)
  • Height: 1,621mm
  • Ground clearance: 187mm (air suspension) / 202mm (steel suspension)

The Porsche Macan’s boot space is:

  • 488 litres
  • 1,503 litres with rear seats folded

Used Porsche Macan road tax

With any Porsche Macan up to five-years old, you will pay road tax of £180 per year plus the additional £370 charge levied on cars that cost more than £40,000 when new that was introduced in 2020.

Older Macan registered from 1 April 2017 simply pay the flat £180 rate, while cars registered prior to this date have their road tax worked out on a sliding scale of emissions. This means a 2.0-litre model will pay £395 per year and the GTS comes in at £695 for 12 months' duty.

How much is it to insure a Porsche Macan?

As a Porsche, the Macan is likely to prove more expensive to insure than other similar-sized SUVs. The standard model has a group 41 (out of 50) insurance rating, with the Porsche Macan S pushing up to group 45. The Porsche Macan GTS has a heady group 47 insurance rating.
