Used MINI Clubman for sale: everything you need to know

The MINI Clubman offers the fun driving experience of a regular MINI hatchback, but with the benefit of extra interior space. It may be small but it's a great estate car. It offers an intriguing alternative to the Volkswagen Golf – one that is brimful of retro charm.

Although smaller than conventional estate cars, the MINI Clubman is also bigger than regular family hatchbacks. This makes it more practical than rivals such as the Audi A3 Sportback or the popular Mercedes-Benz A-Class, yet it offers a similarly premium image. If you want something bigger, the MINI Countryman is a good choice.

MINI has simplified the MINI Clubman range, but has retained the upmarket touches and engaging driving experience it is known for. Here, we have all the information you need if you plan to buy or lease one. Take a look at a MINI Clubman for sale on heycar to discover just what’s on offer.

Should you buy a MINI Clubman?

The MINI Clubman is a unique proposition in the family hatchback world. It is bigger than conventional hatchbacks such as the Audi A3 Sportback, but smaller than dedicated estate cars like the Volkswagen Golf Estate. Having two vertically-split rear doors is different, and does deliver an extra degree of charm.

For passengers in the front and rear, the MINI Clubman should feel decently spacious. They will also benefit from the high level of standard equipment, plus quality fit and finish throughout. Demonstrating the MINI brand’s Britishness, the MINI Clubman features LED tail lights with a Union Jack design.

Although the MINI Clubman isn’t quite as exciting as the smaller MINI hatchbacks, it still delivers plenty of fun from behind the wheel. Weighty steering and taut body control mean it feels exciting through the corners, while all the engine options deliver good performance. Opting for the range-topping John Cooper Works results in true hot hatch pace.

MINI has developed a strong brand identity, making the cars desirable to buy or lease. This strong image should mean no problems when the time comes to change for something new. Running costs are reasonable, with MINI’s turbocharged engines blending performance and fuel economy.

This all makes the MINI Clubman more interesting and intriguing than a conventional hatchback. So whether you buy or lease, going large means the whole family can enjoy the excitement of MINI ownership.

The MINI Clubman offers a unique take on the traditional hatchback, adding extra practicality but still maintaining the classic MINI charm and driving experience. It means that, new or used, it can offer a different take on family motoring.

Although the Volkswagen Golf Estate, for example, offers more space inside, it cannot compete with the MINI Clubman’s level of fun. The MINI Clubman also has a premium image, which puts it ahead of estates from Ford and Skoda. In fact, the MINI badge can easily see the MINI Clubman stand as an alternative to the Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake. If you want the MINI lifestyle, but with extra space for passengers and luggage, the MINI Clubman is a solid choice.

A MINI Clubman not for you? We've got 1000s of used cars for sale to suit all budgets and needs.

What’s the best used MINI Clubman model to buy?

For most buyers the MINI Clubman's 1.5-litre petrol is the optimum choice – with 136PS it’s usefully brisk with decent acceleration and comfortable cruising. The 2.0-litre diesel is less refined and doesn’t feel as quick in everyday driving but offers the best economy and is better-suited to carrying heavy loads.

The MINI Clubman may only have three trim levels but there are numerous packs and personalisation options, so it’s important to have in mind what you want and need in advance. The standard Classic specification is strong, with a 6.5-inch infotainment screen, DAB radio with Bluetooth, ambient lighting and automatic headlights and wipers. Of the options available, the Comfort Pack adds things like heated seats, climate control and rear parking sensors for a reasonable price, but if you go for the Navigation Plus pack you get all this plus Apple CarPlay, enhanced Bluetooth with wireless charging and a host of connected services too.

Used MINI Clubman fuel economy and performance

  • MINI Cooper Clubman: The entry-level petrol engine when the Clubman launched in 2015, the Cooper is still the most popular choice on the used market, as it made up a third of all Clubmans sold. It uses a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder engine with 136PS. Later versions are known as the 1.5 TwinPower. It promises a 9.1 second 0-62mph time and officual fuel economy of 47.1mpg. As with all the initial engine line-ups, customers could choose a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed automatic,
  • MINI Cooper D Clubman: This four-cylinder, 2.0-litre diesel engine has 150PS and will go from 0-62mph in 8.6 seconds while still promising up to 68.9mpg, meaning it mixes strong performance with excellent fuel economy.
  • MINI Cooper S Clubman: The Cooper S used a larger petrol engine – a four-cylinder, 2.0-litre, turbocharged unit with 192PS. Its 0-62mph time is 7.2 seconds (7.1 with an automatic gearbox) and it promises fuel consumption of up to 48.7mpg. The S is also available with MINI's ALL4 all-wheel-drive system.
  • MINI Cooper SD Clubman: The more potent diesel engine ups power to 190PS, thereby dropping the 0-62mph time to 7.4 seconds. Nevertheless, it promises up to 65.7mpg. The SD is also available with ALL4 all-wheel-drive.
  • MINI One D Clubman: Launched in 2016, mainly for the fleet market, this is a very efficient diesel model. It uses a three-cylinder, 1.6-litre engine with 116PS and a claimed fuel economy of 74.3mpg.
  • MINI John Cooper Works Clubman: Introduced late in 2016, this performance model Clubman uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine with 231hp and came as standard with ALL4 all-wheel-drive. This gives it a 0-62mph time of 6.3 seconds, with claimed fuel consumption of up to 41.5mpg.

As time went on, MINI dropped certain engine options and tweaked others. It also dropped the manual gearbox, leaving the seven-speed Steptronic automatic as the only option. By 2023, the engine range looked as follows

  • MINI Clubman Cooper 1.5 TwinPower: The MINI Clubman Cooper uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine. This entry-level version offers 136PS and the ability to accelerate from 0-62mph in less than 10 seconds. It’s also the most economical MINI Clubman engine, offering official fuel economy of 47.1mpg.
  • MINI Clubman Cooper S 2.0 TwinPower: Opting for the performance Cooper S sees the MINI Clubman powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine that delivers 178PS. The additional power cuts the 0-62mph time to just over seven seconds, but the Cooper S can still achieve up to 44.8mpg.
  • MINI Clubman John Cooper Works 2.0 TwinPower: The range-topping John Cooper Works model also uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. Producing a substantial 306PS, it turns the MINI Clubman into a serious performance estate. Unlike the other front-driven MINI Clubman models, the John Cooper Works puts its power down via ALL4 all-wheel drive. The extra traction helps towards a 0-62mph time of less than five seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

What used MINI Clubman trims levels are available?

The MINI Clubman is able with a range of different trim levels, along with three different engines – not to mention endless options for personalisation. Early Clubmans didn't come with trims, exactly – rather, you chose the engine you wanted, which came with certain standard features and could be enhanced with various option packs. Later, more traditional trim levels were introduced

  • MINI Clubman City: Launched in 2018 and aimed mainly at business customers, the Clubman City included sat-nav and rear parking sensors as standard, along with Apple CarPlay. It came on 16-inch alloys as standard withe One or One D engines.
  • MINI Clubman Classic: From 2019, MINI started offering more traditional trims, starting with the  Classic. Features such as climate control air-con, LED headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels (17-inch on the Cooper S model) and rear parking sensors are all included.
  • MINI Clubman Sport: The Sport model, as the name suggests, adds a sporty look inspired by the John Cooper Works model, but without the higher performance and running costs. A sports steering wheel, 17-inch alloy wheels and sport seats are all standard.
  • MINI Clubman Exclusive: Moving up to the MINI Clubman Cooper Exclusive brings additional luxuries. A set of 18-inch alloy wheels are added, with the interior gaining leather sports seats.
  • MINI Clubman John Cooper Works: As the high-performance flagship of the MINI Clubman range, the John Cooper Works is bursting with extra equipment. From 18-inch wheels, to sports suspension and performance brakes, the John Cooper Works is built for speed. Sports seats, a panoramic glass sunroof and a Harman Kardon premium sound system are included.
  • MINI Clubman Shadow Edition: Introduced in 2021, the Shadow Edition featured Midnight Black Paint, Shadow Grapohics and an exclusive bonnet design. It's based on the Sport trim, but features 19-inch alloy wheels.
  • MINI Clubman Untold Edition: This 2022 model came with Sage Green paint and extra bodywork inspired by an aerodynamic kit previously available on the John Cooper Works models. Bonnet and roof stripes were included, as were 18-inch alloy wheels with black and brass elements included. Brass colour is also features on the grille surround, while the interior features Safe Green leather as standard.
  • MINI Clubman Final Edition: With production of the Clubman finishing in 2023, the Final Edition is a limited-edition send off, with three exclusive paint colours and just 100 models for the UK. It was sold with the Cooper S engine and rides on 18-inch copper-coloured alloy wheels.

Cooper Ds and 1.5-litre Coopers registered before this date qualify for a £30 annual VED rate, but revert to the £180 rate if registered from April 2017 onwards.

How much is it to insure a MINI Clubman?

The MINI Clubman needn't be too expensive to insure, although it does depend on how much performance you want. As the entry-level model, the MINI Clubman Cooper has the lowest rating of insurance group 17 (out of 50). Moving up to the MINI Clubman Cooper S increases this to group 22, with the John Cooper Works in group 30.
