Should you buy a Bentley Bentayga?

Given its exclusivity, the Bentley Bentayga is not too common a site on the road, which gives it surefire appeal if you’re looking to make a statement.

Bentley is keeping things bang up to date though with the 3-litre V6 petrol plug-in hybrid, which is another angle if you’re not after the grunt of those bigger engined cars. Whatever your engine choice, the eight-speed auto box manages the power nicely and provides a dream drive that requires little in the way of effort.

Aside from luxury and performance, the other big draw with the Bentley Bentayga is the space you get inside. What’s the best used Bentley Bentayga model to buy?

The following statement may sound like a cop out, but it applies more to the Bentayga than it does to most cars: that largely depends on what you want. There are various flavours of Bentayga, and each of them will suit different buyers with different priorities. 

If you want the ultimate Bentayga, it has to be the Speed, with it’s enormous W12 petrol engine. If you want the cerebral choice, the V8 petrol will be more up your street, while if you spend your life ploughing up and down motorways, the V8 diesel will be the pick (you’ll still spend shedloads on fuel, but you’ll have to stop less often to put the stuff in). That said, if you’ve got one eye on either the environment or the Exchequer, then the plug-in hybrid version will be worth considering.

Choose from a range of engines for your used Bentley Bentayga, from a W12 petrol past V8 petrol and diesel powertrains and onwards to the more frugal end of the spectrum - a plug-in hybrid V6. • Bentley Bentayga 3.0L: This hybrid V6 engine still has a decent level of power but offers up reasonable economy with up to 83 miles per gallon. Better still, there’s up to 24.8 miles of all-electric range.

Used Bentley Bentayga road tax

A Bentley Bentayga registered after April 1st, 2017, is liable for the maximum VED bill available under the current tax system, which is £475 per year between years two and six of the car’s life. It then moves to £150 every year after that, although the hybrid enjoys a £10 discount.

A Bentayga registered before that date will be taxed under the old CO2-related system. Cars of this era will be either W12s, which will cost you £580 per year, or diesels, which will cost £330.

Alongside the luxury expect to pay a premium for Bentley Bentayga insurance because it sits right at the top of the tree at group 50. This is the most expensive one there is, which means annual insurance figures are likely to be steep.
