New 2025 Volvo XC90: Price, specs and release date

Written By Phill Tromans

2025 Volvo XC90

Volvo has unveil a refreshed version of its large SUV, the XC90, with overhauled looks and a new interior.

The current Volvo XC90 is long in the tooth by modern car standards, having been on sale since 2015. Although it still holds its own well against its rivals, Volvo has decided it's time for a substantial overhaul, and its second facelift (the first was in 2019) is designed to keep it fresh against its myriad rivals.

The styling and equipment levels have been heavily influenced by the car's electric sister car, the Volvo EX90. Power-wise, all new XC90s will be hybrids, although that includes mild-hybrid models, as well as plug-in hybrids.

Volvo will be hoping that the new facelifted XC90 continues to be competitive against premium cars like the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE, as well as more value-for-money alternatives like the Kia Sorento.

New 2025 Volvo XC90: price and release date

The new Volvo XC90 will open for orders in October. Prices start from £63,790 for the entry-level mild-hybrid model, while the plug-in hybrid versions start at £72,650 for the Core trim, £77,650 for the Plus and the top-spec T8 Ultra model costs from £84,150.

The interior of the revised XC90 gets the infotainment system found in Volvo's latest cars, such as the EX90 and EX30.

New 2025 Volvo XC90: exterior and interior

The exterior faceflit of the new Volvo XC90 brings an updated grille and new slimmer headlights, although they maintain the signature design (known as Thor's Hammer) within the units. They're Matrix headlights, which means you can maintain high-beam at night without dazzling oncoming traffic. The bumper is more minimalist and all the body panels have been reworked, with new alloy wheel designs.

Volvo has called on its more recent cars, such as the EX90 and the EX30, when refreshing the interior of the XC90. The latest family infotainment system has been brought in, which means an 11-inch centre display and a 12-inch centre display with lots of Google features included, as well as Apple CarPlay. All models get a wireless phone charger, too. The actual interior design has been tweaked with extra space in the centre console and an extra cupholder.

New 2025 Volvo XC90: powertrains and performance

You'll be able to order a new XC90 with either a mild-hybrid petrol engine or as a plug-in hybrid.

The B5 mild-hybrid model uses a 2.0-litre petrol engine with 250PS and 360Nm, which gives it a 7.7-second sprint from standstill to 62mph. Like all XC90s, it has four-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The B6 model ups the power to 299PS.

The T8 plug-in hybrid uses a pegtrol engine with an electric motor and battery for an electric-only range of 44.1 miles, which is an improvement on the early model, but some way behind the 60-70 miles that newer rivals can return. The powertrain makes 455PS and can reach 62mph in 5.4 seconds.

Although the XC90 is now pushing 10 years old, its latest overhaul means it still looks fresh.

New 2025 Volvo XC90: trim levels

There are three trim levels for the new Volvo XC90. The entry level model, for both mild-hybrid and PHEV cars, is the Core trim, although it's still very well equipped, with Matrix LED headlights and 20-inch alloy wheels, wireless phone charging, four-zone climate control and adaptive cruise control.

Upgrading to Plus trim adds a panoramic roof and a Harman Kardon premium sound system, as well as active air suspension, while the top-spec Ultra model features an even more fancy Bowers & Wilkins sound system, ventilation and massage functions on the front seats (which are upholstered in Nappa leather, a 360-degree camera system and a head-up display. It rides on 21-inch wheels.

Find a used Volvo XC90 for sale

If you don't want to wait for the new XC90, or your budget doesn't stretch to a brand-new car, why not look at a used example?

Because it's been on sale for so long, there are used XC90s to suit a wide range of budgets. A 2017 model with high mileage can start from as little as £18,000, while a more recent example still represents a good saving over the new price – we've found a mild-hybrid 2023 model in Ultimate trim with 12,000 miles on the clock for £50,000.

Although the Volvo XC90 has been on sale for nearly a decade, the new model will be a facelift rather than an all-new car. Expect substantial revisions for the newest version, keeping it fresh alongside its all-electric equivalent, the Volvo EX90.

The new XC90 will be a rival for seven-seat BMWs like the X5 and the larger, more expensive X7.

The new XC90's plug-in hybrid powertrain has a battery range of up to 44 miles.
