BMW has drawn back the covers on its all-new M5 saloon, which combines a V8 engine with an electrified system to create a whopping 727PS of power.
Arriving in the UK later this year, the £110,500 plug-in hybrid super-saloon is the first electrified BMW M5, adding a 200PS electric motor to a 4.4-litre petrol-powered V8 powering all four wheels.
The big rise in horsepower will go some way to offset a rise in weight, with the various electrical components contributing towards a rise of nearly half a tonne over the outgoing petrol-only M5.
The rest of the M5 ingredients are familiar, with upgrades from the standard 5 Series on the suspension, brakes and steering, as well as lots of standard equipment inside.
The new 2024 BMW M5 will be released in saloon form first, with a Touring estate model following. The range will rival cars like the Audi RS 6 Avant and its forthcoming replacement, the RS 7 Avant, as well as the Mercedes-AMG E53.
New 2024 BMW M5: price and release date
The new BMW M5 costs £110,500 in saloon form, and orders are open now, with deliveries are due to start in November. The new M5 Touring is due for introduction in November, too, and prices have yet to be announced.
New 2024 BMW M5: interior and exterior
The exterior of the new BMW M5 follows a familiar pattern – take the standard BMW 5 Series, beef up the looks and fit lower suspension, which features active dampers as standard. Large brakes sit behind 20-inch alloy wheels at the front and 21-inch numbers at the back. Carbon ceramic brakes are available as an option.
Black-trimmed tailpipes sit at either side of the rear end, with electrically controlled flaps to hone the sound from the V8 engine.
Inside, you get the standard (excellent) 5 Series cabin with numerous features and upgrades for the M model. BMW’s Curved Display infotainment setup is standard, as is a head-up display to project information onto the windscreen.
Electrically adjusted heated sports seats are standard in the front, and a panoramic sunroof as well as four-zone climate control system are included, too. If you get bored of the exhaust note, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system is thrown in as well.
New 2024 BMW M5: engines and gearboxes
The new BMW M5 is the most powerful yet, with its 4.4-litre V8 and electric motor combining to develop a whopping 727PS and 1000Nm of torque. That translates to a 0-62mph time of 3.5 seconds, despite its considerable weight. As a plug-in hybrid, the M5 can drive on electric power alone for up to 43 miles.
It uses an eight-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to all four wheels. However, the driver can decide to send power solely to the rear wheels for a more traditional sportscar feel. The sophisticated setup features rear-wheel steering for enhanced handling, with the rear wheels capable of moving by up to 1.5 degrees.
The new 2024 BMW M5 saloon will cost £110,500 and is on sale now. A BMW M5 Touring estate version is due for reveal later in the year.
The new 2024 BMW M5's plug-in hybrid system allows it to travel on electric power alone for up to 43 miles.
Although the new BMW M5 is on sale now, deliveries won't be until November 2024.
