2024 BMW i5 Touring: front dynamic

The new BMW 5 Series Touring and electric new BMW i5 Touring are the latest executive estate cars from the sporty premium brand.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring continues a long-running load-lugging model line with even more space and even smarter functionality. It is now exclusively available as a plug-in hybrid.

Meanwhile, the new BMW i5 Touring takes the large BMW estate car into the electric era for the first time. There are two versions, and the most efficient offers an EV range of almost 350 miles.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring and i5 Touring arrive to take on equally formidable rivals including the Audi A6 Avant and Mercedes-Benz E-Class estate.

The new BMW i5 Touring will also provide an interesting premium car alternative to the new Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo – there are not yet all-electric rivals from Audi or Mercedes-Benz.

New 2024 BMW 5 Series Touring and i5 Touring price and release date

The new BMW 5 Series Touring arrives in plug-in hybrid guise in the summer. Prices will be released nearer to its launch date.

The new BMW i5 Touring is open for ordering now, with deliveries due in May 2024. New BMW i5 eDrive40 prices start from £69,040 and the new BMW i5 M60 costs from £99,090.

A big boot is a key feature of a good estate car and the new BMW 5 Series Touring offers more space than ever before.

New 2024 BMW 5 Series Touring and i5 Touring: exterior and interior

The new BMW 5 Series Touring and i5 Touring have the same upscale look, and have grown notably over the previous BMW 5 Series Touring. They now measure almost 5.1 metres long, and are wider and taller too.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring has the longest wheelbase in its class, at almost three metres. More space between the front and rear wheels means even more space inside for people and luggage.

At the front, the new BMW 5 Series Touring has distinctive LED headlights that are a modern interpretation of the classic BMW twin headlight look. Between them sits an extra-large grille, that is available with BMW Iconic Glow illumination on top-spec versions.

Clean, simple lines give the new BMW 5 Series Touring a futuristic look, aided by flush-fit door handles and an elongated profile. The rear wheel arches are particularly powerful-looking for a practical estate car.

At the rear, the new BMW 5 Series Touring and i5 Touring have L-shaped LED tail lamps. They have a smart-looking chrome bar set within, which extends from the flat rear tailgate into the side sections.

Inside, the new BMW 5 Series Touring is said to over more space “and noticeably more leg, shoulder and elbow room, especially in the rear”. Impressively, the electric new BMW i5 Touring has exactly the same interior space as the petrol-engined new BMW 5 Series Touring plug-in hybrid.

Boot space is improved in the new BMW 5 Series Touring. With the seats up, there’s 570 litres of space, expanding to 1700 litres with them folded. An electric bootlid is standard and the 40:20:40 split rear seat can be folded remotely from buttons in the boot.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring has a stowage compartment under the boot floor that’s big enough to take the parcel shelf, along with the partition net and EV charging cables. BMW says the load sill is also lower than before, with a wide and well-shaped boot opening.

Up front, the new BMW 5 Series Touring features the latest BMW Curved Display instrument panel. This comprises a 12.3-inch driver display and a 14.9-inch centre control display with touchscreen tech.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring is packed with tech. The BMW iDrive system runs the latest BMW Operating System 8.5, with a simpler-to-use home screen and ‘quickselect’ shortcuts. BMW Maps sat nav now incudes cloud-based navigation. Naturally, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring has two 5G mobile phone antennas – and can have four as an option. This makes it digitally future-proofed, with onboard tech even stretching to AirConsole in-car gaming. The optional Connected Package Professional offers YouTube video too.

New BMW 5 Series Touring and i5 Touring: engines and gearboxes

The new BMW 5 Series Touring lines up alongside the all-electric new BMW i5 Touring, making it the only car in its class to currently offer a choice of both powertrains.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring will only be available as a new BMW 530e plug-in hybrid. This arrives in the summer. It will have a 299PS total power output for 0-62mph performance in 6.4 seconds, and a powerful battery will give an electric range of up to 60 miles before the petrol engine kicks in.

The new BMW i5 Touring is available in two versions, a mainstream option and a high-performance BMW M Performance model. Both share the same 81.2kWh electric battery, with speedy DC rapid-charge potential of up to 205kW.

The new BMW i5 eDrive40 has a provisional electric range of up to 348 miles. With a 340PS electric motor driving the rear wheels, it offers 0-62mph performance in just 6.1 seconds.

The new BMW i5 M60 has a staggering 601PS from its dual electric motors, which mean it offers xDrive all-wheel drive traction. This helps it accelerate from 0-62mph in just 3.9 seconds. It is predicted to have an electric range of up to 314 miles.

Both the new BMW 5 Series Touring and i5 Touring have rear axle air suspension, which includes automatic self-levelling. This will give a level ride even when fully laden.

The new BMW i5 M60 Touring also has a high-tech M Sport suspension system including electronic dampers – and a top-spec system with active anti-roll is available as an option.
