Used Volkswagen ID.5 for sale: everything you need to know

The Volkswagen ID.5 is an all-electric mid-size SUV, that sits above other recent additions to the range, the ID.3 and the ID.4. It’s not a million miles away from the latter but does pack more space, so makes a good option for larger families.

It’s up against some stiff competition too, with the likes of the Audi Q4 e-tron, the Kia EV6 and the Tesla Model Y all vying for your attention in the used EV marketplace.

The Volkswagen ID.5 is certainly a good-looking machine, with a stylish exterior complimented by a cockpit that’s effective, though has suffered moans about its infotainment system.

You should get upwards of 300 miles of range on a good day, which makes the Volkswagen ID.5 suitable for long hauls. It’s not quite as potent in feel as some other rivals, like the Volvo C40 Recharge or the Ford Mustang Mach-E, but it offers a decent drive and is very comfortable.

If you’re looking for an affordable used buy, there’s a huge amount of choice. Take a look at a Volkswagen ID.5 for sale on heycar to discover just what’s on offer.

Should you buy a Volkswagen ID.5?

The Volkswagen ID.5 is a solid mid-size SUV that is an excellent entry point into the world of EVs, especially if you’ve got a family to move around. It looks the part and is built to a decent standard.

However, it’s quite as exciting to look at as something like the Kia EV6, which arguably performs more interestingly too. The Volkswagen ID.5 is more or a sober and sensible alternative, but if you want to play it safe with your next EV that makes perfect sense.

It certainly ticks all of the boxes for an all-electric car, with decent range and lots of comfort on the inside. The infotainment system has attracted its fair share of criticism since its arrival, but there’s nothing inside that’s bad enough to put you off.

A Volkswagen ID.5 not for you? We've got 1000s of used cars for sale to suit all budgets and needs.

What’s the best used Volkswagen ID.5 model to buy?

We think the Volkswagen ID.5 Pro Performance strikes a good balance of performance and affordability, although the entry-level ID.5 Pro is expected to be a more popular choice. Unlike the Volkswagen ID.4, the ID.5 is offered solely with a 77kWh battery, so that's one less decision to make. For Tesla-like performance, you'll need the top-spec Volkswagen ID.5 GTX Max.

Used Volkswagen ID.5 fuel economy and performance

The Volkswagen ID.5 is an all-electric mid-size SUV, so it’s quite big and bulky. The good news is that it also comes with a decent 77kWh battery, which is the same unit that’s used across the model variants below driving either a 150kW or 220kW motor (the latter being all-wheel-drive).

Top speed is between 99mph and 112mph depending on the model. The ID.5 is also capable of charging up to 135kW (DC), which could add up to 62 miles in 7 minutes minutes or so depending on the charger.

                • The Volkswagen ID.5 Pro is the entry-level offering, which features a single motor that delivers 174PS. Performance-wise, it’ll deliver 0-62mph acceleration of 10.4 seconds. Range at the optimistic end of the spectrum is up to 313 miles.
                • The Volkswagen ID.5 Pro Performance is a more muscular proposition, with 204PS and 0-62mph acceleration in 8.4 seconds. Expect similar range, although as with any EV, this is largely dependent on temperatures, the way you drive and other factors.
                • The Volkswagen ID.5 GTX is the AWD range topper and packs in more performance with a combined 299PS allowing it to reach 62mph in 6.3 seconds. The GTX should offer around 296 miles of range and has the benefit of a heat pump, which helps with heating the cockpit in advance of your journey.

What used Volkswagen ID.5 trim levels are available?

The Volkswagen ID. 5 is currently available in Style and GTX trim levels, with a decent level of features and functions on offer even in the base-level edition, which is a few thousand cheaper when bought new.

                • The Volkswagen ID.5 Style is the base level option but standard equipment across the ID. 5 range includes a panoramic sunroof, which elevates the interior above the norm. There are also black, diamond-turned alloys, comfort seats in Art velours microfleece, three zone AC with a rear air conditioning control panel, the Discover Pro navigation system and a rear-view camera. You also get keyless entry and starting, matrix LED headlights with automatic headlight control, poor weather light and entry lighting.
                • The Volkswagen ID.5 GTX adds 20-inch alloy wheels, augmented reality head-up display, area view and rear-view camera, electrically-operated tailgate opening and closing function, which can also be operated via foot movement under the rear tailgate. There’s also keyless entry and starting, a memory feature for Park Assist Plus, along with front and rear parking sensors, adaptive chassis control DCC including Driving profile selection as well as a heat pump.

Used Volkswagen ID.5 dimensions and boot size

                The Volkswagen ID.5’s dimensions are:

                • Length: 4599mm
                • Width: 2108mm
                • Height: 1615mm
                • Ground clearance: 160mm

The Volkswagen ID.5’s boot size is:

                • 549-litres

                Used Volkswagen ID.5 road tax

Currently, the Volkswagen ID.5 like other all-electric vehicles, is exempt for having to pay road tax. However, that could change in the near future, which is worth bearing in mind for possible future cost on top of the used purchase price.

How much is it to insure a Volkswagen ID.5?

Insurance groups for the Volkswagen ID.5 provisionally range from 29 for the ID.5 Tech Pro through to 40 the ID.5 GTX Max. It’s worth noting that much is currently being made about the rising cost of insurance, not least of which for EVs, which are historically more expensive to repair. This is despite having less moving parts than conventional ICE vehicles in most cases.
