The Ora Funky Cat undoubtedly has one of the most unusual names of any car on sale - which may be why the company behind the car, GWM, renamed it the Ora 03 in late 2023. As it’s exactly the same car we’re covering both models here.
You won’t have failed to notice them on the road either. This Chinese electric car has hints of the Volkswagen Beetle and Fiat 500, and a dose of its own style mixed in. It’s also quite a likeable EV, and represents good value as a new buy - something that carries over to used models too.
While the Funky Cat looks supermini-sized it’s actually more like a small family car, so competes with models like the MG4, Renault Megane E-Tech, Volkswagen ID.3, and Cupra Born, so there are plenty of alternatives if you can’t get on with the Ora’s styling.
Assuming you can get over the idea of telling people that you drive a Funky Cat (something the new Ora 03 name fixes, of course), and the car’s cutesy styling works for you, then the Ora’s value, charm, and decent range for the price are all reasons you might choose to buy one.
Several rivals are better to drive, and if the Ora has one real weakness it’s that the 228-litre boot is pretty unimpressive for a car that’s the same size as the Renault Megane E-Tech (with its 440-litre boot) or the MG4 (363 litres). Thankfully, passenger space is pretty good, and the car’s light, colourful cabin make it a pleasant place in which to travel.
The interior’s pretty good in general actually, with plush materials and a tasteful design, while there’s plenty of kit. Heated seats are the only real omission, which are only offered in 63kWh Pro+ versions of the Ora 03.
Another area that slightly lets down the Ora is the way it drives. It’s brisk thanks to a 171PS electric motor, but has a tendency to spin its wheels, the steering is a little slow and very light, and the ride could be softer. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s worth noting that several rivals both ride and handle better.
One of those is the Renault Megane E-Tech, while the Cupra Born and Volkswagen ID.3 drive well too, and the MG4 is among the most fun cars in this class without being uncomfortable on rougher roads. None quite stands out for its style as much as the Ora (though the Renault, Cupra and VW certainly look more mature and classy), and the Ora still looks good value alongside them too - only the MG4 really matches it here.
A GWM Ora Funky Cat not for you? We've got 1000s of used cars for sale to suit all budgets and needs.
You get a choice of batteries but not a choice of power outputs in the Funky Cat and 03, and the larger battery arrived more recently, so if you’re shopping used you may only find 48kWh models for sale for a little while. The claimed 193-mile range should do the job for most likely buyers, at any rate.
Most of those early cars will be First Edition models too, which isn’t a bad thing as like many cars badged ‘First Edition’ or some variant thereof, it was pretty well equipped. So really, unless you’re buying a nearly-new model, your choice pretty much comes down to colour.
The Funky Cat’s (and Ora 03’s) trim levels are pretty straightforward. First Edition and Pure+ variants are basically the same, while the Pro+ adds a larger battery and a handful of extra features.

The GWM Ora Funky Cat’s boot size is:
Road tax is currently completely free for the Ora Funky Cat and Ora 03, just as it is on all electric vehicles.
Ora Funky Cat First Edition models fell into insurance group 30, while the current range of Ora 03 models sees the Pure+ in group 27, and the Pro+ with the bigger battery in group 30. That means it starts in the same insurance group as the MG4, and tops out slightly above the Long Range Trophy version of the MG4, which is in group 29. In other words, insurance costs should be about what you’d expect for an electric car in this class.
